Thomas Hensley (1800/10) of Campbell Co, TN

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Thomas Hensley as far as I know.

Thomas Hensley was born ca 1800/10 (per 1840 census). I don't know what state he was born in, though Tennessee is a possibility, since he was living there in 1840.

I know very little about Thomas. He is found on the 1840 census in Campbell County, Tennessee, and, frankly that is the only record I have on him so far.

Thomas would have probably been home with his parents for the 1810 and 1820 census, but assuming he was in Tennessee then, those records are lost.

In 1840, he had an apparent wife, also born ca 1800/10, and 4 children, including the oldest, born ca 1825/30, thus indicating he was married prior to 1830, and should therefore be listed somewhere on the 1830 census. I did not find a listing for Thomas Hensley in 1830, at least not in Tennessee. I didn't find any likely suspects in other states either in 1830.

However, for the 1840 census, Thomas was listed in Campbell County, Tennessee. There were no other Hensleys in the county. A close examination of his name shows that it might actually say Hemsley. And if that is correct, that could explain why I haven't found additional data on him, considering he wasn't a Hensley at all.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810)	Thomas HENSLEY (1800/10) s/o ?
1 Male(s) 10-14 (1825-1830)	Son? (1825/30)
2 Male(s) 5-9 (1830-1835)	Son? (1830/35)
					Son? (1830/35)
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1800-1810)	Wife? (1800/10)
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Daughter? (1835/40)

I did not find Thomas Hensley on the 1850 census, nor any other Hensleys in Campbell County in 1850. I checked several other states and found no likely matches. There is a Lucinda Hensley (c1834) in Campbell in 1860. Perhaps she is related somehow.

It is possible that Thomas' family is the same as that of widow Mary --- Hensley (c1809) of TN and Calhoun Co, AL, but that is far from proven.

Children

I have no data on any of Thomas' apparent children.
