> William Hensley
The author (Marty Grant) is not related to William Hensley
as far as can be proven. He did live in the same counties (Washington and
Scott Co.,
VA) as my ancestor Larkin
Hensley (c1761-1806).
Special Thanks to Ruthe Muench and Laura Schreibman for information shared on
this family.
William Hensley was born ca 1796/97 per his age of
63
on the 1860 census and 73 on the 1870 census. This differs somewhat from
his 1850 entry of 50 (born ca 1799/1800).
He was born in Virginia per the same sources (1850, 1860
and 1870 census.) He may have been born in Washington County perhaps in
the part of Washington that later became Scott County (where he lived for
many years.)
I have not been able to determine who William's parents
were. Researchers going back several decades thought he might be a son of
Fielding Hensley (c1761), but
the evidence is lacking. I've found nothing to prove they are closely
related other than them living in the same general area.
William Hensley would have been about 15 years old by the
time of the 1810 census (earlier census records are lost for Virginia.)
There were only three Hensley households in Washington County at that
time: Samuel Hensley (1754),
William Hensley (1765/84)
and Fielding Hensley (1761).
Samuel had no young sons with him (his family is well documented anyway,
and John is not his son). William Hensley had two boys aged 10-15 (born ca
1794/1800). One of those could easily be William Hensley (1795). Fielding
Hensley had one son in that same age group. That could be William. There is no way to know who these boys were based only on census analysis,
but assuming that William was in the area at the time, that means that either
William or Fielding are the most likely fathers for him.
William Hensley would have turned 16 around 1813 or so but
he did not appear on the personal property tax lists until 1824 when he
was about 27 years old. This may indicate that he was not native to Scott
Co., VA and that he moved there from somewhere else. Either that or he had
left the area and later returned. Either is possible.
For the 1820 census, William would have been about 23
years old, which is old enough to be a head of household, but he was not
listed in the Washington or Scott Co., VA census for that year. There were
several Hensley households in Scott County that year but only one with a
male aged 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804).
Fielding Hensley (c1761) had
one son that age, but that is probably his proven son Nathaniel (1800). Of
course it is impossible to know who was who on this particular census.
(John Hensley and James Hensley were both listed with one male each that
age, but that was themselves in each case.)
William Hensley was listed on the 1824 tax list in Scott
Co., VA with one white male over 16 (himself of course). He had no horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1825 tax list in Scott
Co., VA with one white male over 16.
William Hensley was listed on the 1826 tax list in Scott
Co., VA with one white male over 16.
William was not listed on the 1827 tax list in
Scott County.
On 25 Feb 1827 William Hensley married Elizabeth Magee
in Scott Co., VA. They were married by Edward T. Perry.
Elizabeth Magee (or McGee) was born ca 1798/99 per age of 51 in 1850; or ca
1793/94 per age of 66 in 1860; or ca 1796/97 per age of 73 in 1870. All
records agree that she was born in Virginia. I have it listed that she is
a child of Samuel Magee, but I have no evidence for that. It may be
incorrect. That probably makes her a sister to Jane Magee wife of
Zachariah Hensley (c1794).
For the 1810 census there was an Auston McGee and a William McGee in
Washington Co., VA. Neither of them had apparent daughters at home in
1810. The 1820 census shows Augustine McGee, John McGee, Thompson McGee
and Wyatt McGee in Washington Co., VA (and several McKees). There was a
Samuel Magee Sr (bef 1775) and a Celia Magee (1775/94) in Scott Co., VA in
1820. This Samuel may be the father of Elizabeth and Jane. He did have a
daughter age 16-25 (1794/1804) with him. That could be Elizabeth (c1790s).
More research is needed to prove her parents.
William Hensley was listed on the 1828 Scott County tax list
with 1 white male
over 16, and 2 horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1829 Scott County tax list
with 1 white male
over 16, and 2 horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1830 Scott County tax list
with 1 white male
over 16, and 3 horses.
William Hensley was listed on
the 1830 census in Scott Co., VA. Unfortunately, this census was
alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were. Strangely William
was listed alone. The most likely explanation is that the census taker
found his house empty and didn't know how to enumerate his household so
just put William's age or an estimate thereof. On the other hand perhaps
William was living alone at the time.

William was not listed on the 1831 Scott County tax
list.
William Hensley was listed on the 1832 Scott County tax list
with 1 white male
over 16, and 1 horse.
William Hensley was listed on the list of Washington Co., VA
Militiamen for 1832. I assume this is the same William, though in the
neighboring county.
William Hensley was listed on the 1833 Scott County tax list
with 1 white male
over 16, and 2 horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1834 Scott County tax list
with no white males over 16, and 1 horse. This could be an error,
or perhaps William wasn't living in the county at the time though he still
had personal property there.
William Hensley was listed on the 1835 Scott County tax list
1 white male
over 16, and no horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1836 Scott County tax list
1 white male
over 16, and 3 horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1837 Scott County tax list
1 white male
over 16, and 3 horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1838 Scott County tax list
1 white male
over 16, and 3 horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1839 Scott County tax list
1 white male
over 16, and 4 horses.
William Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Scott Co., VA.
No other Hensleys were listed nearby. He had two males aged 40-49 in the
household, one being himself. Who was the other one?

William Hensley and family
were listed on the 1850 census in Lee Co., VA which is next to Scott
County on the west. Samuel McGee (c1787) was living with them. There was a
ditto mark after his name (written as Samuel McGee ") which makes
you think his name was Samuel McGee Hensley, but I doubt that is the case.
He is probably an older brother or uncle to Elizabeth. I didn't find
Samuel on the 1840 census, so perhaps he was the "extra" male with William
Hensley that year, though his enumerations there don't match a birth of ca
1787.

They moved to Buchanan Co., MO during the 1850's and were
listed there on the 1860 census. I don't know what drew them to that
county. They were the only Hensleys there at the time. There had been some
there back in 1850 but they were gone by 1860. (See family of
Henry Hensley (c1808 KY)).
William's son Sylvester
Hensley was still in Lee Co., VA in 1860. That census record listed his
birth place as Scott Co., VA.

I couldn't find William or Elizabeth on the 1880 census.
Their sons Robert and Andrew were still in Buchanan Co., MO for that
census.
Children of William and Elizabeth (Magee) Hensley.
They had four children per the 1850 census. The other census records do
not seem to suggest there were more.
