My own Hensleys lived in Washington and Scott Co., VA and probably Buckingham County before that.
West Virginia was part of Virginia until 1863. Be sure to visit Hensleys of West Virginia also.

  • William Hensley (c1835 VA) here in 1880. Black / African American family. 1880 entry: Wm Hensley 45, black, laborer; Malinda 28 wife; Emma 12 dau; Paul 9 son; John 5 son; Mary 3 dau; Otice 7 son; Eva 1 dau. Not found in 1870.

Augusta County, VA [1738 from Orange, unorganized until 1745]

  • Adam Hensley (c1835 England) and wife Matilda (c1835 PA) and daughter Matilda (c1860 PA) listed here in 1870. No record of them before or after.
  • Jeremiah Hensley (c1806) and Susan (c1800) See: Samuel Hensley (d aft 1787) of VA (Bedford)
  • John A. Hensley (c1805) and Jane Bruce and Sarena Bishop of VA (Campbell, Pittsylvania, Scott)
  • Sallie Hensley (c1840) here in 1880 with Bradley Babcock family as servant. Single, servant. No record of her before or after.

  • John Hensley (1794/1804) and Lucy T. Napier. Married here 1818/19 listed here on 1820 census.

  • Bettie Hensley (c1865) here in 1880 with John F. Pool and wife Rosamond, listed as servant, house maid.
  • Eli Hensley (c1837) and Nancy Bray of VA (Grayson), KY (Owsley, Letcher)
  • Evaline Hensley (c1827) married Andrew Hash here on 17 Sep 1847. They are here for the 1850 census, not near any of the other Hensleys. I wasn't able to find them anywhere on the 1860 census.
  • James Hensley (c1843). Here on 1850 and 1860 census with William H. Smith (c1817), relationship unknown. Not found in 1870 or 1880.
  • Malinda Hensley (c1840) of VA (Grayson)
  • Martin Hensley (c1820), Nancy Lawrence and Catherine (---) of NC (Ashe); VA (Grayson), IA and NE
  • Mary "Polly" Hensley (c1795) of VA (Grayson)
  • Taliaferro Hensley and Diadamy Gorman (c1765) of VA (Pittsylvania, Franklin, Grayson) and TN (Jefferson)
  • From 1880 census, Wilson District: Milly Brown 46 head, Polly Hensly 19 dau, married (no spouse listed), Wm 18 son, Milly 17 dau divorced, Elizabeth 15 dau married, Cora 11/12 gr-dau, Clarisa 6/12 gr-dau. All born NC. No record of them before 1880 or after.

Halifax County, VA [1752 from Lunenburg]

  • Alexander Hensley (c1828) and Martha (---) of VA (Halifax, Patrick, Henry)
  • Ann Hensley (c1826) married Nathaniel Martin here 24 Apr 1848. They are here for 1850 census. She died ca 1859/60 and he is listed on 1860 census in Henry Co., VA and in Patrick Co., VA in 1870 and 1880.
  • Benjamin Hensley (c1730s) and Elizabeth --- of VA (Albemarle, Halifax, Bedford, Pittsylvania, Henry) and NC (Rowan, Surry, Burke, Buncombe, Yancey)
  • Charles Hensley (bef 1741-aft 1790) of VA (Halifax, Washington, Russell) and NC (Rowan, Surry) and KY (Nelson).
  • Charlotte Hensley (c1768 VA-aft 1870) living here in 1870. Black / African American family. Next door to Lewis and Catherine in 1870 (see below). 1870 census entry: Charlotte Hensley age 102, born Virginia. No one else in her household!
  • Lewis Hensley (c1810 VA) living here in 1870. Black / African American family. 1870: Lewis 60; Catherine 50; Catherine 12; Sydner (male) 6. Couldn't find them in 1880. Next door to Charlotte Hensley in 1870 (see above).
  • Lewis Hensley (c1810 VA) living here in 1870. Black / African American family. Could be duplicate of other Lewis but family members are different. Not listed near other Lewis or Charlotte but in same township. 1870: Lewis Hensley 60; Sallie 36; Bonapart 11; Lucinda 9.  Still in Halifax in 1880: Lewis Hencely 59; Sallie 40; Larinda 17; William 11.
  • Mary J. Hensley (c1830) married Flemming Jones here on 25 Sep 1848. Listed here on 1850 and 1860 census. She died 1860's, he married Lucy (---), still in Halifax for 1870 and 1880 census. In 1850 Alexander Hensley (c1822) was living with them, perhaps Mary's brother.
  • Martha M. Hensley (c1824) married George W. Hudson here on 16 Aug 1840. In Halifax in 1850, in Henry in 1860, in Patrick in 1870, in Rockingham Co., NC in 1880.
  • Nathan Hensley (c1770/75) and Martha McCraw and Jane Priddy of VA (Halifax, Henry)
  • William Hensley (c1804) and Martha Bomar and Jemima Frances Hopkins of VA (Halifax, Henry, Patrick)

Hanover County, VA [1720 from New Kent]

  • William J. Hensley listed on 1880 Mortality Schedule here, died May 1880, no age given. Occupation farmer. Died of consumption. Richmond. Must have been an adult to have an occupation listed. No Household number given. There were no Hensley households in Henrico or Richmond in 1880.

  • John Hinsley, Mariner died bef 9 Feb 1627 for on that date his Will was proven by the witnesses. No family known.

King George County, VA [1720 from Richmond, Westmoreland]

Lee County, VA [1792 from Russell]

  • M. F. L. Hensley (c1862 fem) and S. P. Hensley (c1865 male) here in 1880 with W. W. Fulkerson family. These are probably grandchildren of William Hensley (c1797) below. Mr. Fulkerson's sister Mariah was married to Sylvester Hensley, son of William. Sylvester died 1862 and Mariah in 1866.

  • N. Hensley (bride) and Dabney Key married here in 1812.  *
  • Samuel Hensley (bef 1765) listed here in 1810. This is probably Samuel Hensley (1750/60) who married Mary Leak and moved to Greenup Co., KY later to Pendleton Co., KY.

  • Lovey Hensley (c1801 VA-aft 1870). Listed here on the 1870 census with Henry Dalby family as Domestic servant age 69, mulatto. Not found in 1880.
