Dear Sirs:
     I will be deeply grateful if you will kindly give me all available
     family data contained in the pension application of Mrs. Mary
     Davis, widow of William Davis who enlisted in the War of the
     Revolution from Chesterfield County, Virginia. He died in Logan
     County, Kentucky.
          I am slo desirous of knowing if Lawrence Chapmen of Virginia, who
          served in the War of 1812, was penioned and, if so, would
     appreciate all family data as well as service.

     Know all Men by these presents that I William Davis of the County of Logan Kentucky
     ? affavit is my true and lawfull attorney Anthony Lawson of the same County and
     State of Virginia, do apply for in my name to the House ? of Treasury of the 
     United States for any pension or ? of pension that I may be entitled to by an
     Act of Congress passed on the 7th day of June 1832???pension?? and if necessary a
     ? any other ? at Washington? ?? at Logan Courthouse Va for ? I myself cause do and
     to do & act in all ? as fully as I myself could do in this pension so as to
     effect the object ?????& meaning of this Law. Given under my hand & Seal this 17th day of

          This day personally appeared before me Joseph Stratton one of the Commonwealth
          Justices of the peace for the County afresaid a William Davis who acknowledged
          the above power of Attorney to be his free will Act & done for the purposes therein
          mentioned. Given under my hand & Seal this 19th day of Sept 1832 Joseph Straton.

          Sir, I enclose to you as a Commissioner of Pensions, the power, from Wm Davis, a poor
          pensioner,to one, to draw ? pension for him I am prcourted drawing the amount ?,
          in conveyance of my name having been incorrectly writtn F.J instead of F.M. as it
          now appears altered in the power of Atty. I sent it back as directed y the Pension
          Agent Leon M Robison to have the proper alterations made So were made,but
          the alteration not notice and certified by a Magistrate,as is requires. It
          seems to me, as I am sure it will to you, to be a very small matter, and to save the
          poor man postage, I ask, that you will authorize the payment by the agent, as it

          Dear Madam: Reference is made to your request for information
          relative to William Davis (W.F.284), a Revolutionsary War Soldier
          who enlisted in Chesterfield County, Virginia and died in Logan
          County, Kentucky, leaving a widow, Mary and information
          relative to Lawrence Chapman of Virginia who served in the War of 1812.
               The War of 1812 records of this office fail to show a claim for pension
          on file on account of the services of a Lawrence Chapman.
               The data which follow were taken from papers on file in the pension
          claim, W. 284, based on the Revolutionary War service of William Davis.
               The date and place of birth of William Davis and the names of his
          parents are not shown.
               William Davis enlisted early in the Revolution at Chesterfield
          Court House in Virginia and served at various times until the close of
          the Revolution, amounting to over four and one half years in all, as
          private with the Virginia troops under Captains Madison and Fields and
          Colonels Davis (not shown whether  William was related to him) and Gaskins.
          William Davis was in the battle of Bunker Hill, in a skirmish at Piscatamay
          Swanps and in the siege of Yorktown.
               He was allowed pension on his application executed September 17,1832,
          at which time he was eighty-five years of age. He applied for pension in
          Logan County,Virginia, and stated that he then lived on the line of
          Logan County, Virginia."on the Kentucky side of said line but nearest to the
          Court House of Logan."
               William Davis died in Logan County, Virginia, Mary 13 or 23, 1842.
               He married in Floyd County, Kentucky, March 25, 1819, Mary Taylor
          of that county. She was born February 18, 1792.
               As the widow of William Davis, Mary Davis was allowed pension on her
          application executed June 21, 1852, while living in Logan County, Virginia.
          She was living there in 1865.
               There are no further data relative to family and it is not shown
          that William Davis ever lived in Logan County, Kentucky

          State of Kentucky Pike County, On this the 2nd day of October AD 1856
          personally appeared before me the undersigned an acting Justice of the peace
          in and for Said County Mary Davis aged Sixty three years this 18th of February
          last a resident of the County of Logan State of Virginia who being
          duly sworn acording to Law declared that She is the widow of William
          Davis Decd who was a pensioner of the United State under the Act of Congress
          granting pensions to solders for Revolutionary services and that he drew
          his pension upto the time of his death and as his widow She had
          Recd pension Certificate under the 3rd Section of the act of
          February 3rd 1853 for eighty dollars per anum dated the 19th day of September
          1853 for proof of her marriage with said William Davis his services-death
          & c The Refers to the proof, sworn file upon which her husband & herself was
          pensioned She states that she dont Recollect the precise time & date of her marriage with
          said William Davis but that she was married in the County of Floyd State of
          Kentucky by one Reuben Giddings or( Gideons) that her name before said
          marriage was Mary Taylor and that her said husband died in the County of
          Logan State of Virginia on the 23rd day of May 1842 as well as She now Recollects and
          that she is still a widow
          She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the County land
          which She may be entitled under the Act of Congress appeared the
          3rd March 1855. Mary X Davis

               These Shall license and permit you to joyn in marriage according to
          the rites and ceremonies of the Church to which you belong William Davis
          and Mary Taylor and for so doing this AShal be your Suffieient Warrant
          Given under my hand this 11th day of Fevruary 1819 Wm J.Mayo. CC

          the bond with Security in ? in My office according to law the day and year
          aforesaid Wm J.Mayo CC
          To Any Person legally authorized to Solomizing Matrimony
          Here follows a Copy of the bond above refered to which I in the Words
          and figures Know All Men by these Presnts that We William Davis Elijah Hensley
          are held and firmly bound with the commonwealth of Kentucky in the Penal
          Sum of Fifty pounds for the true pasquent ?, we bind ourselves our heirs
          firmly by these presents Sealed with our Seales and dated the 11th day
          of February 1819. The condition is such that, whereas there is a marriage
          Shortly intended to be had and Solomnized between the above bound
          William Davis and Mary Taylor of this County If therefore there Shall be
          no lawfull came to Obtract the Said Marriage then the Above obligation
          to be void ? to remain in full force and Virtue the day & date
          aforesaid. Wm. Davis Elijah Hensley
          In the presence of Wm J. Mayo CC
          Upon which Said Marriage licence appears tho the following Certificate
          of Marriage Towit
          I Reuben Giddins do ? Certify that the Within named Wm Davis & Mary
          Taylor were joined together in Matrimony by me on the Twenty fifth of
          March One thousand Eight hundrid and nineteen Given under my hand the day
          above. Reuben Giddens
          State of Kentucly Floyd County
              I James Fain ? Clerk of the County Court forsaid County do hereby
          certify that the above is a true copy of the marriage bond, marriage
          licence& Certificate as of Record in my office with the exception of
          the State of the Marriage Certificate.

          Ata county Court held for Logan County at the courthouse on the 17
          September 1832
               William Davis this day made his declaration in order to obtain
          the pro? of the act of Congress passed the 7th June 1832 proves
          ? four Soldier of the revolution which was duly Served and Subscribed
          under open court. And the said court do hereby declare their opinion
          that the above applicant was a revolutionary soldier as he states
          which was ordained to be certified according to said act of Congress.

          State of Virginia Logan County
          On this 17th day of September 1832 personally appeared before the Court
          of Logan County. William Davis, now living on the line of this County
          on the Kentucky Side of said line but nearest the Courthouse of Logan
          ??? Who being first duly sworn according to Law Doth hereby make the
          following Declarations in order to obtain the benefits of the? by the Act
          of Congress passed on the 7th of June 1832 That he enlisted with the
          timing of the Harbor Station about the commonwealth of the time of the
          Revolution and previous to the landing of Genl Gage at Boston. He
          served in the Company of Capt Maddison in the 9th Va Regiments which
          Regt with the Command is by Col. Davis. He Joined the Main Army Commanded
          by GEnl.Wayne ? Morgan at Cherfield Cot.house in Va and marched
          to Petersberg. Shortly after Capt Maddison was & a Capt Fields appointed
          to Command the Company on whose Company he continued during the
          period of his enlistments which was for 3 years & was discharged at
          Manchester Shortly after he was drafted for 18 months and served in
          the Va Regt commanded by Col. Gaskins and under the Command of Genl Morgan
          was with the Army at the Skirmish in the Piscamay ? was at the battle of
          Bunker hill, after his time of Service about for the 18 months He again
          enlisted under Col. Gaskins the Captian name forgotten and continued
          with the army late and fortunate condlusion of the War at the Seige
          of York, where he? as to releases under Genl Wayne, but being ?
          poor of memory may have ? He never ? any pension nor has he get ? his
          Land bounty- Sworn to and ? the day and ? aforesaid. William Davis

          At a County Court Continued and held at the Courthouse of Logan County
          for said County on Tuesday the 21st day of June 1853. The following
          order was made,
          "Satisfactory evidence was this day produced to the Court that William
          Davis a pensioner of the United States at the rate of Eighty Dollars per
          year for services in the Revolutionary War was a resident of this County,
          and that he died in this County on the 23rd day of May 1842 that he left
          a widow named Mary and it is ordered to be Certified to the Commissioner
          of Pensions that the declaration of the said Widow claiming a
          Continuance of Pension under a subsequent act of Congress together with the
          record evidence of the Marriage of said William Davis and Mary Davis
          were read in open Court and that the said Mary Davis was sworn to the truth
          of her said declaration by Henry Farley Presiding Justice of this County
          in open Court. Copy Test.Wm Straton Clk.

          State of Virginia County of Logan
               On this 21 day of June AD 1853 personally appears ? a Justice of the
          Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid Mary Davis a
          resident of the County of Logan aged 65 years and Personally well known to
          me who being duly sworn according to daw, declares that she is the widow
          of William Davis deceased who was a Private soldier in the Company
          Commanded by Captain Lamb in the Regiment of Regulars Commanded by ______
          in the Revolutionary War. That her said husband was drafted or enlisted
          and was honorably discharged. She further states that she was married to
          the said William Davis in the County of Floyd State of Kentucky on the
          25th day of March 1819 by one Reuben Giddins a Justice of the Peace and
          that her name before her said Marriage was Mary Taylor and her said
          husband died in the said County of Logan on the 23rd day of May 1842 That
          She has remained a widow ever since and is still a widow. She has never
          before made application for a Pension. But the said William Davis was a
          Pensioner in his lifetime for several years before his death. She
          thinks he drew $80 a year.
