William K. Hensley (c1827) and Elvira --- of Yancey Co, NC and Washington and Unicoi Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to William K. Hensley as far as I know. William K. Hensley was born ca 1826/27 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC). He was possibly born in that part of Yancey that became Madison County in 1851. He did live in that region in 1850. I don't know who William's parents were. I suspect that he could be a son of William A. Hensley and Lucinda of Yancey Co, NC and Washington Co, TN, but only because William K. was near them for the 1860 census. They did have an apparent child his age with them in 1840, but not in 1830. Since I have no direct evidence that William belongs to William A. Hensley's family, I've done some census analysis to see if there are any other possibilities. William would have presumably been with his parents for the 1830 census, in the "under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840, in the 10-14 age group (ca 1825/30). On the 1830 census, there were several Hensley households in Buncombe with a male under 5, or born ca 1825/30, however, most of these are already proven to be someone else, but for the sake of completeness, here are the possibilities (if it says "unlikely" afterwards, that means the "under 5" males are already identified as someone other than William, or the family had another proven son named "William"). Suspects from 1830 are: Joab Hensley (c1796) (unlikely), Abishai Hensley (c1789) (unlikely), Lewis Hensley (c1784/90), Bannister Hensley (c1811), Pleasant Hensley (c1800), Samuel Hensley (c1800), Berry Hensley (c1783) (unlikely), Charles Hensley (c1796) (unlikely), John Hensley (c1794/1800), Jesse Hensley (c1804), Hickman Hensley (c1804), Amos Hensley (c1803) (unlikely), James Hensley (c1795/1800). The above list shows many possibilities. The 1840 census doesn't really help narrow down the list any. In 1840 Yancey County, there were only a few Hensley households with a male in the 10-14 age group, (born ca 1825/30), including Silas A. Hensley (c1816), Amos Hensley (c1803), Charles Hensley (c1796) (unlikely), William A. Hensley (1798), Berry Hensley (c1783), James Hensley (c1795/1800), Berry R. Hensley (c1802) (unlikely), and Samuel Hensley (c1805). Since William K. Hensley later lived in Washington Co, TN (by 1860), it is possible he was there in 1830 and 1840, instead of in NC, but back to NC by 1850. That would increase the suspects for his parents somewhat. In 1830 Washington Co, TN, there were a few Hensley households with males under 5 (born ca 1825/30), including: William Hensley (c1797), Benjamin Hensley (c1790) (unlikely), John Hensley (c1808) (unlikely, he already has a son named William). In 1840 Washington Co, TN, there were only a few Hensley households with a male age 10-15 (born ca 1825/30): John Hensley (c1808) (unlikely, he already has a son named William), Benjamin Hensley (c1790) (unlikely), and Pleasant Hensley (c1800). Whether William K. Hensley was in Yancey Co, NC or Washington Co, TN previously, he was apparently in Yancey in the 1840's. William K. Hensley married Elvira --- ca 1846 or so in Yancey Co, NC. I don't know what her maiden name might be. William and Elvira and two children were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County. They were not listed close to any other Hensleys. Their next door neighbors were May (or Mag) Ponder and Elizabeth Guthrey. I'm not sure, but it seems like they were all in the part of Yancey that became Madison County in 1851.

They were listed there on the 1860 census. They were just five houses from William A. Hensley (1798), his probable father.

Elvira Hensley and several of her children were in Unicoi Co, TN in 1880 (formed from Washington in 1875). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. I have no data on this family beyond this point. I do know that daughter Julia A. Hensley married William H. Hensley in 1868 (he was son of John Hensley).
