My Jenkins Family

Osborne Jenkins (c1803-1856) and Ann --- (c1804-1862) of NC (Onslow County)

Introduction - A History of my research on this family

My Jenkins Family - Data on my Jenkins ancestors

Introduction

I discovered my Jenkins connection after working on my Watson line for awhile. I knew my ancestor William H. Watson was a son of Joseph and Sarah Watson, based on his 1882 marriage (in Columbus Co, NC) to Mary C. Davis. He was born March 1852, and I finally found his parents in Onslow County, NC.

I found Joseph and Sarah's marriage bond in Onslow Co, NC dated 28 Jan 1851, between "Joseph Watson" and "Sarah Jinkins". This was my first clue that she was a Jenkins.

I checked the 1850 Onslow Co, NC census to try and find Sarah. I suspected (and hoped) she would still be home with her parents then. The 1850 census only showed one Sarah Jenkins (that made it easy!) and she was age 19 and living with her parents Ousza Jenkins, age 47 and Amy Jenkins age 46. "Amy" was actually "Ann".

I found Sarah Jenkins Watson on the 1860 census in Onslow Co, NC, widowed, living with her mother Ann, also widowed. Her mother was listed as Ann Jenkins age 50 and Sarah was S.J. Watson age 30 with her son William H. Watson age 8 there with her.

I later found the Estate records of "Osborne" Jenkins (who's name varied from record to record, for example: Uzza, Auza, Osborne, etc). Osborne died in February 1856, and I found his estate records on file at the NC Archives in Raleigh, NC. One paper dated September 1856 named his death date as "Feb 1856" and listed his heirs, including his daughter "Sarah Parker". Another paper dated 4 Jun 1857 also named heirs, this time she was listed as "Sarah Packer". At first this had me concerned about whether I had the right family, but other than that last name, everything else was a perfect match. The 1860 census shows her as "S.J. Watson", just as she should be.

The widow Sarah Jenkins Watson remarried in 1862, on 14 September to George H. Jenkins (probably a cousin). Sarah's mother Ann --- Jenkins died on 20 May 1862, and in her estate papers (also at NC Archives), one document dated June 1863 lists her heirs, including daughter "Sarah Jenkins".

So I was positive I had the right parents for my Sarah Jenkins Watson, in spite of the "Parker" and "Packer" surnames used in her father's estate papers (I still don't know how to explain that).

So the next step was to back track Osborne Jenkins, and find his parents and find out the maiden name of his wife Ann.

I checked the 1840 Onslow Co, NC census and found "Ausborn" Jenkins listed.

I checked the 1830 census and found "Ozen" Jenkins listed.

He wasn't on the 1820 census, so he probably married in the 1820-1830 timeframe. Their oldest known child was born ca 1828/29, so the probably married close to then. I checked the Onslow County marriage records, and didn't find one for them.

I didn't find any deed records for Osborne Jenkins, but the 1850 census showed him with $300 real estate, so he must have inherited land or got it in some way I haven't found yet.

I still have no real evidence who his parents might be, nor the maiden name of his wife Ann. I suspect that Osborne may be a son of Lewis Jenkins and Sarah Beasley who married in 1794. I have no solid proof of that so far, but they are my prime suspects. They are certainly somehow connected to the Onslow County Jenkins patriarch families of Lewis Jenkins (c1710) and Isabella ---, Thomas Jenkins (c1716) and Margaret ---, William Jenkins (c1732) and Elizabeth Henderson and George Jenkins (c1733) and Sarah Erickson. These four seem to be the ancestors of all the subsequent Onslow County Jenkins families, so Osborne must go back to one of them.

More work needs to be done on this family, but I'm convinced the answers are in Onslow County, NC.

My Jenkins ancestors

My earliest known ancestor Osborne (aka Uzza, Ausza, etc) Jenkins was born ca 1802/03 in Onslow County, NC, probably in Stump Sound Township. His parents aren't yet known. He married Ann --- ca 1820/1829 in Onslow Co, NC. He was listed on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census in Onslow Co, NC. He died in 1856. His widow Ann was listed on the 1860 census, and she died in 1862. Both left estate record naming their heirs.

Osborne and Ann's daughter Sarah Jenkins was born ca 1830/31 in Onslow Co ,NC. She married Joseph Watson in 1851. He died shortly afterwards. They had one child born in 1852. She was listed with her widowed mother Ann on the 1860 census. Sarah married a 2nd time in 1862 to George H. Jenkins, a cousin no doubt. I have no further record of her.

I have set up several web pages, each containing documentation, for different branches of this family. Follow the links below for more information.
