[Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Terry Hensley as far as can be proven. He did live in the same county (Scott Co., VA) as my ancestor Larkin Hensley (c1761-1806)

Terry H. Hensley was born ca 1796/97 per his age of 63 on the 1860 census. The 1850 census showed him as 50 (born ca 1799-1800), but the 1860 entry reconciles better with other records. He appeared on the 1812 tax list so he must have been 16 already, or born ca 1796 or before. I don't know what his "H" initial stands for.

He was born in Virginia per the 1860 census. The 1850 census shows him born in SC, but that is probably wrong just like his age on that census. He may have been born in Washington County where he was living in 1812 or perhaps in the part of Washington that later became Scott County (where he also lived.)

I have not been able to determine who Terry's parents were. Since I don't know where he was born, I don't really know where to look. If we assume he was born in Washington Co., VA, then the suspects are somewhat limited.

The 1800 census for Virginia is lost.

Terry Hensley would have been about 13 years old by the time of the 1810 census There were only two Hensley households in Washington County at that time with boys about his age: William Hensley (1765/84) and Fielding Hensley (1761). William Hensley had two boys aged 10-15 (born ca 1794/1800). One of those could easily be Terry Hensley. Fielding Hensley had one son in that same age group. That could be Terry instead. There is no way to know who these boys were based only on census analysis, but assuming that Terry was in the area at the time, that means that either William or Fielding are the most likely fathers for him. There are always other possibilities though.

Terry Hansly was listed on the 1812 tax list in Washington Co., VA. He had one tithe and no horses and no slaves. This was his first appearance on any record as far as I've found. I believe he had just turned 16 at this point.

Terry Hansly was listed on the 1813 tax list in Washington with one tithe.

In 1814 Scott County was formed from the western part of Washington, taking several of the Hensleys into the new county, and apparently that included Terry.

Terry was not listed on the 1815, 1816 or 1817 tax lists in Scott County.

Terry Hensley was listed on the 1818 tax list in Scott Co., VA with 1 tithe and 1 horse.

He did not appear on the 1819 or later tax lists in Scott County. He apparently moved to Tennessee and or Alabama by this time.

For the 1820 census Terry H. Hensley would have been about 23 or 24 years old. He is not listed as a head of household in Virginia. He could have been on his own in Tennessee or Alabama but unfortunately the 1820 census is lost for all of Alabama and all of eastern Tennessee. Looking in Scott Co., VA only Fielding Hensley (c1761) had a son about Terry's age, but that is probably his proven son Nathaniel Hensley (1800).

The next record found for Terry is a marriage record dated 21 Mar 1826 in Jefferson Co., AL between Tarral H. Hensley and Adaled Morgan. This is probably Terry, in fact I'm pretty sure it is him. His wife Adaline / Adelaide Morgan was born ca 1801/02 in South Carolina. I don't know who her parents were.

I don't know what drew Terry down to central Alabama, but by the time of the 1830 census he was in Rhea Co., TN.  He is the only Hensley in the county for that census. There are some Morgans nearby: Lewis, Leithy and Washington, all could be related to his wife. Terry's household contains two adult males, the oldest one born in the 1780's. Terry wasn't that old, so he is probably the one born in the 1790's. That leaves the identity of the older male unknown. There was also an older female with them, perhaps his widowed mother or mother-in-law? No way to know for sure, but they are probably too young to be Terry's parents. There are also several children with them who are too old to be Terry and Adaline's. Perhaps he or she was married before, or perhaps they are siblings, or in-laws.

By 1840 Terry and family had moved to Anderson District, South Carolina. I don't know what drew them there, perhaps just a wander lust to move around. ** I don't have the actual census record yet.

Analysis:

By 1850 they were in neighboring Greenville Dist., SC. They were the only Hensleys there at the time. The enumerations are questionable for everyone is listed born in SC and the ages don't agree with other records.

They were still in Greenville District for the 1860 census. They were still the only Hensleys in that county.

After a hard search I finally found this family on the 1870 census in Henderson Co., NC, which actually borders Greenville Co., SC, so they didn't move all that far.

Children of Terry and Adelaide/Adaline (Morgan) Hensley. They had at least six children per the 1850 through 1880 census records.
