Mathias Hensley was born ca 1837/38 in Tennessee, probably Greene County.  There were three men of this name in the region, so there is room for confusion. This one is the oldest. The second oldest is Mathias W. Hensley (c1840), his 1^st cousin, the last is Mathias Hensley (c1852), his nephew.

Mathias Hensley is a son of Samuel Hensley (c1790) and Catherine McDavid. This is proven, more or less, by Catherine living with Mathias in 1870, though no relationships are given on that record.

Mathias would have been home with his parents in 1840, and presumably about 2 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 5" age group (born ca 1835/40). Samuel Hensley (c1790) was the only one in Greene County with an apparent son that age.

I did not find Mathias on the 1850 census, nor did I locate his parents Samuel and Catherine anywhere that year.

On 7 Jul 1856, Mathias Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Greene County, Tennessee to marry Louisa Jane Hamilton. They married on 30 Jul 1856, same county. I have no data on Louisa.

Louisa apparently died sometime before 3 Aug 1859, for on that date, Mathias Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Greene County to marry Rachel Adeline Wines. They married on the next day, 4 Jul 1859. Adeline was born ca 1842/43 in Tennessee. I don't know who her parents were.

Mathias and Adeline were listed on the 1860 census in Greene County just 6 houses from Isham Hensley (c1820), a possible 1st cousin.

Apparently Rachel Adeline Wines Hensley died before 20 Sep 1866, for on that date Mathias Hensley married Margaret Diserne in Greene County, Tennessee. I don't know who her parents were.

They are listed on the 1870 census in Scott Co., VA (thanks to Jim Brown for pointing that out): Mathias Hensly, 38 TN, Margaret 19 VA, Andrew J. 11, TN, Diannah 1 TN, Catherine 75 VA.

They are on the 1880 census in Wise Co., VA (also thanks to Jim Brown): Mathios Hensley 42 VA-VA-TN, Margaret 34 wife VA-NC-NC, Dianer 12 daughter VA-VA-VA, Jasper (or Joseph?), 10 son, Lucinda 8 daughter, Mary L, 6 daughter, Forest 2 son. They are next door to Mathias’ brother Samuel Hensley.

Mathias married Louisa Jane Hamilton on 30 Jul 1856 in Greene Co, TN. Louisa was born in Greene Co, TN. She died in 1856/1859 in Greene Co, TN.

Mathias also married Rachel Adeline Wines on 4 Aug 1859 in Greene Co, TN. Rachel was born in 1842/1843 in Greene Co, TN. She died in 1860/1866 in Greene Co, TN.

They had the following children.

Mathias also married Margaret Diserne on 20 Sep 1866 in Greene Co, TN. Margaret died after 1880 in Wise Co, VA.
