Benjamin S. Hensley (c1802) and Susanna --- of NC and Habersham Co, GA

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Benjamin S. Hensley as far as I know.

Benjamin S. Hensley was born ca 1801/02 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know what section of North Carolina he came from, though it seems likely he was from one of the western counties, but there are other possibilities as well.

I don't know who Benjamin's parents are, and I have no strong suspects. It would help if I knew which section of North Carolina he had come from. I know for a fact that many of the families who settled in Habersham County, Georgia did originate in various western North Carolina counties, so that makes it seem reasonable to try to connect Benjamin with the Yancey, McDowell or Madison County, North Carolina Hensleys. There were other possibilities as well, as in the Caswell County Hensleys (usually using the "Henslee" spelling), and a few Hensleys were found in other North Carolina counties.

For the 1810 census, Benjamin S. Hensley would have been about 8 years old, so he ought to be enumerated in either the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10). Assuming his parents were still in North Carolina that year (1810 census for Georgia is lost), there are many suspects with an apparent (and otherwise unidentified) son that age. Too many to list here, in fact. In Buncombe, there were nine Hensley households with at least one son that age (some are identified, some not). In Burke there were two Hensleys with sons that age, including Benjamin Hensley (c1776) who later settled in Union Co, GA (very close to Habersham). Caswell County seems to offer no good suspects in 1810.

For the 1820 census, Benjamin would have been about 18 years old, so should be enumerated in the age 16-25 category (born ca 1794/1804). Just as in 1810, there were a number of suspects in North Carolina in 1820. Of course his family could have been in Georgia then as well. The 1820 census for Georgia is lost for several counties, but of those remaining, only Thomas Hinesley (1761) in Walton County, Georgia had a son that age, and he is an unlikely suspect, since "Hinesley" isn't really the same name as "Hensley". (See "Hensley Spellings" for more on that subject). However, the list of suspects in North Carolina had narrowed somewhat by 1820. In Buncombe County only Henry Hensley (bef 1755) had apparent sons that age. (However, Henry did have a son named Benjamin, older than the one under study here). In Burke County, Benjamin Hensley (c1776) had two sons age 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), which is close, though not a perfect match.

By 1830, Benjamin S. Hensley would have been about 28 years old, so he should be either a head of household, or in someone else's household listed as age 20-29 (born ca 1800/10). I did not find him on the 1830 census as head of household. None of the Georgia Hensleys in 1830 had a male that age with them except Robert Hinesley (1770/80) of Jones Co, GA (but note the different surname). Jones County was not particularly close to Habersham County. There was a Benjamin Hinsley (1800/10) in 1830 Wake Co, NC. He had a large family with him, so I doubt it is this same Benjamin, but worth noting.

Benjamin S. Hensley married Susanna --- sometime before 1832, perhaps in Habersham County, Georgia. Susanna was born ca 1809/10 in North Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know her maiden name.

Benjamin S. Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Habersham County, Georgia. No other Hensleys were in that county that year.

They were still in Habersham County for the 1850 census. The census taker listed most everyone by initials only, and instead of listing the surnames over and over, or using a ditto mark ("), he used the initial of the surname for subsequent family members, making it appear that everyone in this household had an "H" middle initial. There was another Hensley family in Habersham this year also, though not listed too close by. It was William C. Hensley (c1821) also born in North Carolina. I don't know if he and Benjamin are closely related or not.

I don't have them in 1860 yet. I don't know where they all went to. They did not seem to be in Habersham County, Georgia in 1860.

Children

Benjamin and Susanna had numerous children per the various census records. Some are still unidentified. In 1840 they had two sons born ca 1830/35 who were not home in 1850. The rest of their children were with them in 1850 but I have no additional data on them, especially since they were all listed only by their initial and not their name.
