[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to William C. Hensley as far as I know. William C. Hensley was born ca 1820/21 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know what section of North Carolina he came from, though it seems likely he was from one of the western counties, but there are other possibilities as well. I don't know who William's parents are, and I have no strong suspects. It would help if I knew which section of North Carolina he had come from. I know for a fact that many of the families who settled in Habersham County, Georgia did originate in various western North Carolina counties, so that makes it seem reasonable to try to connect Benjamin with the Yancey, McDowell or Madison County, North Carolina Hensleys. There were other possibilities as well, as in the Caswell County Hensleys (usually using the "Henslee" spelling), and a few Hensleys were found in other North Carolina counties. It is possible that he is closely related to Benjamin S. Hensley (c1802) who was also in Habersham Co, GA in 1850. I don't believe they are father and son, but the could be brothers, or nephew-uncle. For the 1830 census, William C. Hensley would have been about 9 years old, so he ought to be enumerated in either the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). Assuming his parents were still in North Carolina that year, there are many suspects with an apparent (and otherwise unidentified) son that age. Too many to list here, in fact. There are several in Buncombe County, but none jump out at me as likely suspects. Of course it is also possible that his family was in Georgia by 1830. There were several in different parts of Georgia with a son William's age. For the 1840 census, William would have been about 19 years old, so should be enumerated in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1820/25). Just as in 1830, there were a number of suspects in North Carolina in 1840. Of course his family could have been in Georgia then as well. I can't list any strong suspects. William C. Hensley married Margaret J. Olivet sometime before ca 1844, either in North Carolina, or perhaps in Habersham County, Georgia. Margaret was born ca 1828/29 in Georgia (per 1850 census) or in North Carolina (per 1860 and 1880 census). I base her maiden name on the fact that her sister was living with them in 1880, listed as an "Olivet", and single. I don't know who her parents are. William and family were in Habersham County, Georgia. The census taker listed most everyone by initials only, and instead of listing the surnames over and over, or using a ditto mark ("), he used the initial of the surname for subsequent family members, making it appear that everyone in this household had an "H" middle initial. There was another Hensley family in Habersham this year also, though not listed too close by. It was Benjamin S. Hensley (c1802) also born in North Carolina. I don't know if he and William are closely related or not.

They were in Fannin County still for the 1880 census also. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. ChildrenWilliam and Margaret had numerous children per the various census records. I don't have much additional data on them so far. Researcher ListPersons researching this family (click here for data on how to get on or off of this list):
