Sherrod Johnson (1765/74) and Elizabeth --- of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandnephew of Sherrod Johnson.

This family resided in the Temperance Hill section of Marion County. "Sherrod" is just one of several spellings for his given name, so I'm not sure which is the "correct" way to spell it. I've seen it listed as "Sharod", "Sharid", "Sherwood" and other ways as well. For the sake of consistency, I'll refer to him as "Sherrod" only, except when quoting records in which case I'll use the spelling as given.

Sherrod Johnson was born ca 1765/74 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a son of Samuel and Mary (---) Johnson. This is proven by Sherrod being named as one of the heirs of Thomas Johnson (his brother) in an 1813 deed (described below).

Sherrod Johnson married someone prior to 1790. I don't know his wife's name. I think that later on he was married to an "Elizabeth", but if that is true, her age indicates she was a second wife, and not the one he was married to at this point. His apparent wife in 1800 was born before 1755, so that makes her a good bit older than him. Of course it is possible that this woman in 1800 was not his wife, but some other relative.

Sherrod Johnson was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

(Marion Co, SC Deed Book B, page 30, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

Sherrod Johnson was listed on the 1800 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed between his father Samuel Johnson and a widow Barbary Johnson (whom I have not yet identified).

On 18 Feb 1802, Sharod Johnson and Roger Roberts witnessed a deed from Samuel Johnson Sr and Mary Johnson (his parents) to Samuel Johnson Jr (his brother). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 237, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

On 2 Feb 1804 Shird Johnson and Thomas Gasque Jr and William Johnson (don't know who he is, could be a son) witnessed a deed from Thomas and Elizabeth Gasque to Enos Tart (his brother-in-law). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D, page 174, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

Sherrod's wife apparently died in the 1800-1810 timeframe, for by 1810, his apparent wife was in a much younger age category (born ca 1765/84), so this is probably the timeframe he married Elizabeth ---. I don't know for sure that he was married to Elizabeth, but this is a theory based on several things. I have not yet found any document proving that his wife was named Elizabeth. First of all, Sherrod's wife (in 1810) was born ca 1765/84, and he died in the 1810-20 timeframe. In 1820 (and also in 1830) there was a widow Elizabeth Johnson in Marion who was a perfect age match, both her and her children, with Sherrod's wife, and she was a neighbor to Sherrod's siblings. All of this is circumstantial, but I believe it works very well. Elizabeth was born ca 1780/84. I don't know her maiden name.

Sherrod Johnson was not listed on the 1809 voter list in Marion District, meaning only that he didn't vote.

Sherrod was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC, just two houses from his brother Benjamin Johnson.

On 25 Aug 1810 Samuel Johnson Sr (his father) sold Sherod Johnson 70 acres on south side of Buck Swamp, for $10. Witnesses were Benjamin Johnson (his brother) and Jesse Moody. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 239, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

Sherrod Johnson was not listed on the 1811 Marion District tax list, meaning (apparently) that he owned no real property, however, as far as I've found, he did have the property deeded to him by his father in 1810.  He probably should have been listed on this tax list, and perhaps he was, but I just missed him.

On 12 Mar 1813, Jesse Moody and wife Nancy Moody sold Sherrod Johnson 100 acres on the south side of Buck Swamp and North East of Ten Mile Bay. Witnesses were Barfield Moody, Sam Smith and Thomas Moody. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 196, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)

Sherrod's brother Thomas Johnson died ca 1813, and on 17 Jul 1813, his brothers and sisters sold their interest in his tract of land to Samuel Johnson Jr (who was also an heir). They were listed as his heirs in this fashion: Mary Johnson, Sherid Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, John Turbeville, William Turbeville, Unity Woods, Robert Moody, Jessey Bryan and Enos Tart. They sold their share to Samuel Johnson (Jr) for $305. Witnesses were Thomas Moody and Roger Moody. This deed proves the entire Samuel Johnson family pretty well. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 271, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)

Sherod Johnson was listed on the 1814 tax list for Marion District, SC and taxed 14 cents.

On 8 Jan 1817 Sherrod Johnson sold Robert Moody 100 acres on North East side of Ten Mile Bay. Witnesses were William Johnson (perhaps a son of Sherrod), and Samuel Johnson (his brother). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G, page 27, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)

Sherrod Johnson apparently died sometime between 1817 and 1820, for I did not find him on the 1820 census. It is possible that he moved away instead, but I think it likely that he died, however, I did not find any Equity or Probate records concerning him, so I could easily be wrong.

I did find a "Shared Johnson" (born bef 1775) on the 1820 census in Warren Co, TN.  In 1830 Henderson Co, TN was "Sherwood" and Sherwood Jr, and on the same page was Benjamin, Samuel and on the next page was William. All of these names are quite familiar to my Johnson family, so it is quite possible that this is our Sherrod Johnson. I don't have the 1830 enumerations yet, so I don't know what ages these folks were. I have not found enough on him yet to be able to say if it is the same guy or not. If it is, then the rest of my data on this page is incorrect (about Elizabeth in 1820 and 1830 Marion being his widow, and so forth.). I'll have to look into the Henderson Co, TN Johnson families in more detail. I've already discovered that it is a burned county, so research there might be difficult.

There was a widow Elizabeth Johnson listed on the 1820 census, and I feel (based on circumstantial evidence) that she could be Sherrod's widow (assuming that isn't our Sherrod out in TN at this same time). Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell where she was living, nor who her neighbors were.

1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1820 Marion Dist, SC pg 61 Elizabeth Johnson 110000-01010
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 10-15       (1804-1810)	Son? (1804/10) --> gone by 1830
1 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820)	Emanuel JOHNSON (1810/15) son
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1775-1794)	Elizabeth ___ Johnson (1780/84) wd/o Sherrod?
1 Female(s) 10-15     (1804-1810)	Daughter? (1804/10) --> gone by 1830 unless 1810/15

Elizabeth Johnson was not listed on the 1824 Marion Tax List.

Elizabeth Johnson was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell where she lived, nor who her neighbors were. She had two younger children with her, who are either grandchildren, or a niece and nephew.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825)	Granddaughter? (1820/25)

I did not find Elizabeth Johnson on the 1840 census. She may have died in the 1830/40 timeframe, or possibly remarried, or been residing with a married child or other relatives.

I did not find any Equity or Probate records for Elizabeth Johnson.

Sellers spoke of this family, in a vague way, but I think what he said helps a little bit. He was referring to the Johnsons of Temperance Hill and he mentioned Hardy and Zeno Johnson as being descendants of this family. He did not say their ancestors name, but I think (based on various bits of circumstantial evidence) that they are grandchildren of Sherrod Johnson:

"In former times there was another family of Johnsons in the Temperance Hill and Buck Swamp region, of prominence and standing, but by death and emigration they have dwindled to only a few. Old Enos Tart's wife, "Susannah", was a daughter of one of these old Johnsons. The mother of old John and Absalom Turbeville was another daughter, and, doubtless, there were others of that generation, but the writer has not been able to get them in any traceable shape. The late Samuel, Carey and David Johnson were descendants, also Hardy and Zeno, and, perhaps others, all from the same stock. These descendants, as known to the writer, are and were good honest men, respectable citizens all of them. Samuel Johnson, whose wife was a Turbeville and still survives, was a most excellent citizen, died childless. Carey and David had families, more or less large; also Hardy and Zeno. David Johnson left, I think, two children, who are now among us. ..." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, by W. W. Sellers, Esq, page 540)

Children

I did not find Equity nor probate records for Sherrod Johnson, nor Elizabeth Johnson. The census records show a large family of sons and daughters, but I have not found proof for any of them so far. I have two children listed by name, but neither of them are proven, though I think they are likely (I'm referring to Richard and Emanuel).

Unknown Son (1784/90) William

Unknown Daughter (1790/94)

Unknown Daughter (1790/1800)

Unknown Daughter (1790/1800)

Unknown Son (1794/1800) Richard

Unknown Son (1794/1800)

Unknown Son (1800/10)

Unknown Daughter (1800/10)

Unknown Son (1804/10)

Unknown Daughter (1804/10)

Unknown Son (1810/15) Emanuel

Unknown Son (1784/90). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1790 (age "under 16", born ca 1774/90) and apparently with him in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90) and apparently still home in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1784/94). He was not with widow Elizabeth for the 1820 census, so possibly married or dead by then.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect this might be "William Johnson" who witnessed one of Sherrod's deeds in 1817, and back in 1804 was a witness along with Sherrod of someone else's deed.

I have no additional data on this William. He did not appear on the 1820 or 1830 census in Marion.

Unknown Daughter (1790/94). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and apparently with him in 1810 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1800). She was not with widow Elizabeth for the 1820 census, so possibly married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1790/1800). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) but gone by 1810, so possibly married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1790/1800). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) but gone by 1810, so possibly married or dead by then.

Unknown Son (1794/1800). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1800 (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and apparently with him in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800). He was not with widow Elizabeth for the 1820 census, so possibly married or dead by then.

I don't have any direct proof, but this could be Richard Johnson (1790/1800) who seemed to be connected to this family somehow. I have very little data on this Richard, but I did find (accidentally) a Richard Johnson (c1798) in the 1850 census in Henderson Co, TN who seems to be a good match with this one, but I can't say for sure if they are one and the same person.

Unknown Son (1800/10). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) He was not with widow Elizabeth for the 1820 census, so possibly married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). She was not with widow Elizabeth for the 1820 census, so possibly married or dead by then.

Unknown Son (1804/10). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent son this age. He was with him in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). He was apparently with widow Elizabeth for the 1820 census (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10), but not with her in 1830, so possibly married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). She was apparently with widow Elizabeth for the 1820 census (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10), but not with her in 1830, unless she was enumerated in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1810/15), which works if she was born ca 1810.

Unknown Son (1810/15). Sherrod Johnson had an apparent son this age. He was with widow Elizabeth Johnson in the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently still with her in 1830 (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15).

I strongly suspect this is Emanuel Johnson who does seem to be part of this Johnson family, though it isn't totally proven. See his own page for additional information.
