Revision History:

·        18 Apr 2008 – Reformatted by Marty Grant, a 4th great grandson of Samuel Hensley.

Special thanks to Laura White Hensley and Laura Schreibman and others for sharing their research on this family.

Samuel Hensley was born 23 Aug 1801 (per family bible) in Washington Co, VA (now Scott Co, VA). He was probably born in the area of Ketrons Creek or Cove Creek in present Scott Co, VA.

Samuel Hensley is a son of Larkin and Sarah (---) Hensley, and was named in an 1819 Scott Co, VA Court case along with the other heirs (see Larkin's page for more on that subject).

Larkin Hensley died around 1805/06, while Samuel was still very small, and it seems that Samuel's widowed mother immediately moved the family to neighboring Sullivan Co, TN and lived there in the early part of 1806. By 1808 she had moved the family to Knox County, TN and apparently settled in the corner of that county close to the Blount County border.

Unfortunately, the 1810 and 1820 census for Knox County, Tennessee was lost, so it can't be determined where Samuel was those years, though it is very likely that he would have been enumerated with his widowed mother in Knox Co, TN in both census records (though not by name, as only the head of household was listed by name in those years).

Meanwhile, back in Virginia, Scott County was formed from the western parts of Washington County in 1815. This included the majority of Ketrons Creek where the family had previously lived, though a small portion (about 1 mile) of the creek was still in Washington County.

In the February 1819 term of Scott County, Virginia Court, an interesting suit was brought by Sarah and her children, against a variety of people. Here is the first portion of the case. (See Larkin's page for a fuller transcript):

(In Chancery) Feb T 1819 1-385

Hensley Sarah, Abednego Casteel and Agness, his wife, Daniel Casteel and Rhoda, his wife, Susannah Hensley, Polly Hensley,  Catherine Hensley, Samuel Hensley, Nancy Hensley, Ichabod C. Hensley, and Thomas Hensley, Complts.

vs. Polly Benham, widow of William Benham, deceased. John, Samuel, Catherine, Joel, Sampson, Isaac Benham, heirs of said William Benham, deceased. & Elizabeth Godsey, widow of Gilbert Godsey, deceased, Abraham, Jane, Sarah & Elizabeth, heirs of said Gilbert Godsey, deceased. Catherine Johnston, widow of Thomas Johnston, deceased and Jane Johnston, his heir at law. Defts.

Rule awarded against said defts to give security and as to nature of said cause (Scott Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1)

The above record seems to show Samuel Hensley was a sibling to those other Hensleys named. This and other records probably indicate that Samuel was a sibling to Agness, Rhoda, Thomas, et al.

On 28 May 1823, Samuel Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Knox Co, TN to marry Nancy Johnston. Aaron Hood was the bondsman, (and on the same date, Aaron Hood obtained a marriage bond to marry Samuel's sister Nancy Hensley). Both couples were married the next day 29 May 1823 by Robert McBath in Knox Co, TN. It seems reasonable to assume that Samuel and his sister Nancy married their respective spouses in a joint ceremony, or at the very least, in consecutive ceremonies.

Nancy Johnston (also Johnson) was born 6 Nov 1804 (per family bible) in Tennessee, possibly in Knox County, though that isn't proven. An old letter states that Nancy's father was Samuel Johnston, and that Nancy had a twin sister named Milly married to a Mr. Roddy. Further research has shown that a Milly Johnston married Samuel Roddy on 15 Feb 1825 in Knox Co, TN and that the Roddy's lived near the Hensleys in Monroe Co, TN for a time. There were numerous Johnstons / Johnsons in Knox Co, TN and many later in Monroe Co, TN. It is doubtful that all of these were related to one another, but many seemed to be connected. See Samuel Johnston's page for more on the Johnston family.

Samuel and wife Nancy soon moved to nearby Monroe Co, TN settling somewhere just east of the Tellico River, possibly near the Ball Play community where his brother Thomas later moved.

Samuel and his brother Thomas were both in Monroe Co, TN as early as 1828 when, as members of the local Militia, they were both witnesses to a murder that took place during one of the musters. The transcript of this case (shared by Laura Schreibman) gives their testimony about the case, and while interesting, gives no Hensley family data, other than showing that Samuel and Thomas were there together.

Samuel Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in Monroe Co, TN, just 5 houses from his brother Thomas Hensley. Samuel was also just two houses from his brother-in-law Samuel Roddy (married to Millie Johnston), and only 4 houses from a Benjamin Johnson who I suspect is also a brother-in-law.

Samuel Hensley and his brother Thomas Hensley were listed side by side on the 1836 tax list for Monroe Co, TN in the 17th Civil District. Neither had any land, but were each charged for 1 poll, and taxed 50 cents each.

Samuel Hensley, Thomas Hensley, Samuel Roddy and other relatives and neighbors in the 17th Civil District, signed a petition on 19 Nov 1837 to have the boundary with Blount County altered. Samuel Hensley and Samuel Roddy were listed as residents on the south side of the River (Tennessee River), and Thomas Hensley was on the north side of the river. ("History of Monroe Co, TN, Vol I, Part I", by Sarah G. Cox Sands, pg 371.)

Samuel Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Monroe Co, TN. This time he was not listed near his brother Thomas Hensley. He was listed between Solomon Akins and Henry Lowery? and just two houses from brother-in-law Samuel Roddy.

Samuel Hensley signed an 1843 Petition for the formation of a new county. He signed as "Sam. Hensley", and immediately after his name was "Marshel Hensley", who could be son Joseph M. Hensley (1825). It is possible that this was a different Samuel Hensley entirely, but I don't think so, as many of the other names listed were their known neighbors and relatives. ("History of Monroe Co, TN, Vol I, Part I", by Sarah G. Cox Sands, pg 391.)

Samuel Hensley and family were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe Co, TN. They were listed between the households of Thomas Harrison and Michael Harrison. Daughter Sarah Millsaps was just a few houses away, and future son-in-law Lafayette George was just a few houses away also, home with his parents.

Samuel Hensley died on 7 Oct 1852, and Nancy died 10 days later on 17 Oct 1852, both dates recorded in the Family Bible. Since they died so close together, and relatively young, I can't help but wonder what happened. The most likely scenario is that they caught some sort of infectious disease and died.

Children of Samuel Hensley and Nancy Johnson. Samuel and Nancy had nine children, as named in the Family Bible of their daughter Margaret Hensley Cooper (as shared with me by Juanita Weaver). Several of these are confirmed by other sources as well. They had 5 sons, and 4 of them died young, with Robert Hensley being the only one reaching adulthood, but he never married. The 4 daughters all married and left numerous offspring, except daughter Emaline who married, but had no children. Here is a transcript of the Family Bible record:

Samual Hensly and Nancy Johnson were married May 29, 1823.

Samual Hensley was born Aug 23, 1801.

Nancy (Johnson) Hensley was born Nov. 6, 1804.

5.      Robert J. Hensley (1834)

6.      Luther H. Hensley (1837)

7.      Benjamin Hensley (1840)

8.      Margaret Ann Hensley (1843)

9.      John J. Hensley (1847)

Joseph M. Hensley was born 4 Mar 1825 (per Family Bible), presumably in Monroe Co, TN, or possibly in Knox Co, TN. I'm not sure who he was named for, nor what the "M" initial might have stood for. It might stand for "Martin", as his sister Sarah named one of her children "Joseph Martin Millsaps". It might also be "Marshall", as there was a "Marshel Hensley" who signed an 1843 Monroe Co, TN petition just after Samuel Hensley signed. This person has been a puzzle for many years. At that time (1843), Joseph M. Hensley would have been 18 years old, so perhaps it is him.

Joseph was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and apparently still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25).

Joseph M. Hensley died 4 Jul 1847 (per Family Bible) at the age of 22, and presumably unmarried. I'm not sure what his cause of death was, nor where he is buried though presumably somewhere in Monroe County.

Sarah Elizabeth Hensley was born 22 Jun 1826 (per Family Bible), presumably in Monroe Co, TN, or possibly in Knox Co, TN. She was possibly named after her paternal grandmother Sarah (---) Hensley, and if so, then perhaps "Elizabeth" was the name of her maternal grandmother (just a guess though).

Sarah (also known as "Sally") was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age under 5, born ca 1825/30) and apparently still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

On 2 Nov 1841, Sally Hensley married Adam Millsaps in Monroe Co, TN (per Monroe Co, TN Marriage records). Adam was born ca 1820/21 in Monroe Co, TN, son of Michael and Martha (---) Millsaps. The Millsaps had been neighbors to the Hensleys for several years before and after their marriage.

Adam and Sarah and family were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe Co, TN, just 5 houses from her parents.

Moore County was formed in 1871 from a portion of Franklin County, and the Millsaps were then in the new county.

Sarah Elizabeth Hensley Millsaps died sometime between ca 1871 and 1880, presumably in Moore Co, TN.

Adam Millsaps was listed on the 1880 census in Moore Co, TN living with his married son Michael Millsaps and his family. Several of Adam and Sarah's unmarried children were living with them also.

Adam Millsaps died sometime between 1880 and 1900, presumably in Moore Co., TN.

Adam and Sarah's numerous children are proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records.

Rachel Burnette Hensley was born 9 Feb 1829 (per Family Bible and tombstone), in Monroe Co, TN. I don't know if she was named for a relative, nor why "Burnette" was used for her middle name. It may be a clue to other family connections. There were Burnetts in both Knox and Monroe Counties on the 1830 census.

Rachel was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30) and apparently still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

Rachel was still home with her parents for the 1850 census, listed as "Rachael" age 21. Her future husband was just a couple of households away.

On 11 Feb 1851, Lafayette George obtained a marriage bond in Monroe Co, TN to marry "Rachel B. Hensley". They were married three days later on 13 Feb 1851. Lafayette George was born 17 Feb 1830 in Blount Co, TN, son of Charles Noden George and Celia Smith, who were neighbors of the Hensleys in Monroe Co, TN  beginning in the 1840's.

In the mid 1850's, they moved over to what is now Graham County, North Carolina (then part of Cherokee County, NC), and remained there. Lafayette died in the Civil War in 1864. On 7 Nov 1873, widow Rachel married a widower, James C. Cooper in Graham Co, NC. Jimmy was an Uncle to Rachel's brother-in-law William W. Cooper (married to Margaret Hensley), so that is probably how they met. They both died in Graham County, NC, Jimmy on 11 Jul 1904, and Rachel on 11 Sep 1909 at age 80. They are buried at Cheoah Church Cemetery ("Old Mother Cemetery") in Robbinsville, Graham County, NC. Brother Robert Hensley is buried next to Rachel in an unmarked grave.

See their own page for more details on Rachel, Lafayette and James C. Cooper and their children.

Emaline D. Hensley was born 14 Nov 1830 (per Family Bible) or 14 Nov 1831 (per an Indian Wars Pension Application and her tombstone). She was presumably born in Monroe Co, TN. I don't know if she was named for a relative, nor what her middle initial of "D" might be for. If the records giving their grandmother Hensley as "Emmie" are correct, then perhaps she was named after her, as "Emmie" is most likely short for "Emaline".

Emaline was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

On 15 Nov 1849, "Emeline Hensley" married Calvin Harrison at her father Samuel Hensley's house in Monroe Co, TN. The date and county are from the marriage bond, and the actual place (Samuel's house) is from her Union Soldier Widow's pension application.

Calvin Harrison was born 20 Jan 1816 in TN, county not known, son of William and Nancy (Adams) Harrison.

Calvin and Emaline were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe Co, TN. They were not near her parents, but they were next door to William Harrison and wife Louisa George. William was Calvin's nephew, and Louisa George was sister to Lafayette George, who married Rachel Hensley, Emaline's sister.

Calvin Harrison died on 6 Oct 1888 in Monroe Co, TN.

Calvin Harrison had been a Union soldier in the Civil War, and on 7 Aug 1890, Emaline applied for a widow's pension based on that. Here is one of the affidavits from that file, as shared with me by Laura Schreibman:

State of Tennessee, County of Monroe, On this 7th day of August, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid, Emeline Harrison, aged 58 years, a resident of the (blank) of Ipse, County of Monroe, State of Tennessee, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Calvin Harrison who enlisted under the name of Calvin Harrison at Madisonville, Tenn, on the 25 day of July A.D. 1864 in Company H, 3d Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry and served at least ninety days in the late war of the Rebellion who was Honorably Discharged at Knoxville, Tenn November 30, 1864 and died Oct 6th, 1888. That she was married under the name of Emeline Hensley to said Calvin Harrison on the 15th day of November, 1849 by Thomas Harrison, Esq at Samuel Hensley's in 17th District, Monroe ... (more) Signed: Emeline Harrison, Witnesses Perry Johnson, F.T. Milligan.

Emaline apparently joined her sister Margaret in Cherokee Co, NC after Calvin's death.

Emaline died on 6 Sep 1896 in Cherokee County, North Carolina and is buried beside her sister Margaret at the Peachtree Cemetery in Cherokee Co, NC. Her tombstone says "Emaline Harrison Born Nov 14 1831 Died Sep 6 1896."

Calvin and Emaline died leaving no children. According to Laura Schreibman, there was a court battle over their estate, with the Harrison family attempting to claim it, and Emaline's brother Robert Hensley also attempting to claim it. I don't have any details yet.

Robert J. Hensley was born 18 Aug 1834 (per Family Bible), in Monroe Co, TN. I don't know who he was named for, nor what his middle initial of "J" stood for. Some of his cousins (children and grandchildren of Thomas Hensley, as told to me by Laura Schreibman) remembered him as "Robin" Hensley ("Robin" is a known, though uncommon, nickname for "Robert"), and that he never married. He was also known to relatives as "Bob" Hensley.

Robert was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

Robert was still home with his parents for the 1850 census, listed as "Robert" age 15. That, strangely, is the last record we can find for him until the 1890's when he is mentioned in a court case involving the estate of his sister Emaline Hensley Harrison and her husband Calvin Harrison, both of whom died without children. The Court records (as told to me by Laura Schreibman) show that Robert lived with Calvin and Emaline for many years prior to their deaths. I have no further details on this case, but I would like to find out more.

I don't know where he was hiding in 1860, 1870, 1880 or 1900, but he was not found on those census records in Monroe Co, TN, nor elsewhere it seems. He was never listed with his sister Emaline Harrison on the census.

I did find a Robert Hansley in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN in 1880. He was single, aged 49, born in TN, father born in VA, mother in TN. All that fits, though the age is off a little. He was listed as an Engineer and was boarding with a family. This could be Robert J. Hensley, but I'm not sure.

Robert J. Hensley died on 9 Feb 1906 in Graham County, North Carolina. He is buried in an unmarked grave next to his sister Rachel Hensley George Cooper at the Old Mother Cemetery (Cheoah Church) in Robbinsville, Graham Co, NC. A very old cemetery survey (which appears to be based not only on tombstones, but church records as well) shows "Bob Hensley" next to Rachel. I've been to the cemetery, and there is an apparent unmarked grave next to Rachel, so I suspect that is Robert. A comment on the cemetery survey next to "Bob Hensley" says he is an Uncle to Nancy Wiggins. Of course Nancy was Rachel's daughter, so this confirms that this is the grave of Robert J. Hensley.

Luther H. Hensley was born 8 Aug 1837 (per Family Bible), in Monroe Co, TN. I'm not sure who he was named for, if anyone, nor what the "H" initial might have stood for. As far as I've found, there were no other "Luthers" in the Hensley family prior to him, so he may not have been named after a relative.  He did obviously inspire a namesake, his sister Sarah named one of her children "Luther Millsaps".

Luther was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40).

Luther was not home with his parents in 1850, nor found elsewhere, so it is presumed that he died between 1840 and 1850, though his date of death was not recorded in his sister Margaret's Family Bible.

Benjamin Hensley was born 15 Apr 1840 (per Family Bible), in Monroe Co, TN. I'm not sure who he was named for, but I suspect he was named after Benjamin Johnson, his probable maternal Uncle.

Benjamin was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40).

Benjamin was home with his parents in 1850, listed as "Benjamin" age 12 (born ca 1837/38) which does not match the birth date given in his sister Margaret's Family Bible.

Benjamin Hensley died on 3 Oct 1857 (per Family Bible), at age 17, presumably in Monroe Co, TN. I don't know where he is buried.

Margaret Ann Hensley was born 26 Apr 1843 (per Family Bible), in Monroe Co, TN. I don't know if she was named for a relative or not.

Margaret was home with her parents for the 1850 census, listed as "Margarett" age 10 (born ca 1839/40), which disagrees with her Bible record.

Margaret's parents died when she was only 9 year old, and I don't know who raised her after that. I did not find her on the 1860 census at all.

She may have lived with her sister Rachel Hensley George in neighboring Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC, for she married in Cherokee Co, NC ca 1861 to William Wayne Cooper (no marriage record found).

William W. Cooper was born 21 Oct 1830 (per Bible), son of Thomas Jefferson Cooper and Frances Deaver. William was a nephew to James C. Cooper who later married Rachel Hensley George (in 1873).

William and Margaret made their home in Valleytown Township of Cherokee Co, NC, and were listed there for the 1870 census.

William and Margaret were back in Cherokee Co, NC for the 1900 census. The census taker listed the full birth dates for each person! They were next door to Joseph H. Millsaps (1860 TN) who is probably related to their brother-in-law Adam Millsaps, though I don't know how exactly.

W. W. Cooper died on 31 Mar 1903 and Margaret died on 8 May 1907, both are buried at Peachtree Cemetery in Cherokee County, North Carolina. Margaret's sister Emaline is next to her.

John J. Hensley was born 15 Jan 1847 (per Family Bible), in Monroe Co, TN. I'm not sure who he was named for. His middle name might be "Jonas", but I'm not sure of that.

John J. Hensley was home with his parents in 1850, though his name is hard to read, it seems to say "Jomas", age 3 (born ca 1846/47) which matches the birth date given in his sister Margaret's Family Bible. The first time I read this census, many years ago, I incorrectly read his name as "Thomas", but on closer inspection, I'm sure it does not say "Thomas" at all, but I'm not totally sure what it says.

John J. Hensley died on 18 Mar 1854 (per Family Bible), at age 7, presumably in Monroe Co, TN. I don't know where he is buried.
