Champion Hensley (c1805) and Susan Edmondson of SC and Jefferson and Blount Co, AL

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Champion Hensley as far as I know.

Champion Hensley was born ca 1804/05 (per 1850 census) or ca 1809/10 (per 1860 census) in South Carolina (per 1850 and 1860 census). I don't know what District of South Carolina he was born in.

I don't know who Champ's parents were. Since he was born in South Carolina, the list of suspects is very small. As of the 1810 census there were only Hensleys in Fairfield, Greenville and Laurens Districts. Of these, only Enoch Hensley (1765/70) of Laurens Dist, SC had any apparent sons that matched Champ's age. This does not mean that Enoch is his father, but he should be considered a prime suspect.

For the 1810 census, Champ would have been either about 5 years old, or around 1 or under. The only Hensley in South Carolina with any sons that age ("under 10", born ca 1800/10) was Enoch Hensley (1765/70) of Laurens Dist, SC.

For the 1820 census, Champ would have been either about 15 years old, or around 10 or 11 years old. He should be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1804/10). In Greenville Dist, SC was widow Judith Hensley (c1775/94) with one son age 10-15.  Enoch Hensley had moved to Jackson Co, TN by 1820, and he had 2 apparent sons age 10-15, so if he is Champ's father, then he was there with him in Tennessee.

For the 1830 census, Champ Hensley would have been about 25 years old, or possibly 20 or 21. In any case he should be enumerated in the age 20-29 category (born ca 1800/10). (Enoch Hensley, in Warren Co, TN in 1830 had no son that age with him).

For the 1840 census, Champ Hensley would have been in his 30's, so should be enumerated in the 30-39 age group (born ca 1800/10). I found a listing for a "C. P. Henslee" in Cherokee Co, AL in 1840. I once that this was Champion, but other records show that record to be for Charles Phillips Henslee (c1819).

Champion Hensley married Susan Edmondson on 4 Jul 1844 in Jefferson Co, AL. Susan was born ca 1823/24 in South Carolina. I don't know who her parents are. It may not be a coincidence that the only other Hensley found in that county was Terry H. Hensley (c1797) who married there in 1826 but was in Greenville Dist, SC later on.

They moved from Jefferson to neighboring Blount County, Alabama before 1850 for they were in that county on the 1850 census. They had two Trammels living with them, relationship unknown.

I don't have them in 1870 yet.

Champion Hensley died before 1880, for Susan was listed as widowed on that census, still in Blount County, Alabama. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Champ and Susan had two apparent children per the 1860 census. I have them both with families by 1880. See the Register Report below for more information.
