Sarah (Bishop?) Hensley (c1818) of Warren Co, TN and Marion Co, AR[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am not related to Sarah Hensley as far as I know. I'm basing my analysis of Sarah's family on the assumption that she was a widow of an unknown Hensley, and that she was a daughter of Joseph and Winne Bishop, with whom she was residing in 1850. I could be wrong about this, but it seems correct on the surface of the evidence. Sarah Bishop was born ca 1817/18 (per 1850 census) in Tennessee, county unknown, though possibly in Warren County, where she was residing in 1850. Like I mentioned above, I don't know if "Bishop" is her maiden name or not. It is also possible that she was a Hensley by birth, and a single parent. Sarah is possibly the daughter of Joseph and Winne (---) Bishop (both born ca 1780 in Virginia), with whom she was living in 1850. If they are not her parents, then I suspect they are related in some other fashion. Sarah married a Mr. Hensley sometime prior to ca 1836 in Tennessee, perhaps in Warren County. I have no clues who her husband was. Whomever Mr. Hensley was, he might be a son or somehow closely related to Henry Hensley (c1783) of Warren Co, TN. The 1880 census entry for their son John A. Hensley showed his father's birth place as Kentucky. If that is correct, then he probably isn't closely connected to the Henry Hensley family since they were not in Kentucky as far as I know. They should have been listed on the 1840 census, but I don't see any likely suspects. I found several Joseph Bishops in 1840, but none in Warren County. I suspect wherever Joseph was, Sarah was also (if they are father and daughter, as I suspect). The closest I could find was a Joseph Bishop in McNairy Co, TN, as was an unidentified James Hensley (1810/20). This county was in Western Tennessee, and not near Warren County at all, but it wasn't unheard of for folks to move back eastward after being in the west. Whoever Mr. Hensley was, he apparently died between ca 1844 (birth date of Sarah's last child) and ca 1850, for Sarah was listed as an apparent widow on the 1850 census. In 1850, Sarah and her children were living with her supposed parents Joseph and Winne Bishop in Warren County, Tennessee. There were other Hensleys in the county, but none nearby.

I did find a John Hensley close in age to her son John, and he was next door to widow Martha Hensley, widow of Henry Hensley (c1783). If that is the same John, then that suggests a familial relationship between Sarah and the Henry Hensley family, but I'm not sure if it is the same John. The age is off by about 4 years, but that isn't too far off considering common census problems. I found a possible match to this Sarah in 1860 in Marion County, Arkansas. I think it is the same Sarah, but I am not totally positive. She was there with her son John A. Hensley living with her, and no other Hensleys nearby (but a J. W. Hensley (c1838 TN) was in the county also, but not close to her).

John A. Hensley moved to Taney Co, MO by 1870, and there was a Sarah Henslee there that year also, aged 60 (born ca 1809/10 TN), who might be this same Sarah, but I don't think it is her, but could be wrong. ChildrenSarah had 3 children with her in 1850. I have very little additional data on any of them. Son John went to Taney Co, MO, then back to Boone Co, AR by 1880.
