> Samuel C. Hensley
The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Samuel C. Hensley
as far as can be proven. He did live in the same county (Washington Co.,
VA) as my ancestor Larkin
Hensley (c1761-1806).
Special Thanks to Ruthe Muench and Laura Schreibman for information shared on
this family.
Samuel C. Hensley was born ca 1781 or earlier. I
base this on him being listed on the 1802 tax list as being over 21. He
was probably born in Culpeper Co., VA where his father was living in 1781.
I don't know what the "C" middle initial stands for, but
"Covington" is a good guess since his mother was a Covington.
Samuel is a son of
Robert Hensley and
Eleanor Covington. This is proven by a deed wherein Samuel gives his
"father" Robert Hensley power of attorney.
The family moved from Culpeper Co., VA to Washington Co.,
VA in the 1780's while Samuel was still young.
Samuel Hensley Jr was listed as a member of the
Washington Co., VA Militia in 1799, in the 2nd Battalion, 105th Regiment.
He was listed as "Jr" to distinguish himself from
Samuel Hensley (1754),
a probable uncle of his.
The 1800 census is lost for Virginia and Kentucky.
Samuel C. Hensley married someone before ca 1800, probably
in Washington Co., VA. I've found no record of his wife's name.
On 7 Jul 1801 Robert Hensley and Elioner his wife
(Samuel's parents) deeded property to Samuel Hensley of Washington
Co., VA. This must be the 100 acres that Samuel had per the tax lists. (Washington Co., VA Deed Book 2 page 440)
Samuel Hensley "Jr" was listed on the
Washington Co., VA Land Tax
Lists beginning in 1802 with his 100 acres his parents deeded him in
1801. He didn't live in Washington County any longer and he was not listed
on the personal property tax lists during this period. He was listed
through 1809, but not in 1810 or afterwards.

At some point between 1801 and 1802 Samuel Hensley moved
to Montgomery Co., KY. Joseph
Hensley (1750/60) a probable uncle had moved there just a few years
earlier.
Samuell Hensley was listed on the 1802 tax list for
Montgomery Co., KY with 1 white male over 21, 3 horses and no land.
On 29 Sep 1802 the Trustees of the Town of Mt. Sterling
(Montgomery Co., KY) sold Lot # 50 (3 acres) on Main Street to Samuel
Hensley. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for this information.)
Samuel Hensely was listed on the 1803 tax list in
Montgomery with 1 white male over 21, and 4 horses.
Samuel Hansley was listed on the 1804 tax list in
Montgomery with 1 white male over 21, 2 horses and 1 town lot.
On 25 Jun 1804 Samuel Hensely of Montgomery
Co., KY gave power of attorney to "father" Robert Hensley of Washington
Co., VA. This deed proves that Samuel of Montgomery Co., KY is the same
Samuel who had been in Washington Co., VA earlier on. (Washington Co., VA Deed Book 3 page 359)
Samuel Hensley was listed on the 1805 tax list in
Montgomery with 1 white male over 21, 3 horses and 1 town lot.
Samuel was not listed on the 1806, 1807 or later
tax lists in Montgomery Co., KY.
Samuel pretty much disappears from the record after 1805.
He is listed on the land tax lists back in VA for 1806 through 1809, but he
may have been dead by then.
He does not appear on the 1810 census as far as can be
determined. There were no Samuels listed in Kentucky that year. His
children were still in Montgomery Co., KY later on, so it seems likely
that Samuel died there.
The 1820 census shows some Samuels in Kentucky, but none
are this same man. There was one in Gallatin County, one in Greenup and
one in Hart County. All were aged 45 and up or born before 1775. That is
too old to be this same man. Those three men are already identified
anyway.
Samuel C. Hensley was certainly dead by 25 May 1828 for on
that date his heirs sold his lot in Mt. Sterling, KY.
Children of Samuel C. Hensley.
Samuel had three proven children as named in a deed dated 25 May 1828
where they jointly sell his land in the town of Mt. Sterling, Montgomery
Co., KY. On that date Absolem Rice and Ellenor his wife, late Ellenor
Hensley; Samuel Hensley; & Frederick White and Louisa his wife, late
Louisa Hensley sold the town lot to Thomas Hoffman. The deed states they
are heirs of Samuel Hensley, decd.
Eleanor C. Hensley (1801) in Montgomery
Co., KY in 1830, in Callaway Co., MO in 1840 thru 1880.
Louisa Hensley (c1803) in Callaway Co., MO in
1840 through 1860.
Samuel Hensley (c1806) in Montgomery Co., KY
in1830; 1840 ? In Callaway Co., MO 1850, 1860.
