William H. Hensley was born ca 1812/13 in Buncombe Co, NC (Now Yancey Co, NC). Since there were several William's in Yancey Co, NC at the same time, they all used their middle initials (thankfully) on most records, so they could be distinguished. I don't know what the "H" might be an initial for in this William's name. ("William Henry" or "William Harrison" were pretty common, but there are other possibilities).

I don't know who William H. Hensleys' parents were. There are several candidates who might be his parents, but not enough proof to make a determination. The 1880 census entry for William shows his father was born in NC, and his mother in KY. That should provide some clue as to who his parents were.

William H. Hensley would most likely be home with his parents for the 1820 and 1830 census. In 1820 he should be in the "under 10" category (born ca 1810/20), and in 1830 in the age 15-19 category (c1810/15). That helps narrow down the suspects a little bit, but not enough to come to any conclusions.

William H. Hensley married Sultana A. J. --- ca 1830/1832 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. I don't know what her maiden name might have been. Since she used two middle initials, perhaps the "J" was for her surname, but that may not be the case. Her age (born ca 1821/22) makes her kind of young to be the mother of some of William's older children, so it is quite possible that Sultana was a 2nd wife. If so, there is a huge gap between children (Sarah b ca 1841 and William b ca 1849) which might show that the first wife died ca or after 1841, and William married Sultana between then and 1849.

William H. Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey Co, NC. His next door neighbors were John Hampton and David Norton (or "Daniel" Norton). He was about 15 houses from Hickman Hensley.

William H. Hensley and family were still in Yancey for the 1850 census. They must have lived in the "William Hensley" community, for several of the other William Hensley's were listed close by! William M. Hensley (c1810) was 2 houses away and William B. Hensley (c1821) was 5 houses away. Good thing they used those middle initials! William H. Hensley's next door neighbors were William Ray and Solomon M. Ray.

William H. Hensley and family were listed on the 1860 Yancey Co, NC census as well. their son John B. Hensley, now married with children was next door. Son Lewis W. Hensley was two households away.

William and Sultana had at least thirteen children per the various census records. For the most part, I have very little additional data on the children, so they will not get their own sections, until I find some information on them. I do know that their son John B. Hensley was in Jackson Co, NC for the 1870 census and in Madison Co, NC in 1880. Some of John's kids were born in GA.
