Samuel Johnson (bef 1755-c1811) and Mary --- of SC (Marion County)
Introduction - A History of my research on this family
My Johnson Family - Data on my Johnson ancestors
My Great Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell) gave me a pretty good outline of my Campbell ancestry when I was first getting started with family history. She told me about how my Great Great Grandfather Spencer A. Campbell (1852-1928) was married to Celia Johnson. She had no additional data on the Johnson family, but this got me started.
Later, at a family reunion, I asked my Great Uncle Ira Campbell about the family. When I got to Spencer and Celia, he said something like "you know Spencer and Celia were first cousins". I didn't know that, and he explained that Celia's mother was a Campbell. By then, I had already found that Celia's parents were Carey and Ara Johnson (based on the 1860 census). This meant that Ara was a Campbell, and a sister of Ebenezer Campbell (Spencer's father).
I traced Carey Johnson back to his parents Benjamin and Mary Johnson, based on Benjamin's estate records, which showed Carey was his son. Carey was also mentioned by W. W. Sellers in his book on Marion County History (1901), but no details were given as to his parents or children.
I traced Benjamin back to his parents Samuel and Mary Johnson based on deed records where he and the other heirs of Samuel were dividing his land.
Samuel Johnson was born before 1755, and I have not yet gotten back beyond him. With such a common name as "Samuel Johnson", I may never be able to go beyond him.
Both Samuel and his son Benjamin had wives named "Mary", and in both cases, I have not been able to determine their maiden names, even after 20 years of research. Perhaps the answer is hidden in Marion County records, but so far I haven't found it.
My earliest known ancestor was Samuel Johnson, born before 1755, perhaps in South Carolina, perhaps elsewhere. He and wife Mary were in Marion County, SC area before 1786. Samuel died sometime after 1811, and Mary died sometime after 1813. They lived in and around the Temperance Hill area.
Samuel and Mary were parents of at least 10 children, including Benjamin Johnson born ca 1775/84. Benjamin married Mary --- sometime ca 1809 in Marion Dist, SC. Benjamin died in Marion Dist, SC ca 1826/30. Mary died there after 1860.
Benjamin and Mary had 8 children, including son Carey Johnson born 1820. Carey married Ara Campbell ca 1844. Ara died in 1896, and Carey in 1900.
Carey and Ara are parents of several children including Celia A. Johnson, born 1857. Celia married Spencer A. Campbell ca 1875. They are my Great Great Grandparents.
