> Charles Hensley
The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Charles Hensley
as far as can be proven. He did live in the same county (Washington Co.,
VA) as my ancestor Larkin
Hensley (c1761-1806) though only briefly.
Special Thanks to Ruthe Muench and Laura Schreibman for information shared on
this family.
Note: Some early Russell Co., VA Tax lists are available
online.
Charles Hensley was born before ca 1741,
presumably somewhere in Virginia. I base his birth date on his first known
public record being dated 1762, and assuming he was at least 21 for it.
Early on, Charles was with members of the Benjamin Hensley
- Elizabeth Hickman family in Virginia and North Carolina and that makes
it seem likely he is closely related to them. I think he is a son
of Benjamin Hensley
and Elizabeth Hickman, but I have no real evidence for that, just a
hunch.
Several records have been found for Charles Hensley in
different places, so it isn't 100% sure they are all for the same man, but
I think they probably are.
On 20 Feb 1762, Charles Hensley sued George Watkins in
Halifax Co., VA court. This is the first record found for Charles.
(Halifax Co., VA Pleas [Court Orders] No. 3, 1759 - 1762, p. 446, from
Library of Virginia Microfilm Roll 55, shared by Laura Schreibman.)
Charles Hansley was listed on the 1768 tax list in
Rowan Co., NC.
Charles Hensley was listed on the 1774 tax list in
Surry Co., NC (Surry was formed from Rowan in 1770).
Charles Hensley was listed on the 1782 tax list in
Montgomery Co., VA, with 1 tithe.
By 1784 Charles Hensley was in Washington Co., VA
(bordered Montgomery), listed in the same company with
Hickman Hensley (1759),
probably his nephew or much younger brother. Charles had 1 tithe
(himself), no horses, 1 cow, and no slaves. They were both in Alexander
Barnett's district. The other Hensleys in the county were in James Fulkerson's
district. Washington County was huge at this point so Hickman and Charles
probably weren't anywhere near the other Hensleys there. Charles and
Hickman were in the western portion of Washington County that later became
Russell County.
Charles Hensley was listed on the 1785 tax list in
Washington Co., VA in Alexander Barnett's District. He had 1 tithe, 1
horse, 2 cattle and no slaves. Hickman had returned to North Carolina by this time.
In 1786 Russell County was formed from the northern and
western part of Washington County.
Charles Hensley was listed on the 1787 tax list in Russell
Co., VA with 1 tithe, 1 horse and 1 cow. He was listed in the Samuel
Ritchie's List of the "Lower District"
Charles was listed on the 1788 tax list in the same county
and district.
Charles was not listed on the 1789 or later tax lists in
Russell County so he must have moved away around that time or died.
There is a Charles Hensley listed on the 1789 and 1790 tax
lists in Nelson Co., VA (which later became Nelson Co., KY). He was listed
both times with 1 tithable. I don't know if this is the same Charles or
not, but it certainly seems likely.
That is the last record found for this Charles Hensley.
Unfortunately the 1790 and 1800 census are lost for Kentucky, so that is
no help.
The 1810 census shows no Charles Hensleys anywhere in the
United States.
Children of Charles Hensley.
Nothing is known of any possible children for Charles.
