Henry Hobson (bef 1765) and Fairlise Braddy of Duplin, Wayne Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Henry Hobson and Fairlise Braddy.

Henry Hobson was born before 1765 per 1810 census. I don’t know where he was born, and the first record I found for him was dated 1801 in Duplin County, North Carolina. I don’t think he was born in Duplin County though for he would have been at least 36 years old by then (1801), so where was he before appearing in Duplin?

I don’t know who Henry Hobson’s parents may have been, nor do I have any suspects, especially since I don’t know where he originated. There were Hobsons and Hopsons (a common alternate spelling) in various Eastern North Carolina counties in the 1700's. There were also several in Eastern Virginia. There were also some families named "Hopton", which may or may not be an alternative version of the same name. I only mention that name since some were nearby in eastern North Carolina as well.

There was either one man or several men named "Francis Hobson/Hopson" who appeared throughout several counties in the early 1700's: Chowan-1717, 1721; Beaufort-1755; Tyrrell-1755; Bertie-1757; Pitt-1762, 1764. These could be different men, but it could be one man getting around through the years. I don’t know if there is any connection between him/them and Henry Hobson, but certainly could be.

There was also a Henrietta Hopson in Halifax Co, NC in 1786, and a Jenny Hobson in Jones Co, NC in 1787.

The 1790 census shows many Hobson/Hopson families in North Carolina, including a large group in Chatham County and a large group in Wake County. There was a Horotia Hobson in Onslow County, and a Charles Hopton in Wayne County.

In 1790, Henry Hobson would have been at least 25 years old, perhaps much older. There was no "Henry" listed on the 1790 census in North Carolina. If he was home with his parents, he would have been listed in the 16 and up category (born before 1774). Several of the Hobson entries throughout the state had an "extra" male that age, including Charles, Stephen, and William Hobson Sr in Chatham County; Francis and Thomas Hobson in Wake County, and Charles Hopton in Wayne County.

The Charles Hopton family has always interested me, considering the name is so similar, and he did live in Wayne County, yet somehow I don’t believe he is related to Henry Hobson at all. I could be wrong, and he should still be considered a possible suspect.

By the time of the 1800 census, Henry Hobson would have been at least 35 years old, or older. There was a Henry Hobson listed that year in Rutherford County, NC. He was a good age match with my Henry, but I have no way of knowing yet if it is the same person. Rutherford is all the way in the western part of the state, quite a few miles from Wayne County.

Assuming that the Rutherford County Henry isn’t the same one, our Henry would have probably been living with another family, enumerated in the 26-44 age group (born ca 1755/74). Many of the 1800 census Hobsons had one male that age, but in most cases we can assume it was the head of household, and not an "extra" person in the household, such as our Henry. There were a couple that had a male that age who did not seem to be the head of household, including Charles Hobson in Chatham Co, NC and John Hopson in Surry County.

By 1801, our Henry Hobson was in Duplin County, North Carolina.

On 23 Mar 1801, Court, Henry Hobson and Shadrack Stallings witnessed an Article of Agreement between Robert Merrit Sr and Joshua Blake dated 23 Mar 1801. This was proven in July 1801 Court. (From Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1798-1803 Part 5 by Leora H. McEachern, 1982)

On 15 Oct 1801, Henrey Hobson obtained a marriage bond in Duplin County to marry Fairlise Ayers. William Taylor was bondsman. Fairlise Braddy was born 1770/75, and apparently was previously married to a Mr. Ayers. See the Stephen Braddy page for more on Fairlise Braddy. I don’t know for sure that Stephen is her father, but he is the only suspect I currently have.

On 20 Oct 1802, in Duplin County Court, Jacob Monk was charged "with begeting a bastard child of Fairlise Braddy (now Hobson)". The names used here in this record would seem to suggest that Fairlise had this child before her marriage to Mr. Ayers, and before her marriage to Henry Hobson, though the court record recognizes that she was now a Hobson, but previously a Braddy. (From Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1798-1803 Part 5 by Leora H. McEachern, 1982)

On 20 Jul 1803, in Duplin County Court, the Sheriff (Hugh McCanne, Esquire) returned a list of Insolvents (those who didn’t pay their taxes) for the year 1802. Henry Hobson was listed as having been taxed for 1 Poll, and apparently he didn’t pay.

I think that Henry Hobson and family moved into neighboring Wayne County around 1802-1803, settling somewhere in the southern part of the county in present day Indian Springs Township. I have not found any deeds for the Hobsons, so I can’t pinpoint it any better than that.

On 22 Dec 1809, Henry Hobson, William Lawhorn, and Polly Lawhorn witnessed the Will of James Parker in Wayne County, NC.

Henry Hobson was listed on the 1810 census in Wayne County. He was listed between the households of Phereby Wilson and Micajah (Michael) Grant.

On 22 May 1811, Henry Hobson, Charles Lawhorn, Shadrack Daniel and Thomas Grant witnessed a deed from Michael Grant** to his daughter Polly Grant. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 370).

On 8 Feb 1812, Henry Hobson and Kizziah McKinne witnessed a deed from Michael Grant to Barnabas McKinne. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 9 page 380).

On 9 Jul 1813, Henry Hobson and John Lawhon (Lawhorn) witnessed the Will of Sally Lawhon in Wayne County.

On 14 Sep 1813, Henry Hobson and James Daniel witnessed the Will of William Lawhon in Wayne County.

The above is the last record I’ve found for Henry Hobson. He may have died between 1813 and 1820, for I did not find him listed on the 1820 census anywhere.

I could not find Fairlise on the 1820 census.

She was listed as head of household on the 1830 census in Wayne County. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can’t tell who her neighbors were, nor where she was living at the time. She was listed as "Pheriby Hobston", but I’m pretty sure that is just a mangled "Fairlise Hobson".

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Daughter?

Fairlise was not listed on the 1840 census, but I think she was at home with her son William Hobson, for he had a female age 70-79 (born ca 1760/70) with him that year. This could be her, or it could be someone else instead.

Fairlise was not listed on the 1850 census as far as I could find, so I’d imagine she had died by then.

Children

Henry Hobson and Fairlise Ayers apparently had several children, none completely proven as far as I know. However, since they were the only Hobson family around, it seems likely they are the parents of Mary, Rebecca and William Hobson, who all were there near them at one time or another. Fairlise had a child out of wedlock with Jacob Monk, born sometime prior to 1802 (probably before her 1801 marriage to Henry Hobson). This child is not known, but since she was a Braddy at the time of the birth, I suspect the child would have had the Braddy surname (as the law required). Fairlise may also have had another child prior to her marriage to Henry Hobson, based on the 1810 census record.

Unknown Son (1794/1800). Henry Hobson had a male this age with him for the 1810 census. Since this child pre-dates his 1801 marriage I highly suspect this is either his son by a previous wife (if there was one) or it is Fairlise's child. I once thought this might be Henry W. Ayer of Cumberland Co, NC, but I've since found evidence to spoil that theory (namely his Will dated 1839 in Cumberland Co, NC naming various relatives). He may still be related to her though, for he did act as Bondsman for the marriage of William Hobson in 1837, but that could just be a coincidence.

Unknown Daughter (1794/1800). Henry Hobson had a female this age with him for the 1810 census. Since this child pre-dates his 1801 marriage I highly suspect this is either his daughter by a previous wife (if there was one) or it is Fairlise's child. This could be the child born out of wedlock mentioned in the 1802 Duplin County Court record (a child of Jacob Monk).

I have no record of who this daughter could be. She was not with Fairlise for the 1830 census, so probably married or dead by then.

Mary Hobson is probably a child of Henry Hobson and Fairlise Braddy. The first record I found for her was her 1818 marriage in Duplin County to Isaac Blizzard. Since there were no other Hobsons in the area then, it seems that Henry Hobson is the only choice for her father.

If she is the same Mary that is listed on the 1850 census in Smythe Co, VA, then she was born ca 1802/03 in North Carolina, and her full name was "Mary Jane".

Henry Hobson had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10).

On 30 Dec 1818, Isaac Blizzard obtained a marriage bond in Duplin County to marry Mary Hobson. Aaron Newell was bondsman.

After their marriage they promptly disappeared from the public record (as far as I can find). I did not find them on the 1820 or 1830 census. I did find one in 1840 Guilford Co, NC, but I had no way to know if it is the same family or not but it sure seems likely.

A few years ago, another researcher (Wayne Blizzard) told me that he thought this Isaac (in Guilford) was the same one, for his wife was named "Mary" and the children's ages matched up well with a couple marrying in 1818.

I don't know where they were living for the 1820 and 1830 census, for they were not listed in Guilford County those years. Their children who were born in the 1820's were all born in NC (per the 1850 census). The 1820 census entry for John Blizzard in Guilford has room for Isaac and his family also, so perhaps that is his brother and they were all together that year.

They were in Guilford for the 1840 census. Other Blizzards had been there earlier on, and were probably closely related to him.

1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840)	Mary J. BLIZZARD (1835/36) daughter

In the mid or late 1840's, the Isaac Blizzard family moved to Smythe County, Virginia and were listed there on the 1850 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I don't know for sure that Isaac and Mary of Guilford Co, NC and Smythe Co, VA are the same Isaac and Mary of Duplin Co, NC, but it sure seems that way. More research is needed on this family.

Rebecca Hobson was born ca 1807/08 (per 1850 census) in Wayne Co, NC (per 1850 census). I have no direct proof that Rebecca was a daughter of Henry Hobson but he seems the only choice, and he did have a daughter her age, and her family (after marriage) and the Henry Hobson family were neighbors.

Rebecca seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I don't have her parents on the 1820 census yet.

Rebecca married Richard Roberts in the 1820's, before ca 1826 in Wayne County. They lived out their lives in Indian Springs Township, her dying there in the 1860's, and he in the 1870's. See their own page for more information.

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Henry Hobson had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and Fairlise had someone her age with her still in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10).

I have no data on who this might be.

William Hobson was born ca 1812/13 (per 1850 census) in Wayne Co, NC (per 1850 census). I have no direct proof that he is Henry's son, but there seems no other choice.

I have no record of William's parents on the 1820 census yet.

William was apparently home with his widowed mother for the 1830 census (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15). He may also be listed with his supposed half-brother Henry W. Ayer that year in Cumberland Co, NC (same age group).

On 4 May 1837, William Hobson obtained a marriage bond in Cumberland County, NC to marry Nancy Taylor. Henry W. Ayer (related?) was the bondsman. Nancy Jane Taylor was born ca 1819/20 in NC, possibly Cumberland County, or perhaps Wayne County. I don't know who her parents are.

They were back in Wayne County for the 1840 census. They were listed next door to brother-in-law Richard Roberts (c1790). An older woman (born ca 1760/70) was living with them. This is either his widowed mother Fairlise, or perhaps it is Nancy's mother.

They were still in Wayne County for the 1850 census, and still next door to brother-in-law Richard Roberts.

I did not find William nor Nancy on the 1870 census, but I did find several of their children still in Cumberland County, so it seems likely that they died there in the 1860's, though they could have moved away somewhere instead.

Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Fairlise Hobson had an apparent daughter this age with her for the 1830 census (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).

I have no data on who this might be.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Fairlise Hobson had an apparent daughter this age with her for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). She could be a granddaughter instead of a daughter.

I have no data on who this might be.
