William B. Hensley (c1821) and Elizabeth (Cooper) of Yancey Co, NC and Washington Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to William B. Hensley as far as I know. William B. Hensley was born ca 1820/21 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC). I've been told his middle name was "Bryson", but I've seen no primary evidence supporting that, but it is probably correct. This may suggest a relationship to the Bryson family, but perhaps it was just a name his parents liked. I don't know who William's parents might have been. There are several possibilities. Elizabeth Hensley (c1783) of Washington Co, TN is a prime suspect for his mother. (See below for why I consider her a possibility). William was presumably home with his parents for the 1830 census, and in the age 5-9 category (born ca 1820/25). This narrows the list of suspects down somewhat, but not enough to draw any conclusions. In 1830 there were several Hensley households in Buncombe Co, NC with at least one male in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). One of these could be William B. Hensley's family: Joab Hensley (c1796) (not likely); Abishai Hensley (c1789) (not likely); Lewis Hensley (c1784/90); Samuel Hensley (c1800); William A. Hensley (1798); Charles Hensley (c1796); Henry Hensley (c1781) (not likely); Samuel Hensley (c1804); Hickman Hensley (c1804) and James Hensley (c1795). That is a large list of suspects. I think that the search (in 1830) should also extend to neighboring Washington Co, TN, as William moved there later on, then came back to Yancey. He may have been in one of the families that left for Washington Co, TN in the 1820's, but came back later. If so, then there was only one Hensley households in Washington Co, TN in 1830 with a male child age 5-9, or born ca 1820/25: Benjamin Hensley (c1790). For some reason, I don't think he is the father of William B. Hensley though, but he should be considered. Yancey County was formed from Buncombe in 1833, including the area where the Hensley's lived. William B. Hensley may have still been at home in 1840, but he seems to have a child born ca 1838, so that makes it look like he was married before then, however I found no marriage record for him. I did not find William B. Hensley listed on the 1840 census. This suggests he was either missed by the census taker, or else he was residing with his parents, or in-laws at the time (if married). Wherever he was living, he should have been enumerated in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1820/25). In Yancey County, NC there were only three Hensley households with a male that age, including: Charles Hensley (c1796); William A. Hensley (1798); and Henry Hensley (c1781) (not likely). In neighboring Washington Co, TN, there were a few possibilities: Benjamin Hensley (c1790); Elizabeth Hensley (c1783); and William Hensley (c1797). William B. Hensley married Elizabeth Cooper, apparently before ca 1838, and presumably in Yancey County. I originally thought Elizabeth was a Metcalf (based on an 1842 Washington Co, TN marriage for "W. Hensley" and "E. Madcap"), but Lynn Hensley showed me proof that Elizabeth was probably a Cooper. This was recorded in one of their children's death certificates, and confirmed by other circumstantial evidence. More research is needed to be sure about her though. I'm not fairly certain that she was not Elizabeth Metcalf. William B. Hensley and Elizabeth and family were in Yancey Co, NC for the 1850 census, and none of their children were born in TN (per the 1850 census, anyway). They were listed next door to Morris McIntosh on one side, and Elias Hensley on the other (possible brother?). They were very close to several other Hensley's as well, including William M. Hensley (c1810), just two houses away, and William H. Hensley (c1813), just four houses away and Charles Hensley (c1796), just nine houses away.

Hensley and family moved to (or "back to") Washington Co, TN in the 1850's, and were listed there on the 1860 census in the 18th District. Other Hensleys were in the same district, but not listed close by.

William and Elizabeth moved back to Yancey Co, NC before 1870, and were listed on the 1870 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. I didn't find them in 1880 in Yancey Co, NC. I haven't followed up on this family beyond this point, but I've seen that they came back to Yancey Co, NC by 1870. ChildrenWilliam B. Hensley and Elizabeth (Cooper) had at least seven children, plus one more from an apparent previous marriage.
