Revision History:

·        18 Apr 2008 – Reformatted by Marty Grant, a 4th great grand nephew of Thomas Hensley.

Special thanks to Laura White Hensley and Laura Schreibman and others for sharing their research on this family.

Thomas Hensley was born 17 Mar 1806 in Sullivan Co, TN (both facts per his Indian War Pension application).

Thomas Hensley is a son of Larkin and Sarah (---) Hensley, and was named in an 1819 Scott Co, VA Court case along with the other heirs (see Larkin's page for more on that subject). Thomas' granddaughter Dollie Bradley Hensley (1873) wrote out a brief family record stating: "Major Thomas Hensley mothers name was Emmie Childres". I can't reconcile this statement with the other evidence used to determine Thomas' parentage.

Larkin died around 1805/06, while Thomas was either very small or not quite born yet. It seems that Thomas' widowed mother immediately moved the family to neighboring Sullivan Co, TN and were there in the early part of 1806. By 1808 she had moved the family to Knox County, TN and apparently settled in the corner of that county close to the Blount County border.

Thomas was the last child born to Larkin Hensley, possibly born after his father died, or just before his death. Further proof that Thomas was the last child is found in his being the last named heir in the 1819 court case. He was the only child not known to be born in Washington Co, VA. However, since the family lived just across the Sullivan Co, TN line in Washington (now Scott) Co, VA, it is not hard to believe that Thomas was born there. This makes even more sense if we consider the possibility that Larkin might have died before his last son was born, and therefore, mom and family all moved across the border to live with or near her relatives in Sullivan. This is just a theory, but it makes sense to me.

The 1810 census was lost for Tennessee, but Thomas would most likely have been home with his widowed mother in Knox Co, TN that year, and also in 1820, which was also lost for Knox County.

Thomas was listed on the 1819 Scott County, Virginia Court case as "Thomas Hensley", and as mentioned before, he was the last name given. Scott County was formed from the western parts of Washington County in 1815. This included the majority of Ketrons Creek where the family had previously lived, though a small portion (about 1 mile) of the creek was still in Washington County.

In the February 1819 term of Scott County, Virginia Court, an interesting suit was brought by Sarah and her children, against a variety of people. Here is the first portion of the case. (See Larkin's page for a fuller transcript):

(In Chancery) Feb T 1819 1-385

Hensley Sarah, Abednego Casteel and Agness, his wife, Daniel Casteel and Rhoda, his wife, Susannah Hensley, Polly Hensley,  Catherine Hensley, Samuel Hensley, Nancy Hensley, Ichabod C. Hensley, and Thomas Hensley, Complts.

vs. Polly Benham, widow of William Benham, deceased. John, Samuel, Catherine, Joel, Sampson, Isaac Benham, heirs of said William Benham, deceased. & Elizabeth Godsey, widow of Gilbert Godsey, deceased, Abraham, Jane, Sarah & Elizabeth, heirs of said Gilbert Godsey, deceased. Catherine Johnston, widow of Thomas Johnston, deceased and Jane Johnston, his heir at law. Defts.

Rule awarded against said defts to give security and as to nature of said cause (Scott Co, VA Court Minutes Book 1)

The above record seems to show Thomas Hensley was a sibling to those other Hensleys named. This record is seemingly confirmed by Thomas' descendants who remembered Samuel's children visiting Thomas (their Uncle).

Apparently Thomas Hensley joined his older brother Samuel who moved to nearby Monroe County, TN in the mid 1820's. They were both there as early as 1828 when, as members of the Militia, they were both witnesses to a murder that took place during one of the musters. The transcript of this case (shared by Laura Schreibman) gives their testimony about the case, and while interesting, gives no Hensley family data, other than showing that Samuel and Thomas were there together.

It was around this time, (circa 1828) that Thomas Hensley married Elizabeth Watson in Monroe Co, TN. No actual marriage record has been located, so the exact date is unknown. Elizabeth was born 20 May 1809 somewhere in TN. Her father is unknown, but family tradition gives her mother's name as "Sarah Ann Tipton". The 1880 census entry for Elizabeth shows her born in TN, but both parents born in North Carolina.

Thomas and Elizabeth made their home in the what is called the Ball Play community, which is just east of the Tellico River, just a few miles north of Tellico Plains in north central Monroe County. It is believed that his brother Samuel lived near this same area.

Thomas Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in Monroe Co, TN. His brother Samuel was just five houses away. Thomas was listed between Benjamin Johnson and an apparent widow Sarah Grisham. A couple of Watsons were nearby, including Valentine Watson just two houses away. He seems old enough to be Elizabeth Watson Hensley's father, but I have no evidence that he was. Thomas Hensley had an older woman with him in 1830, born ca 1780/90. This could be Elizabeth's widowed mother, or possibly an older sister, or other older relative.

Thomas Hensley and his brother Samuel Hensley were listed side by side on the 1836 tax list for Monroe Co, TN in the 17th Civil District. Neither had any land, but were each charged for 1 poll, and taxed 50 cents each.

Thomas Hensley was still in Monroe Co, TN for the 1840 census. The older woman (born ca 1780/90) who was with him in 1830, still seemed to be with him in 1840 also.

Thomas and family were listed in Monroe Co, TN for the 1850 census in the 8th Civil District. The older woman who had been with him back in 1840 and 1830 was no longer here, so perhaps she had died in the 1840's, whoever she was.

Thomas and family were in the 15th District for the 1860 census. Thomas' was the last name on the page, and his wife and children were listed on the next page, but the census taker gave them a different family and house number, making it appear that they lived in different households, but I'd wager this was just a census error.

Thomas Hensley and family were listed in Monroe Co, TN on the 1870 census, though this time in the 16th District (I can't help but wonder if the district lines were poorly defined).

Elizabeth Watson Hensley died on 6 Apr 1884, and Thomas Hensley died on 4 Apr 1897, both in Monroe Co, TN.  I'm not sure where they were buried.

Children of Thomas Hensley and Elizabeth Watson. Thomas and Elizabeth had ten children, all but one proven by census records. These names were also recorded in a Family Bible, I think, but I don't have a copy of it.

1.      Nancy Hensley (1829)

2.      Modean Lavina Hensley (1831)

3.      Henderson Hensley (1833)

4.      Lucinda Hensley (1835)

5.      Henry S. Hensley (1837)

6.      Sarah Ann Hensley (1839)

7.      Melvina Hensley (1841)

8.      Catherine Hensley (1845)

9.      Perrin Hensley (1846)

10.  Pryor Hensley

Nancy Hensley was born 2 Aug 1829 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. She was possibly named after her father's sister Nancy Hensley. Nancy was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and apparently home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and home in 1850 ("Nancy" age 19).

Nancy Hensley married Joseph Robert ("Joe Bob") Humphries sometime before ca 1858 in Monroe Co, TN. I found no marriage record, but this marriage was shared by the two Laura's based on family knowledge. Joseph was born ca 1817/18 in Tennessee, county unknown. Laura Hensley reports that Joe Bob's father was John Jehue Humphrey.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Monroe Co, TN in the 16th District.

Nancy died on 5 Jul 1862 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN.

I couldn't find Joseph on the 1870 census.

Joseph B. Humphries died on 10 Sep 1872 (source?) in Whitfield Co., GA.

Modean Lavina Hensley was born 17 Jun 1831 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. Modean was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and home in 1850 ("Madina" age 17), and home in 1860 ("Lavina" age 21), and home in 1870 ("Modean" age 30), and still home in 1880 ("Modenise" age 39). She was with her sister Melvina for the 1900 census ("Modena" born Jun 1832, 67 years old.)

Modean never married.

** I don't have her on the 1910 or 1920 census yet.

She died on 14 Jun 1920 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. She is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery.

Henderson Hensley was born 17 Jan 1833 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. Henderson was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35).

Henderson Hensley died in October 1849 (per 1850 Census Mortality Schedule) in Monroe Co, TN.

Lucinda Hensley was born 17 Jan 1835 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home in 1850 ("Lucinda" age 15).

On 20 Feb 1860, John L. Bradley obtained a marriage bond in Monroe County to marry "Lucinda Hensley". They were married on 23 Feb 1860. John Leroy Bradley was born ca 1828/29 in Tennessee. I don't know who his parents were.

John and Lucinda were on the 1860 census in Monroe County just a couple of houses from her sister Nancy Hensley Humphries.

Lucinda Hensley Bradley died ca 1877 in Monroe Co, TN. Laura Schreibman says that Lucinda was thrown from a horse and died. She is buried at the Ebenezer Cemetery.

John and children were still in Monroe for the 1880 census.

John later married Lucinda's sister Melvina Hensley (see her section below).

John L. Bradley died ca 1890 in Monroe Co, TN. He is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery.

Henry S. Hensley was born 5 Feb 1837 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and still home in 1850 ("Henry" age 11).

On 21 Mar 1860, Henry Hensley married Dolly Jane Grant in Monroe Co, TN. Dolly was born 27 Apr 1839 (source?) in Blount Co, TN, daughter of John Grant and Sarah Morris. [Note: I have written and published a book on this Grant family. Click here for details.]

Henry and Dolly were listed on the 1860 census in Monroe County next door to sister Sarah Hensley Humphries.

I did not find Henry nor Dollie on the 1880 census. I don't know if they died before then, or moved away. It seems that they died for I found several of their younger children still in Monroe County but living with Aunts and Uncles on this census.

Sarah Ann Hensley was born 14 Apr 1839 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and still home in 1850 ("Sarah" age 9).

On 24 Mar 1860, Sarah Hensley married Moses Humphries in Monroe Co, TN. Moses was born ca 1835/36 in Tennessee. Presumably he is related to Joseph Robert Humphries who married Nancy Hensley. Laura Hensley reports that Moses' parents were Nathaniel T. Humphries and Mary "Polly" Hamontree.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Monroe County next door to brother Henry Hensley.

I was unable to locate this family on the 1870 census.

They were in Monroe County for the 1880 census.

I don't have them on the 1910 census yet.

Sarah Hensley Humphries died on 6 Jan 1917, and is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery.

I don't have Moses' date of death.

Melvina Hensley was born 17 Jun 1841 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Malvina" age 7), and with them in 1860 ("Melvina" age 16), and still home in 1870 ("Melvina" age 251), and still home in 1880 ("Melvinia" age 30).

Sometime after 1880, Melvina married John Leroy Bradley, who was widowed from Melvina's sister Lucinda.

She was listed on the 1900 census in Monroe County with sister Modena and a couple of her nieces.)

I don't yet have her on the 1910 or 1920 census, but presumably she was in Monroe County those years.

Melvina Hensley Bradley died on 13 Mar 1928 and is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery.

Catherine Hensley was born 17 Sep 1845 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Catherine" age 4), and with them in 1860 ("Catherine" age 12). She was not home in 1870, so probably had married by then.

Laura S. tells me that Catherine was first married to a Mr. Smith, (given name unknown), and that after his death, she married Ben P. Reagan. I don't have marriage dates for either, but I'd guestimate her and Mr. Smith at ca 1860/70, and her and Ben P. Reagan at ca 1870/80. Ben was born ca 1824/25 in Tennessee.

I was unable to find a Catherine Smith (or Reagan) on the 1870 census in Monroe Co., TN.

Catherine was married to Ben P. Reagan before 1880, for she was listed with him on the 1880 census in Monroe County.

Perrin Hensley was born 5 Jun 1846 (source?) in Monroe Co, TN. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Perrin" age 2), and with them in 1860 ("Parion" age 10), and still home in 1870 ("Perrin" age 21).

Between 1870 and ca 1873, Perrin Hensley married Louise Catherine Britton in Monroe Co, TN. She was born 13 Aug 1860 (source?), daughter of Albert Britton and Mary A. Robinson (all of these facts per to Laura Schreibman).

Perrin and Louisa were listed on the 1880 census in Monroe County, in District 16 next door to his parents.

Louisa Catherine Britton Hensley died on 1 Jan 1910, and Perrin Hensley died on 1 Jan 1915, both are buried at the Ebenezer Cemetery in Monroe County.

Pryor Hensley died young. I have no birth or death date for him.
