> George W. Hensley
The author (Marty Grant) is not related to George W. Hensley
as far as can be determined. He did live in the same county (Knox Co,
TN) as my ancestor Samuel Hensley
(1801-1852).
George W. Hensley was born ca 1781/82 per
his age of 68 on the 1850
census. This agrees with his age range on the 1830 and 1840 census. He was born in Virginia (also per 1850 census.) I don't know what county he was born in,
though it may be somewhere in south-western Virginia.
I don't know who George W. Hensley's parents are.
I don't have any strong suspects. He might be closely allied with my
Larkin Hensley (c1761)
family, as they were in Knox Co, TN at the same time. However, that does not
automatically mean they are closely connected, as Knoxville was certainly a
major hub of activity and migration at that time (ca 1809) attracting settlers
from all over.
George would have been about 8 years old by the
time of the 1790 census, so if listed somewhere, he would surely be with his
parents in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). However, the 1790 census
is lost for all of Virginia and Tennessee.
George would have been about 18 years old for the
1800 census, so should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1774/84).
However, the 1800 census is also lost for Virginia and Tennessee.
Sometime prior to ca 1809, George W. Hensley moved
to Knox County, Tennessee, though I don't know if he went by himself or with his
parents or other relatives. The only other known Hensleys in Knox County at the
time included the widow and children of
Larkin Hensley (c1761)
formerly of Washington / Scott Co., VA, and the family of
Ichabod Hensley (1780/90) who
is either a son or nephew of Larkin. There may have been other Hensleys there at
the time, but I've not identified them yet.
On 14 Jan 1809, "George Hensley" married Anne
White in Knox County, Tennessee. She was born ca 1790/1800 (assuming she was
the older female living with George for the 1830 census, aged 30-39.) I don't
know where Anne was born, nor who her parents were, but I suspect she has a
brother named Isaac White (c1798 TN), though that isn't completely proven. Isaac
did live near George and some of the Hensleys children resided with him in 1850,
and George and Anne did name one of their sons Isaac. All circumstantial
evidence, but compelling.
George Hensley was probably still in Knox County
by the time of the 1810 census, but unfortunately, the 1810 census is lost for
Tennessee.
George Hensley was probably still in Knox County
at the time of the 1820 census also, but unfortunately, the 1820 census is lost
for all of eastern Tennessee including Knox County.
By 1830, George Hensley had moved westward a few
counties to Jackson County, Tennessee, and was listed there on the census that
year. Unfortunately, the census taker alphabetized the list, so I can't tell who
George's neighbors were.

There were other Hensleys in Jackson before
George arrived there. Enoch Hensley
(c1775 VA) was one, and an unidentified John Hensley (1790/94) was the
other. I don't think George is closely related to Enoch, but I could be wrong.
By ca 1833, George W. Hensley had moved his family west to
Pike County, Arkansas.
George W. Hensley was listed in Pike County on the
1836 and 1838 tax lists.
It would seem that Anne White Hensley died
sometime between ca 1837 and 1840, for no one her age was with the family on the
1840 census. George was listed on 1840 census in Pike County,
Arkansas next door to possible brother-in-law Isaac White (c1798). George was
the only Hensley listed in Pike County in 1840.

George W. Hensley married Sarah ---
sometime between 1840 and ca 1845 in Pike Co, AR. Sarah was born ca 1819/20 in
Tennessee. I don't know her maiden name. It is also possible that Sarah is
not George's 2nd wife, but a daughter instead. The only record I have for her is
the 1850 census record, which does not state relationships. It looks like she is
a wife, since there are two young children in the household also, but I could be
wrong about the relationship. Pending other evidence, I'll continue to list her
as a 2nd wife.
George W. Hensley was listed on the 1841 tax list
for Pike County.
George Hensley and family were listed on the 1850
census in Pike County in Thompsons District. They were just a few houses from Isaac
White (c1798), a probable brother to George's first wife Ann White. Isaac White
had a couple of Hensleys living with him in 1850 also (see John
Hensley's entry below).

I was unable to locate George W. Hensley
anywhere on the 1860 census.
The only Hensley left in Pike County in 1860 was
W. H. Hensley age 14 living with a Kenedy family in Thompsons Township. This is
probably William Hensley who was with George in 1850. I couldn't find any of the
other children listed anywhere on the 1860 census.
Isaac White and family was still in Pike Co., AR
in 1860.
Johnnie Curtis told me that George moved to Laurel
Co, KY and died there. If so both events must have happened in the 1850's, for
there were no Hensleys listed there on the 1860 census.
Children of George W. Hensley.
George W. Hensley and Anne had numerous children
per the 1830 and 1840 census, and it appears that George and his 2nd wife Sarah
had at least two children, per the 1850 census.

apparent son this age. He was apparently home with George for the 1830 census
(age 15-19, born ca 1810/15), but was gone by 1840, so probably married or dead
by then.
I don't know who this might have been. He would
probably have been born in Knox Co., TN.

George W. Hensley had an apparent daughter this
age. She was apparently home with George for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca
1820/25), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.
She would probably have been born in Knox or
Jackson Co., TN.

so probably married or dead by then.
She would probably have been born in Knox or

John Hensley
was born ca 1828/29 (per 1850 census) in
Tennessee, probably Jackson County. He was apparently home with his parents for
the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still apparently home in
1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).
He was not home in 1850, but listed just a couple
of households away with the Isaac White family (whom I believe was his Uncle).
It also looks like he might have been married by that time to Zerelda ---
(possibly a daughter of Isaac White?). Zerelda was born ca 1822/23 in Tennessee.
Since they were both with Isaac White's family, that may be an indication that
she was his daughter. On the other hand she might be John's sister instead.
