Henry "Harry" Hensley (bef 1753) and Barbara Angel of Rowan, Surry, Burke Buncombe and Yancey Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Henry Hensley as far as I know.

First of all, I need to say that there has been a great deal of misinformation passed around on Henry Hensley and his family. I'm hoping that with this web page, I'll be able to correct a lot of those errors, and dispel old inaccurate family myths regarding this family.

Henry Hensley was born before 1753, presumably in Virginia. I base his approximate birth year on several things. First of all, he was listed as age "45 and up" on the 1800 census, so that shows he was born before 1755. Second, he was listed on the 1774 Tax List (Surry Co, NC) as a tithable, so that probably shows he was at least 21 then. That would put his birth year at ca 1753 or before. Third, he was listed with his father Benjamin on the 1768 tax list (Rowan Co, NC) and that he probably means he was between 16 and 21 then, so born between ca 1747 and ca 1752.

Henry Hensley is a proven child of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hensley. The primary proof is the 1768 tax list for Rowan Co, NC where Benjamin Hensley is taxed, and also taxed for his "sons James and Harry". The record actually lists them as his sons, so that is good proof. He also fits based on circumstantial evidence, though we don't need any of that in this case.

I don't know where Henry was born precisely, but it was most likely in Virginia (some list North Carolina, but that is not likely). His father Benjamin did not come into North Carolina until the 1760's.  I don't know where Benjamin was in the 1750's, as there were several men named Benjamin Hensley turning up in VA records then. I don't know (yet) which one was Henry's father, so I can't narrow down what county he was probably born in.

Henry Hensley was often referred to as "Harry", which was a common nickname for "Henry".

Henry Hensley came with his parents and siblings from Virginia into Western North Carolina in the 1760's. They settled in Rowan Co, NC in an area that later became Surry County (and later became Stokes County).

Henry Hensley first appeared on the records in 1768 when he was listed on the Rowan Co, NC tax list. His father Benjamin was listed and taxed for 3 tithables, including himself and his "sons James and Harry". So this record shows that Henry was Benjamin's son, and James' brother.

In 1771, Surry County was formed from the section of Rowan where the Hensleys lived.

It was around this timeframe (ca 1771-1773) that Henry Hensley married Barbara Angel in Surry Co, NC. Barbara (or "Barbary") was born ca 1754/55 in North Carolina (based on the 1850 census record showing her as age 95, and born in North Carolina). Barbara is a proven child of Charles Angel and Sibella (Washington).

There is some bad information going around that Henry was married twice, second to "Mary Elizabeth Halen", however, this is totally wrong. Henry married Barbara Angel before 1773 and she was still living as of 1850, so if he couldn't have married "a second time", as Barbara outlived him. Others list this fictitious wife as his first wife and mother of his child "Henry Halen Hensley" who was born in 1781. This also does not work, as Henry married Barbara before 1773. These dates are contradictory. I don't know where this information about "Mary Elizabeth Halen" originated, but as far as I can tell, there is no truth to it. If Henry was married before Barbara Angel, then it was a brief marriage, and there were no known children.

There is a surviving 1771 and 1772 tax list for Surry Co, NC, but Henry was not listed on either one. That probably means that he was not yet 21 then.

On 17 Jul 1773, Charles Angel (Henry's father-in-law) made his Will in Surry Co, NC (recorded in Surry Co, NC Will Book 1 page 68). He mentioned his plantation on the south side of the Dan River and on the north side of the Dan River. He named his wife Sibbela, and several children including three daughters who were married to Hensleys: Jamima Hansly ... Frances Hansly ... Barbra Hansly ... (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for sharing this Will).

Though Charles Angel had three daughters who married Hensley men, his Will did not state who their husbands were. We know Barbara Angel was married to Henry Hensley from other sources, but we don't yet know who Jamima and Frances Angel married, though it is likely they were married to brothers of Henry Hensley.

Henry Hensley was listed on the 1774 tax list in Surry Co, NC.

Apparently all of these Hensleys moved to Henry Co, VA by 1778 (Henry Co, VA bordered Surry Co, NC in those days). Henry Hensley and several of his siblings were listed on the 1778 tax list (or militia list) in Henry Co, VA.

This was the Revolutionary War timeframe, and I believe Henry and his siblings and some cousins all served in the same Henry Co, VA Militia unit. I do not have the records, but Laura Schreibman and others have searched these records carefully and found several Hensleys, including Henry Hensley serving in Jonathan Hanby's Company, which was at the Battle of Guilford Court House (North Carolina).

Henry Hensley was listed on the 1783 tax list in Henry Co, VA.

Henry Hensley was listed on the 1784 tax list in Henry Co, VA.

Henry Hensley and many (or all) of his siblings moved from Henry Co, VA to Western North Carolina in the mid 1780's. They settled in what is now both Yancey and Madison Co, NC, but was still part of Burke County at that time.

The 1787 State Census for Burke County, NC shows four Hensley households listed, however, the edge of the pages were damaged, so none of the given names survived, so I can't really tell which was which. However, one of these was certainly Henry Hensley. The other three were probably Hickman, James and Benjamin Hensley. I'm including the listing that I think is Henry's, but keep in mind that it could be one of the other Hensleys instead.

Henry Hensley was listed on the 1790 census in Burke County, NC in the 12th Company. He was listed between Elijah Bunis and John Renfren (probably "Rentfrow"). Several relatives were very close by as well, including John Hensley (2 houses away), and a little further away, but in the same company was James Hensley and Hickman Hensley (Henry's brothers).

In 1791, Buncombe County was created from the section of Burke County where Henry Hensley and family resided.

In April 1792, Henry Hensley, Hickman Hensley and others were ordered to be on a jury to lay off a road from Waggon Ford of Rime Creek to Turkey Cove to Robert Hintons on Lindseys Creek of Cove River. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In Jul 1792, Henry Hensley, James Hensley and others were ordered to be on a jury to lay off a road from Ivy River to Caney River. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In April 1793, Henry Hensley, John Hensley and others were ordered to appear as Jurors for the next court, the July 1793 term. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In July 1793, "Harry Hensely" was listed on a Grand Jury. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

In Court in July 1793, it was ordered that Colbert Hensley, John Hensley, Harry Hensley and others were to be a jury to view and lay off a road from Hintons Mill the nearest and best way to Austin Choates on Ivy River. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Journal).

Henry Hensley was listed on the 1800 census in Buncombe Co, NC. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who Henry's neighbors were.  Henry had 1 slave according to the 1800 census (he had none back in 1790).

Henry Hensley was listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe Co, NC. He was just two houses from his probable son Benjamin Hensley (c1793). Henry was listed between William Bird and Stephen Edwards. As in both 1800 and 1810, he had 1 slave listed. This census provided more details on the slaves, and shows one female slave in the "26" column, which I believe means she was between age 15 and 25, or born ca 1794/1805. (In 1822 Henry sold a Negro girl named "Dice" to William Hensley, so this is probably her.).

Henry Hensley died sometime between 1820 and 1830 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC.

Barbara Angel Hensley lived out her remaining years with her son William A. Hensley. She was apparently with him in the 1830 and 1840 census (or at least he had someone her age with him then), and she was still with him for the 1850 census in Washington Co, TN. She was listed as 95 years old, and born in North Carolina.

Barbara Angel Hensley died sometime between 1850 and 1860 in Washington Co, TN.

Children

Henry and Barbara had a very large family according to the census records. I have a list of children for them, that I believe to be fairly accurate, but I can't prove them all. In fact, there are only three children that I'm absolutely positive of: William A. Hensley (1798-1889), since Barbara was with him in 1830, 1840 and 1850. Also with him those same years (and 1860) was an apparent sister Zania Hensley (c1793). Therefore, in my mind, only Zania and William A. are proven. One more proven child is Barbara Hensley who married Holland Higgins. They are proven by a letter written in 1892 by their grandson John S. Higgins.

Unknown Son (1774/1790). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him in 1790 (5 sons "under 16", or born ca 1774/90). One of these five was gone by 1800, so probably had married or died by then.

I suspect that this is Washington Hensley (1774/84). He first appeared on the 1800 census, and in 1810 was just a few houses from Henry Hensley. He moved to Wayne Co, TN by 1820.

I have no direct proof that Washington Hensley is a son of Henry and Barbara, but the 1892 letter written by John S. Higgins to his Cousin William Holland Higgins states that their grandmother (Barbara Hensley Holland) had a brother named "Washington".  This letter is the only evidence (other than circumstantial evidence) showing that Washington was a child of Henry and Barbara.

See his own page for additional information.

Unknown Daughter (before 1790). In 1790, Henry Hensley had 5 females listed with him, 1 of which was his wife Barbara, the other 4 were presumably daughters. Two of those girls were no longer with him in 1800. This was one of those two who were gone. Presumably, she either married or died in the 1790/1800 timeframe,

I have no clue who this daughter might have been.

Unknown Son (1774/84). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and with him in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84), but he was gone by 1810, so married or dead by then.

I believe this might actually be James Hensley (c1780). James married Nancy --- (perhaps "Anderson") in the 1800-1810 timeframe, and he was just a few houses from Henry Hensley on the 1810 census.

I have no direct evidence that James is Henry's son, and the circumstantial evidence is sparse as well, but it is a good fit. James really doesn't fit anywhere else. However, some  good solid evidence connecting them would be helpful.

Unknown Son (1774/84). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and with him in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84), but he was gone by 1810, so married or dead by then.

I believe this is probably Henry Hensley (c1781). Henry (Jr) married Mary Howard ca 1803.

I have no direct evidence that Henry Jr is Henry's son, and the circumstantial evidence is sparse as well, but it is a good fit. Henry Jr really doesn't fit anywhere else. However, some  good solid evidence connecting them would be helpful. Since he and Lewis Hensley married sisters, that supports (but doesn't prove) that they may be brothers.

Unknown Daughter (1774/84). Henry Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1790 census (no ages given, so born before 1790) and with him in 1800 (age 16-25, born ca 1774/84), but she was gone by 1810, so married or dead by then.

I don't know who this might have been.

Unknown Son (1784/90). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and with him in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but he was gone by 1810, so married or dead by then.

I suspect that this was Lewis Hensley (c1784/90). Lewis married Nancy Howard in 1803.

I have no direct evidence that Lewis is Henry's son, and the circumstantial evidence is sparse as well, but it is a good fit. Lewis really doesn't fit anywhere else. However, some  good solid evidence connecting them would be helpful. Since he and Henry Hensley (Jr) married sisters, that supports (but doesn't prove) that they may be brothers.

Unknown Son (1784/90). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1790 census (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and with him in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90).

I'm not sure if this son was still home with Henry in 1810 or not. In 1810, Henry had 1 son with him age 16-25 (born ca 1784/94). This could be this son, or it could be one of those he had born ca 1790/1800. I can't narrow it down enough from the 1810 census enumerations to be sure.

This son (1784/90) was not with Henry by 1820, so married or dead by then for sure.

I have no strong suspects for who this child was.

Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Henry Hensley had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1790 census (no ages given, so born before 1790) and with him in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90). She was still home with Henry in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94), but she was gone by 1820, so married or dead by then.

I don't know who this might have been.

Unknown Son (1790/1800). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), but he was gone by 1810, so married or dead by then.

I believe this could be Benjamin Hensley (c1793). Benjamin married Louisa --- ca 1807. I have no direct proof that Benjamin was a son of Henry, but he fits, and he was near him on the 1820 census. He apparently named one of his sons "Henry", so that is good clue.

Unknown Son (1790/1800). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800), but he was gone by 1810, so married or dead by then.

I don't know who this was.

Unknown Son (1790/1800). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800). I don't know if he was still with Henry in 1810. Henry did have 1 son age 16-25 with him in 1810 (born ca 1784/94) which could be this son, if born ca 1790/94, or it could be an older son born ca 1784/90.

In 1820 there was a male born ca 1794/1804 with Henry, who could be this same person. The only way to reconcile all three census records (1800= ca 1790/1800; 1810= ca 1784/94; and 1820= ca 1794/1804) is for a person born ca 1794.

I don't know who this was.

Barbara Hensley was born ca 1790/91 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. I have her birth date as 27 Dec 1792, which I think is from her tombstone at the Higgins Chapel Cemetery in Unicoi Co, TN.

She was apparently with Henry Hensley for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and with him in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94).

Barbara (also known as "Barbary") Hensley married Holland Higgins ca 1810/1812 in Buncombe (now Yancey Co, NC).

I have not yet them on the 1820 census, though I think they had moved over into neighboring Washington Co, TN by that time.

Holland Higgins was killed by David Greer "a Turk" on 30 Nov 1824.

I have not yet looked for Barbara Higgins on the 1830 and 1840 census, but I suspect she was listed on the Washington Co, TN census for those years.

She was living with her son Samuel Higgins in 1850, in Washington Co, TN. I don't have this listing typed up yet.

Barbara died in Washington (now Unicoi) Co, TN on 17 Jun 1882.

Much of what I have on this family is from a letter written by John Higgins (1835) to his 1st cousin William Holland Higgins. The letter was dated 18 Jan 1892, Flag Pond, TN. (Thanks to Kenneth C. Wilde and Laura Schreibman for sharing this with me).

Dear cousin and nephew, it is a great pleasure to me to answer yours of the 26 of Dec and Nov the 8.1891; you said you had written four letters to me. I have received only two, the two came this evening. I am ashamed that I did not answer you other one. I kept thinking I would, but did not. I am hard runned and no time to write much. I am writing in the night now and is very tired. Have been getting wood today, we are having a great amount of snow and cold weather.

Excuse me cousin Billie if you can, we are all in common health tonight, and hope you are well fat and saucy.

Well William Holland, I'am truly glad that you have undertook to get up our genealogy, wish you could be thoroughly sucessful, But I am not able to furnish you all the information you desire, as I would like to do, though I will assist you all I can.

Our grandfather's name was Holland Higgins. He was a mechanic blacksmithing, was one trade coppering another, and I suppose anything he wanted to do, For that was the characteristic of the Higgins.

He probably came from Virginia to the Greasy Cove in Washington Co., east Tenn near the town Erwin in Unicoi Co., now where our grandfather was from there. Great grandmother who was Peggy Ellis before she married died. Grandfather was then bound out to Joe Culberson, and was made to sit on the fence and watch for the Indians they were there then and hostile. Great grandfather sometime after moved to Yancy Co., then Buncombe Co., NC where he lived and died. Grandfather and grandmother was married in Buncombe Co., NC. Her name was Barbara Hensley, daughter of Barbara and Harry Hensley.

Grandmother's mother was an Angel, and her mother was a Washington, a cousin to Gen George Washington. Our grandmother's grandmother and George Washington was cousins. This is why the name is used so much among us. Grandmother had a brother named Washington, she had a son George Washington, you father had a son George, I have a son George Washington.

Grandfather like his father was a blacksmith, carpenter, stone mason, shoemaker, copper, mill rite, farmer, and the greatist hunter that was in this country. He had 2 children by another women before he and grandmother was married. Their names were Lucinda and Elizabeth. He and grandmother had ten children, five boys and five girls. Father whose name is Ellis was the oldest, uncle John, the next I do not know which next, but there was Sallie, Nancy, uncle James and Samuel, Barbara, George Washington and Margaret was the youngest, she was born a short time after grandfather's death.

I can not give many dates. Grandfather was killed by one David Greer, a Turk, Nov the 30,1824,was about forty five years old.

Grandmother departed this life Jun 17,1882 at the age of 93 years old father was born Feb 9,1812 and was living a little while ago and well. Uncle John was 13 months younger, he died the 15th of May 1891.Uncle Sam is stell living. Uncle Wash. was killed in time of the war by an Indian. Aunt Nancy, Sallie and Linda is dead, six dead six living.

Come and see us Billie. J.S.Higgins finish April 19,1892.

Zana Hensley was born ca 1792/93 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. She was apparently with Henry Hensley for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and with him in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94), and with him in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804).

She apparently never married. After her fathers death in the 1820's, Zana continued living with her widowed mother and with her brother William A. Hensley. Zana was apparently with William for the 1830 census (age 30-39, born ca 1790/1800), and with him still in 1840 (age 40-49, born ca 1790/1800). She was with him still for the 1850 census listed as age 57 (born ca 1792/93), and with him still in 1860 (age 67, born ca 1792/93).

I didn't find her in 1870, so I suspect she died ca 1860/70 in Washington Co, TN.

William A. Hensley was born ca 1797/98 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. He was apparently with Henry Hensley for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and with him in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), and with him in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804).

William A. Hensley was listed as head of household in 1830 Buncombe Co, NC with (apparently) his widowed mother and several siblings and other relatives residing with him. His mother continued residing with him, and was apparently with him in 1840 and she was definitely with him in 1850. This fact is what makes me positive that William is a son of Henry and Barbara, the fact that she lived with him for over 20 years after Henry died.

See his own page for additional information.

Unknown Son (1802/04). Henry Hensley had no apparent son this age with him in 1810. However, in 1820 he had 3 males age 16-25 living with him (born ca 1794/1804). One of the three was also enumerated in the age 16-17 column (born ca 1802/1804). (This column included any males age 16 and 17. These males would also be enumerated in the 16-25 age group).

I don't know who this is. Since he wasn't with Henry in 1810, it seems likely that he was not his son, but possibly a grandson, nephew or other boarder.

Unknown Son (1815/20). Henry Hensley had an apparent son this age with him for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). In 1830, William A. Hensley (1798) (Henry's son) had several "extra" people with him including his mother and sister. He also had an "extra" male age 10-14, (born ca 1815/20) who could be the same person from 1820.

I don't know who this was. He probably was not a son of Henry and Barbara, as Barbara would have been 60 years old in 1815. However, he could be a grandson, nephew or other boarder.
