> Benjamin Hensley
The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Benjamin Hensley
as far as can be proven. There is certainly a possibility that he is an
ancestor of my ancestor Larkin
Hensley (c1761-1806).
I refer to this man as Benjamin Hensley (3) in an
attempt to distinguish him from the several other Benjamins, as he is the
third of this name that I'm aware of. It is quite possible that he is the
same person as Benjamin
Hensley (2). See the analysis page
for the various early Benjamin Hensleys.
Special thanks to Laura Schreibman for data shared on this
family.
Benjamin Hensley was born before ca 1702 based on
his first public record in his own behalf being dated 1723, and assuming
he was at least 21 then. If he is the same person as Benjamin Hensley (2)
then he was probably born in the late 1600's.
Benjamin's parents are unknown, but I have him listed as a
son of Benjamin Hensley (2).
I've mentioned already that they might be one and the same person, though
there is room for doubt about that. Refer to the page for Benjamin (2) for
records on him going back to the year 1700 and ending in 1719 and 1720.
Benjamin Hensley (3) married Elizabeth --- before
1723. Her maiden name is unknown. This is the first in a long line of
Benjamin Hensley's with a wife named "Elizabeth" which makes for much
confusion.
If this is the same person as Benjamin (2) he lived in
neighboring Essex County through 1719, but by 1720 was back in Richmond
County.
On 4 Apr 1720 William Berry, son of Henry Berry, deceased,
of Hanover Parish, Richmond Co., VA sold land to Benjamin Hensle of
same place, for 5 shillings. The land was described as being left to
William by his father, and divided equally between William and his sister
Martha Berry. The land was 150 acres bordering Robert Peck, Robert
Richards, his Uncle William Berry, Huckleberry Swamp, and brother John
Berry. Witnesses were Alexander Mecants and Samuel Dishman Jr.
[Sparacio, Ruth, Deed Abstracts of Richmond County, Virginia 1719-1721]
In 1720 King George County was formed from the upper parts
of Richmond and Westmoreland Counties to be effective in 1721. This land
was in the new county.
On 30 Jul 1723, Benjamin Hensle and wife Elizabeth
of King George County sold land to Thomas Reiley and wife Elizabeth of
Stafford County for 5000 pounds of tobacco, being 100 acres, part of the
land obtained from William Berry. The land was from the eastern part of
Benjamin's plantation without taking any of the the housing or any cleared
ground. The deed was signed by Benja. Hensle and Eliza Henslee
signed with a mark. Witnesses were Thomas Gregsby and James Kay.
Elizabeth, wife of Benjamin, relinquished her dower rights to the land on
2 Aug 1723. [King George Co., VA Deed Book 1]
The above deed would have left Benjamin with about 50
acres, though they didn't keep that land long.
On 27 Dec 1725, Benjamin Henslee and wife Elizabeth
of King George County sold 50 acres to John Holdsworth of same place for
4000 pounds of tobacco. The land was described as bordering Thomas Reiley,
Thomas Williams, John Berry and Robert Strother. Witnesses were Joseph
Berry and James Kay. [King George Co., VA Deed Book 1 page 324]
On 1 Sep 1726 Thomas Reiley and wife Elizabeth sold the
above 100 acres and referred to it as being near the plantation where
Benjamin Henslee now lives. [King George Co., VA Deed Book 1 page 371]
On 4 Aug 1727 Joseph Berry, Robert Strother and Benjamin
Hensley witnessed a deed in King George from Henry Berry of Spotsylvania
Co., VA. [King George Co., VA Deed Book 1 page 440]
The above is the last sure record I have for Benjamin
Hensley (3). Around this same time Benjamin Hensley Junr appears in King
George Co., VA records and soon moves to Hanover Co., VA. This "Junr" is
Benjamin Hensley (4).
What happened to Benjamin (3) after 1727? Did he die
around then or did he move somewhere else? It is difficult to say.
There is a possibility that some of the records for
Benjamin (3) and Benjamin (4) are mixed up.
Children: I have Benjamin Hensley (3)
listed as the father of Benjamin Hensley (4),
but I have no solid proof of that relationship. Benjamin (4) did live in King George at
the same time as Benjamin (3) and they did know the same people according
to a 1727 deed. See the page for Benjamin (4) for more information.
Benjamin (3) may also be the father of a
Samuel Hensley who was in
Louisa County for awhile, and also of
John Hensley who was in Louisa
County and associated with Benjamin (4) and Samuel. More research is
needed to properly sort these out.
