William M. Hensley as far as I know. William M. Hensley was born ca 1809/10 in Buncombe Co, NC (Now Yancey Co, NC). Since there were several William's in Yancey Co, NC at the same time, they all used their middle initials (thankfully) on most records, so they could be distinguished. I don't know what the "M" might be an initial for in this William's name. I don't know who William M. Hensleys' parents were. There are several candidates who might be his parents, but not enough proof to make a determination. William M. Hensley would most likely be home with his parents for the 1810, and 1820 census. In 1810 he should be in the "under 10" category (born ca 1800/10), and in 1820 in the age 10-15 category (c1804/10). That helps narrow down the suspects a little bit, but not enough to come to any conclusions. However, a flaw in this logic is that since he was apparently born in "1810", he could also fit in different age category. For example, in 1810, he might not have been born yet when the census taker came around. In 1820, he might be in the 10-15 group (c1804/10), or in the under 10 group (c1810/20). That makes reliable census analysis a little more difficult. However, the "1810" date is based on his age in 1850 ("40"), which puts his birth at ca 1809/10, which means he could have been born in late 1809. Also consider his age in 1860 ("53") which puts his approximate birth year at ca 1806/07. In 1810 there were several Hensley households in Buncombe with at least one male under age 10 (born ca 1800/10). One of these might be William M. Hensley: James Hensley (c1780), John Hensley (c1765/74), Washington Hensley (1774/84), James Hensley (bef 1755), Benjamin Hensley (c1790), Berry Hensley (c1783), Henry Hensley (c1781), Colbert Hensley (c1760/65), and Lewis Hensley (c1784/90). That is a lot of choices! In 1820, there were only four Hensley households with at least one male age 10-15 (c1804/10), which might be William M. Hensley: James Hensley (c1780), John Hensley (c1794/1800), Benjamin Hensley (c1790), and Berry Hensley (c1783). That narrows down the list of suspects considerably, but still does not prove who William's parents were. William M. Hensley married Delilah McIntosh ca 1825/30 in Buncombe (now Yancey) Co, NC. The proof of her maiden name is the Will of her mother Rachel McIntosh dated 15 Sep 1846 in Yancey Co, NC, naming her children, including daughter "Della McIntosh now Della Hensley". (From Yancey Co, NC Will Book 1 page 344, 345 thanks to Sheryl Kendrick for sharing this with me) William Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in Buncombe County, or at least I think it is him. Unfortunately, the census taker only gave his initial and surname "W. Hensely". They were just a few houses from James A. Hensley (c1804). Their next door neighbors were Rachel McIntosh (an apparent widow), and Gray Briggs. Rachel McIntosh was Delilah's mother. William M. Hensley was listed on the 1840 Yancey Co, NC census. They were not near any other Hensleys. Their next door neighbors were William Stanley and George Miller. There was no one in William's household who was Delilah's age, but there was a female in the age 15-19 category (c1820/25) who was probably her, just enumerated incorrectly. They were just a few houses from two other William Hensley's: William H. Hensley (c1813) (two houses away) and William B. Hensley (c1821) (2 houses away in the other direction). Elias Hensley was just three houses away. Since one of Elias' children married one of William M's, that might indicate they were brothers. William M. Hensley's next door neighbors were Solomon M. Ray and Morris McIntosh (brother of Delilah).
