My James FamilyWilliam James (d before 1799) and Elizabeth --- (bef 1755-after 1810) of SC (Marion County) Introduction - A History of my research on this family My James Family - Data on my James ancestors IntroductionMy Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell) first told me about my James ancestors. She said that her grandfather Daniel Turner was married to Laura Virginia James. Virginia's parents were Pinkney and Sophie James. They were all buried near each other at the McMillan Cemetery, just east of Mullins, in Marion County, SC. When I began researching this family, I found Pinkney and Sophie James on the 1850 and 1860 census, but not on the 1870 census, but they were back for the 1880 census. I found him on the 1900 census in Reaves Township with a 2nd wife named "Sarah". Aunt Dot didn't remember him being married twice, but he did die about 20 years before she was born. The various census records showed Pinkney living close to various other James families, though I hadn't found any primary evidence linking them together. I back tracked him to the 1840 census, which is the earliest record I've found for him. I've found no primary evidence identifying his parents. The 1830 census showed several households with a male his age (in the 10-14 category, or born ca 1815/20), including: Edwin James, William James, James James, and Rody James. I suspected that one of these was his family. Backing up to the 1820 census, there were only two James families listed in Marion, and both had sons under 10 (born ca 1810/20), and they were James James and Thomas James (who's widow Rhoda was on the 1830 census). So that, in my opinion, narrowed it down to two candidates: James and Thomas. Recently cousin Terry Britt told me that James James was the father of Pinkney James. I haven't yet discussed this with her to find out what proof there is of it, but it sounds reasonable, and I think it is correct. James James is a proven son of William James who died before 1799. From what I've found, there were many James families in the old "Welch Neck" settlement, who may have came down from Maryland or direct from Wales in the 1730's. I don't know if my James family is part of that family or not, but it seems likely. So, I'd like to give a special "thank you" to my Great Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell 1927-1994) for their help on this family. I'd also like to thank Cousin-in-law Terry Britt for data she has shared with me recently. My James ancestorsMy earliest known ancestor William James was probably born before 1755 in SC, presumably in the area that is now Marion County, or perhaps in what is now Williamsburg County. He died prior to 1799 in Marion District, SC. There are deed records showing the heirs of William James selling some of his land, those heirs including James James, three sisters and Elizabeth, their mother. James James was born ca 1774/84. He died sometime after the 1830 census. I don't know his wife's name yet. Pinkney J. James was born in 1816 and lived in the area near Mullins, in Reaves Township. He married Sophie J. --- ca 1838. I have no clues as to her maiden name yet. Laura Virginia James (1840-1914) married Daniel J. Turner (1846-1915) ca 1868 in the Mullins area. I have set up several web pages, each containing documentation, for different branches of this family. Follow the links below for more information.
