Alexander Hensley and John L. Hensley family of Cabell Co, VA (WV)I (Marty Grant) am not related to the Alexander and John L. Hensley family as far as I know, but I am very interested in them though. Alexander Hensley and John L. Hensley seem to be brothers, as they were residing together on the 1850 census. I don't know who their parents may have been. There seems to be an abundance of circumstantial evidence suggesting they are sons of old Solomon Hensley. Alexander Hensley was born ca 1817/18 in VA, perhaps in Wayne or Cabell County, VA (later became West Virginia). John L. Hensley was born ca 1826/27 in VA, probably in the same place as Alexander. Alexander Hensley was listed on the 1840 census in Cabell Co, VA, apparently living alone. He was on the same page as Solomon Hensley, who could easily be his father (no proof of that though). Alexander's household did not include anyone else, so his brother John was not with him then, perhaps he was still home with their parents. Samuel Hensley was also nearby, and he could be their father instead. He had a known son named John though, clearly different from the John connected with Alexander. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1840 Cabell Co, VA pg 36 Alexander Hinsley 0000100000000-0000000000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Alexander HENSLEY (1817/18) s/o ? In 1842, Wayne County was created the western part of Cabell County, and Alexander and some of the other Hensley's fell into the new county. Alexander Hensley was listed on the 1850 census in Wayne Co, VA. John L. Hensley age 23 and his (John's) wife Susan were residing with him. I've assumed they are brothers, but they could be Uncle-Nephew, or cousins instead. I don't have these actual census records yet but the information is published in Hensley Households by Laura Schreibman. Patrick Hensley was on the same page with Alexander and John in 1850. He may be their brother also. Solomon Hensley was also on that page, so that makes him a strong candidate to be their father. Alexander Hensley apparently married ca 1855 in Wayne Co, VA to Mary A. ---. I don't know what her maiden name might have been. For the 1860 census, Alexander Hensley and wife Mary were still in Wayne Co, VA. Solomon Hensley's widow Elizabeth was just a few pages away. John L. Hensley and his wife Susan were in Cabell Co, VA for the 1860 census. They were on the same page with the Samuel Hensley and Parthenia family. Samuel is thought to be a son of Solomon Hensley, so this makes sense if John and Alexander are sons of old Solomon. I didn't find Alexander Hensley and family on the 1870 census. John L. Hensley and family were still in Cabell County (now West Virginia) for the 1870 census. John's wife Susan died sometime prior to 1870, for by then he had a new wife named Catherine ---. They were listed on the same page as Ichabod "Bird" Hensley, thought to be a son of Solomon Hensley. Samuel Hensley (also a son of Solomon) was on the same page. ChildrenBoth Alexander and John L. Hensley had several children. See the Register Report for more on their families. Researcher ListPersons researching this family (click here for data on how to get on or off of this list):
