Elizabeth Hensley (c1806) of VA, TN and Washington Co, AR

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Elizabeth Hensley as far as I know.

Elizabeth Hensley was born ca 1805/06 in Virginia. I have no idea what county. I also don't know if Elizabeth was born a Hensley, and became a single mother, or if she married a Hensley who died before 1850 leaving her a widow. I have not found compelling evidence either way so far. For the time being, I'll assume she was a widow.

Assuming that Elizabeth was a widow, then she married a Mr. Hensley sometime before ca 1827, probably in Virginia (where first known child was born).

I have no idea where to look on the 1830 census for this family, but they were either in VA or TN, based on the birth places of their children. Her child James Hensley was born ca 1826 in VA, and her next child Andrew, was born ca 1832 in Tennessee, so that shows they left VA for TN between 1826 and 1830.

There were many Hensley households on the 1830 census in TN and VA, many already accounted for. However, one of the remaining ones could be her. I checked the 1830 census in each of those states for a family that met several criteria. First, they had to have an apparent wife in the age 20-29 category (born ca 1800/10) which would match Elizabeth. They also had to have a son "under 5", (born ca 1825/30) to match son James. They also had to be otherwise unclaimed. This narrows down the search a little, but not enough to draw any conclusions.

In 1830, in Virginia, only two Hensley households met the general criteria: John Hensley (c1800/10) of Rockingham Co, VA; Mary Hensley (c1770/80) of Washington Co, VA. Of these, John Hensley is a good suspect, for he was no longer in Rockingham Co, VA by 1840, which fits with Elizabeth's family.

In 1830 Tennessee, these families met the criteria, so could be Elizabeth's: Bennett Hansley (c1800/10) of Hawkins Co, TN; John Hensley (c1790/1800) of Jackson Co, TN; Benjamin Hensley (c1800/10) of Monroe Co, TN; Benjamin Hensley (c1790/1800) of Wayne Co, TN. I don't know if any of these are better suspects than others.

In 1840, I assume that Elizabeth and her family would be in TN (son Andrew born there ca 1832), or already in Arkansas. I checked the 1840 census entries for Arkansas, and found no family that matched Elizabeth's (no one family with a wife her age, and two sons matching hers). However, in Tennessee I found no good matches, except for a Thomas Hensley (c1800/10) who is listed in Laura Schreibman' s book as being in Campbell Co, TN, but I couldn't find him there, nor in Carter Co, TN where the census index shows him. However, he was somewhere, and his household is a good match.

Wherever Elizabeth was in 1830 and 1840, by 1850 she was in Washington County, Arkansas. Hers was the only Hensley family there. Washington County bordered Indian Territory (Oklahoma), and was just one county away from Missouri.

Elizabeth's husband, Mr. Hensley was dead before 1850. I don't know if he died in Tennessee or in Arkansas. Elizabeth and two sons were listed in Cane Hill Township of Washington County, Arkansas in 1850. They were between the Edmond Tilley family and the Moses Edmiston family. This record was taken from a transcribed version of this census on Mike Jackson's web pages. I have the census microfilm on CD from Family Tree Maker but it is too dim to read (like most of their products, it is inferior, Heritage Quest has far superior Census Microfilm records on CD).

I didn't find any thing on this family in 1860. I don't know where they were then, or afterwards.

Children

Elizabeth Hensley had at least two children per the 1850 census. Both were with her then, and I have no additional data on them.
