> Benjamin Hensley
The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Benjamin Hensley
as far as can be determined. He did live in the same county (Monroe Co,
TN) as my ancestor Samuel Hensley
(1801-1852).
This family used both the "Hensley" and "Henslee"
spellings. (See "Hensley Spellings" for
more on this subject).
Special thanks to Joe Henslee for data shared on
this family especially on Hiram G. and William C. Hensley, grandsons of
Benjamin.
Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1775/76 per
his age of 74 on the 1850 census. This agrees fairly well with all his earlier
census records.
He was born in Virginia per 1850 census. I don't
know what county he was born in. If his parents are who I believe them to be,
then Benjamin was probably born in Henry Co., VA.
I have seen no direct proof of who Benjamin's
parents are, but I (and others) believe that he is a son of
Benjamin Henslee (bef 1755) of
old Burke (now McDowell) Co, NC. The evidence for this is all circumstantial,
but they were neighbors on Toms Creek and did seem to be associated with
one another, even using "Sr" and "Jr" to distinguish themselves (but those
designations do not prove they were father and son). This proximity is the only
evidence I have tying Benjamin (c1776) to the elder Benjamin (bef 1755), but it
seems a reasonable connection pending evidence to the contrary.
For the 1790 census, Benjamin would have been
about 14 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 16" age group (born
ca 1774/90). His probable father Benjamin was in Burke County that year and
three apparent sons in that age group. One of them could be young Benjamin.
Benjamin Hensley married Elizabeth ---
sometime between 1790 and 1800 in Burke County. She was born ca 1772/73 (per
1850 census) in Virginia (per 1850 census), though I don't know what county. I
don't know her maiden name.
On an undated tax or militia list (pre-1800 according to the
notation), Benjamin Hensley, Amos Hensley and Benjamin Hensley were listed in
Captain Dodson's company. This list would have to be in the late 1790's I think
for Amos and Benjamin (Jr) to be old enough to be listed.
Benjamin Hensley was listed on the 1800 census in
Burke County a few pages from his parents, but since this census was
alphabetical, I can't determine who their neighbors were.

In July 1801, Both Benjamin Hensley Sr and
Benjamin Jr were exempted from paying their 1800 poll tax (though I don't know
why). (Burke Co, NC Court Minutes, shared by Laura Schreibman)
They were still in Burke for the 1810 census. He
was not listed near his parents though. His neighbors were Thomas Sharpe and
John Hardin.

On 23 Nov 1812, Amos Henslee obtained a land grant
in Burke County on both forks of Tom's Creek adjoining Benjamin Henslee Sr and
Benjamin Henslee Jr and John Henslee.
On 24 Jul 1816, Benjamin Hensley was listed on a
Burke County Bastardy Bond with Anna Hagins. This either means he was the
bondsmen, or that he was the alleged father of the out of wedlock child. I don't
know which is the case. I haven't seen the original record.
Benjamin was still in Burke for the 1820 census.
He was listed between Andrew Strain and John Harris. Other neighbors are names
known to live in what later became McDowell County, so it seems certain that
Benjamin was in present McDowell County, North Carolina at this time.

In the 1820's, Benjamin moved his family west to
Monroe County, Tennessee, arriving before ca 1829. Several other Hensleys were
there already, or arriving about the same time. No relationships has been
established among them all, but several are related to one another.
Benjamin Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in
Monroe County, Tennessee. No other Hensleys were nearby, but several were listed
elsewhere in the county that year including Benjamin's son
Randal Hensley (1807) several pages
away. Other Hensleys there that year are not known to be related to Benjamin,
but could be: Phillip
Hensley (1800/10).
Samuel Hensley (1801) and his brother
Thomas Hensley (1806) (Samuel is my ancestor);
Benjamin Hensley (1800/10);
Trent Hensley (1770/80) and
Temple Hensley (1760/70). None
of these are known to be related to Benjamin (1776), though it is possible that
the younger Benjamin is his son.
Benjamin's neighbors in 1830 were Briant McDaniel
and Margaret Houston.

Either this Benjamin, or the younger one, was
listed on the 1836 tax list in Monroe County, Tennessee. I can't say for sure
which one it was.
Sometime before 1840, Benjamin moved his family
south to Union County, Georgia, settling in the section that later became Towns
County.
Benjamin was listed on the 1840 census in Union
County, Georgia. No other Hensleys were in the county. Neighbors were Wilson
Yarbrough and William Mulky.

They were still in Union County for the 1850
census. No other Hensleys were in the county. Their neighbors were John Roach
and Mary Duncan. Two young men were with them, too young to be their sons, so
probably grandsons instead.

Towns County was created in 1856 from the
section of Union county where the Hensleys lived.
It would seem that both Benjamin and Elizabeth
died in the 1850-1860 timeframe, as they were not found anywhere on the 1860
census. Their two known sons were living in Cherokee Co., GA and Cherokee Co.,
NC in 1860. No sign of Benjamin or Elizabeth in those counties so far.
Children of Benjamin Hensley and Elizabeth
---.
Benjamin and Elizabeth had several children per
the various census records. Only one is proven, and that is Ralzamore. His children and grandchildren filed Cherokee Indian claims, and on the application
listed Benjamin as their grandfather. This would also seem to prove that Randal
Hensley was a son of Benjamin, as Ralzamore named one of his sons "Randal", and
Randal named one of his "Ralzamore". That can't be a coincidence! The rest of
the children are unknown.

Unknown Son
(1794/1800). Benjamin Hensley had an
apparent son this age, probably born in Burke Co, NC (now McDowell Co, NC). He
was with Benjamin in 1800 (age "under 10"), and still home in 1810 (age 10-15,
born ca 1794/1800), but gone by 1820, so probably married or dead then.
I don't know who this might have been. No male
Hensley this age appeared on the 1820 census as head of household, at least not
in Burke.
Unknown Daughter
(1800/1804). Benjamin Hensley had an
apparent daughter this age, probably born in Burke Co, NC (now McDowell Co, NC).
She was with Benjamin in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and still home
in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804), but gone by 1830, so probably married or
dead then.
Unknown Son
(1802/04). Benjamin Hensley had an
apparent son this age, probably born in Burke Co, NC (now McDowell Co, NC). He
was with Benjamin in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and still home in
1820 (age 16-17, born ca 1802/04), but gone by 1830, so probably married or dead
then.
One possible match for this son is
Benjamin S. Hensley (c1802) of
Habersham Co, GA. He fits age-wise, and was born in North Carolina, and is
otherwise unclaimed. However, I have no solid evidence that he is even related,
much less a son of Benjamin. Habersham County borders Towns County, so that is a
strong clue.
Randal Hensley
was born 17 Jun 1807 (per Family Bible)
in Burke Co, NC (now McDowell Co, NC). I don't have direct proof that he is
Benjamin's child, but it seems to be without doubt. The main proof is that he
seems to be a brother to Ralzamore Hensley who is a proven son of Benjamin. The
main proof is that they both named sons after each other (Ralzamore had a
"Randal", and Randal had a "Ralzamore"), and that they were in the same area for
a time (Cherokee Co, NC).
Randal married Lemetine Johnson. See their
own page for additional information.
Ralzamore M.
Hensley was born ca 1813/14 (per 1850
census) in Burke Co, NC (now McDowell Co, NC) (per 1860 census). The proof that
he is Benjamin's child is that several of his children and grandchildren applied
for Cherokee Indian benefits and listed Benjamin as their ancestor.
Ralzy married Sarah Morgan. See their own
page for additional information.
Unknown
Daughter (1810/20). Benjamin Hensley had
an apparent daughter this age. She was home with him in 1820 (age "under 10",
born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown
Daughter (1810/20). Benjamin Hensley had
an apparent daughter this age. She was home with him in 1820 (age "under 10",
born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.
This could be Mary Elvira Hensley
(1821-1878), who married Charles Ward. though she is not an exact age-match.
Sharon Clement informed me that there are several Guion-Miller Applications for
the Wards and one of them gives Mary's parents as Benjamin and Elizabeth Hensley
who lived in Polk Co., TN in 1851. That fits for they did live in that area.
Union Co., GA bordered Polk Co., TN in 1850.
Hiram G. Hensley
was born Dec 1828 (per 1900 census) in
Tennessee per 1850 census, or in NC per 1860, 1870 and 1880 census.
It seems most likely that
he is a grand-son of Benjamin's and not a son, though I don't know who his
parents are. Perhaps he is a son of Benjamin's oldest unknown son. He did not
seem to be with Benjamin for the 1830 nor with him in 1840, but he was
with him in 1850 in Union Co, GA ("Hyram" age 21, born TN).
Hiram G. Hensley moved to Catoosa Co., GA and
was listed there on the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census.
William Conrad Hensley
was born 15 Oct 1832 (per civil war
records, shared by Joe Henslee.) He was born in Monroe Co., TN (same source).
It seems most likely that he is a grand-son of
Benjamin's and not a son, though I don't know who his parents are. Perhaps he is
a son of Benjamin's oldest unknown son. He did seem to be with Benjamin for the
1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and was with him in 1850 in Union Co, GA
("William" age 19, born TN).
William Hensley was in neighboring Rabun County,
Georgia in 1860.
