Taliaferro Hensley (1770/75) and Diadamy Gorman (c1765) of Pittsylvania and Franklin Co, VA and Jefferson Co, TN

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to Taliaferro Hensley as far as I know.

Special thanks to J. B. Bruce for data shared on this family.

Taliaferro Hensley was born ca 1770/75 somewhere in Virginia. I don't know where, but he lived in Pittsylvania County later on, so perhaps born there as well. He was sometimes listed as "Toliver" or with other similar spellings.

I don't know who Taliaferro Hensley's parents were. He was in Pittsylvania Co, VA in 1799, so it is possible he is closely related to the older Hensleys who were in the county earlier. There was a John Hensley there early on, who did sell some land to Taliaferro in 1778, so that makes him a strong candidate to be his father. That John was old enough, but I don't have enough data yet to be sure he is his father. There was also a Benjamin Hensley in the county then, who could be his father instead.

The first record I have for Taliaferro was the aforementioned deed from John Hensley (both spelled Henslee) in 1778. I don't know how old Taliaferro would have been in 1778, but he could have still been a child, as there was no age requirement to purchase or receive land as a gift (but you had to be 21 or older to sell land). (Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed Book 5 page 77, shared by Laura Schreibman).

Taliaferro Hensley was not listed on the 1787 state census in Pittsylvania Co, VA (or elsewhere), so he was probably still home with parents. John and Benjamin Hensley were in Pittsylvania County that year.

The 1790 census for Virginia was lost.

On 21 Jan 1799, Taliaferro Hensley married Diadamy Gorman in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Diadamy was born ca 1764/65 (per 1850 census) or ca 1770/80 (per 1830 and 1840 census) in Virginia, county unknown. I don't know who her parents might have been.

The 1800 census was lost for Virginia, but I imagine that Taliaferro and family were in Pittsylvania County that year. J. B. Bruce stated that he was found in Franklin Co, VA on tax lists dated 1800 through 1805.

The 1810 census was lost for a large portion of Virginia, and since I didn't find Taliaferro Hensley listed anywhere that year, then I have to assume he was in one of the lost counties (of which Pittsylvania was one).

The 1820 census shows a "Toliver Hensley" in Grayson County (which is close by Pittsylvania), but I don't know if this is the same person or not. His listing showed one male age 26-44 (born ca 1775/94) and no females with him. However, if this was him, he should also have had at least one daughter and his wife with him. This could be him, and his apparent lack of additional family could easily be explained. Perhaps no one was home when the census taker came by, so they just put down one adult male, not knowing anything else about the family. However, based on additional evidence, it seems to Taliaferro and wife had separated by this time.

Analysis:
1 Male(s) 45+ (Bef 1775)	Taliaferro HENSLEY (1770/75)

The family was in Franklin County, Virginia by 1824 when one of their daughters (Lucy) married there.

It would seem that Taliaferro Hensley had moved over into Ashe County, North Carolina which borders Grayson County. I had this listing for sometime but did not realize it was the same person until J. B. Bruce pointed it out to me recently. He was apparently living all by himself in 1830.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Diadamy seems to be with daughter Lucy and husband Garland R. Brown in Jefferson Co, TN in 1830. They apparently moved there between ca 1827 and ca 1830 (based on birth dates and places of their children). Their 1830 census listing shows an older female who was roughly the right age to be Diadamy Gorman Hensley. Since she was with them in 1850, it seems reasonable that she was with them earlier as well. Even though the age in 1830 was off slightly from her 1850 age, it still seems likely that it is her.

1 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825)	Susan BROWN (1824/25) daughter
2 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Dolly BROWN (1825/26) daughter
					Sarah BROWN (1829/30) daughter

The fact that they moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee could be significant, as there were other Hensleys there before and after they got there, however, I've found no connection between any of the others and Taliaferro Hensley's family. It may just be a coincidence that they came there. They did not seem to live in the same part of the county either.

I did not find Taliaferro Hensley on the 1840 census.

Diadamy Gorman Hensley was still apparently home with her daughter Lucy's family for the 1840 census in Jefferson Co, TN.

Diadamy was still with her daughters family for the 1850 census in Jefferson County, Tennessee. This year there were several other Hensleys in Jefferson also, but none nearby, and no known relationship to her family. Check out Elizabeth Hensley (c1765), Elizabeth (Crow) Hensley (c1821), Robert Hensley (c1800) and Mary ---, Robert Hensley (c1815) and Mary A. --- and Sarah "Sally Hensley (c1812), all of whom seem related to each other, but not to Diadamy and family. Diadamy's age in 1850 ("85") doesn't agree with her 1830 and 1840 census entries, which indicate that she was somewhat younger than that.

I don't have Diadamy on the 1860 census, but the index shows "G. R. Brown" still in Jefferson Co, TN. ** I don't have this entry yet.

Children

Taliaferro Hensley and Diadamy Gorman probably had several children, but only one is known, a daughter Lucy (c1804) who Diadamy was residing with in 1830, 1840 and 1850. Her marriage record (1824) also proves she was a Hensley. Since her census records were given above already, I'll not give them their own section.
