Mary Jenkins (c1800 of Onslow Co, NC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Mary Jenkins, but I'm sure she is somehow related to my ancestor Osborne Jenkins (c1803). First things first, I do not know if Mary Jenkins is a Jenkins by birth or if she was married to a Mr. Jenkins who died prior to 1850. She had people with her on her two census entries (1850 and 1870), but they were not Jenkins, so their relationship to her is unknown. Mary Jenkins was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 census), presumably in Onslow County. Like I mentioned above, I don't know if she was a Jenkins by birth or not. Assuming she was a Jenkins by birth, she would have been about 9 or 10 for the 1810 census, so should be enumerated in either the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10) or in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1794/1800). John Jenkins (1770/74) had an apparent daughter that age in 1810, as did Lewis Jenkins (1770/74). James Jenkins (c1780) had two girls 10-15, and two under 10. James is not her father, for he did not name her in his 1851 Will, but that does not mean he wasn't her older brother, or somehow related to her. For the 1820 census, Mary would have been about 19 or 20, so she should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). None of the Jenkins households in 1820 had a female this age living with them. For the 1830 census, Mary would have been about 29 or 30 years old, so she should be enumerated in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1800/10) or in the 30-39 group (born ca 1790/1800). James Jenkins (c1780) had a 20-29 year old girl. Lear Jenkins (1770/80) had a 20-29 year old girl with her in 1830. For the 1840 census, Mary would have been about 39 or 40 years old, so she should be enumerated in the 30-39 or 40-49 age group. The apparent wife of Benjamin Jenkins (c1798) was in the 30-39 age category. Benjamin Jenkins (c1819) had a female aged 40-49 with him. If Mary was married to a Mr. Jenkins, he apparently died before 1850, for she was head of household in 1850 with two Gillikins residing with her. She was two houses from George W. Jenkins (c1816) son of James Jenkins (c1780). The two Gillikins could be Mary's children if she was married to a Gillikin who died ca 1841 or so, and then she married a Mr. Jenkins after that, but he died before 1850. Either that or they are not her children.

Mary was listed on the 1870 census in Stump Sound Township next door to Murphy Jenkins, son of George W. Jenkins (c1816). Mary had a young Mary Reece living with her. This census shows that Mary Jenkins owned real estate, so perhaps some deed records can be found that will help identify her.
