Benjamin J. Johnston (Johnson) (c1792) and Evaline --- and Eliza --- of Monroe Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand Nephew of Benjamin Johnston (provided he really is the son of Samuel Johnston). This name is spelled either "Johnson" or "Johnston". Both spellings were used in this family. Benjamin J. Johnston was born ca 1791/92 (per his age on the 1850 census). He was born in Tennessee, possibly in Knox County, though I'm not sure about the county. I don't know what his "J" middle initial stands for. I believe that Benjamin is a son of my ancestor Samuel Johnston (1760/70), but I have no direct proof of that. I have placed him in this family because Benjamin was a close neighbor to two of Samuel's daughters in Monroe Co, TN for many years, and his children were associated with their children, even after moving to other counties. This does not prove that Samuel is Benjamin's father, but it works circumstantially. I'd be happier if some solid evidence could be found though. The 1800 and 1810 census is lost for Tennessee, and the 1820 census is lost for Eastern Tennessee, so I can't determine Benjamin's whereabouts during those years per the census. Benjamin Johnston married Evaline --- before ca 1825, presumably in Monroe Co, TN (no marriage record found). I've only found one document with her name on it, and it is of questionable accuracy. It is the death certificate of their daughter Evaline Johnson Grant (wife of John Grant). It lists her parents as "Ben" and "Evaline" Johnson. Since death certificates are notoriously inaccurate in this regard, this should be considered suspect, however it is all I have to go on at present. Evaline (wife of Benjamin) was born ca 1800/10 (per the 1830 census) or ca 1790/1800 per 1840 census. I don't know what her maiden name may have been. Like several of Samuel Johnston's other children, Benjamin Johnston was listed on the 1830 census in Monroe County, Tennessee. This was not far from where they had lived in Knox County, just a few miles south. They were listed very near to Samuel Hensley (married his sister Nancy Johnson) and Samuel Roddy (married sister Milly Johnson). No other Johnsons were nearby, though Monroe County was full of Johnsons and Johnstons in 1830. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Monroe Co, TN pg 132 Benjamin Johnson 1000010000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Benjamin JOHNSON (1791/92) s/o Samuel of Knox 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Perry JOHNSON (1824/25) son 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Evaline — Johnson (c1800) wife 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830) Eliza JOHNSON (1826/27) daughter Benjamin Johnson was listed on the 1836 Monroe County Tax list in the 17th Civil District. He was taxed for 320 acres, valued at $2000, and 1 Poll (himself). His tax was 50 cents. He was the only Johnson in that district in 1836. Benjamin was still in Monroe County for the 1840 census, and still near his sisters and brothers-in-law Samuel Hensley and Samuel Roddy. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Monroe Co, TN pg 152 Benjamin Johnston 1001010000000-1210001000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) Benjamin JOHNSON (1791/92) s/o Samuel of Knox 1 Male(s) 15-19 (1820-1825) Perry JOHNSON (1824/25) son 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) William JOHNSON (1838/39) son 1 Female(s) 40-49 (1790-1800) Evaline — Johnson (c1800) wife 1 Female(s) 10-14 (1825-1830) Eliza JOHNSON (1826/27) daughter 2 Female(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) Evaline JOHNSON (1832) daughter –> m 1849 Nancy JOHNSON (1833/34) daughter 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Amanda JOHNSON (1840) daughter Evaline (---) Johnson died before 1850 in Monroe Co, TN. During the same time period, for she was not listed with Benjamin on the 1850 census. Benjamin and children were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe, still in the 17th Civil District. Eliza age 23 is with him, and she is either his oldest daughter or his second wife. I'm not sure which. For the moment I'm leaving her as a daughter pending other evidence. They were listed two houses from son Perry and his family. Note that Benjamin's listing was "Johnston", while Perry's was "Johnson". As before they were just a couple of houses from sister Milly Johnson Roddy and sister Nancy Johnson Hensley.

JOHNSON B J 68 M W FARMER 1000 2000 TN 1791/1792 JOHNSON WILLIAM 21 M W FARMER 500 TN 1838/1839 I was unable to find Benjamin on the 1870 census in the 17th District in Monroe County. I found his son Perry and daughter Evaline there that year, and daughter Amanda was in neighboring Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC in 1870. He may have been somewhere else in Monroe (besides the 17th district). I'm fairly sure that Benjamin died 1860/70 in Monroe Co, TN, though it is possible he was still living somewhere in 1870. I found a good match on the 1880 census in Loudon County, Tennessee. Loudon was formed late in 1870 and from several counties, including a small corner of Monroe County. He was listed in Stockton Valley Township. He was listed as by himself, age 83, widowed, born in Tennessee, and both parents born in Virginia. This all fits, but I am sure that this is not the same Benjamin Johnson formerly of Monroe Co, TN, but this is Benjamin Johnson (c1795) formerly of Roane County (also a parent county to Loudon) because many of that Benjamin's children were listed very nearby in 1880. ChildrenBenjamin Johnson had six children per the various census records. Four of them were still home in 1850. One more (Evaline) is proven by her death certificate, and the other one (Perry) is not proven, but he was a neighbor to Benjamin and he fits. I'm quite sure he belongs here. Perry Johnson was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 census) in Monroe Co, TN. He seems to have been home with his parents in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (aged 15-19 born ca 1820/25). I have no direct proof that Perry is Benjamin's son, but he was his neighbor, and he fits. I'm reasonably sure he belongs in this family. On 28 Feb 1845 Perry Johnson married Mary Williams in Monroe Co, TN. This was the first of three marriages between the Johnsons and Williams. Mary was born ca 1828/29 in Monroe Co, TN, daughter of William Williams and Triphena Millsaps. Perry was listed on the 1850 census in Monroe County just 3 houses from his father.

Perry and children were listed on the 1860 census across the river in Blount County at Chilowhee. His occupation was listed as "Gate Keeper", which I assume has something to do with a Ferry or Bridge across the river.

She seems to have been home with her parents in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (aged 10-14 born ca 1825/30). She was still home with her father in 1850 ("Eliza" age 23, born TN). She was no longer at home in 1860, so probably had married or died in the 1850's. Evaline Johnson was born ca 2 May 1832 (per tombstone) in Monroe Co, TN. She seems to have been home with her parents in 1840 (aged 5-9, born ca 1830/35). Evaline is connected by this family via her death certificate which shows her parents as Ben and Evaline Johnson. She married John Grant on 7 Aug 1849 in Monroe Co, TN. They lived in Monroe County awhile, moving over to Cherokee Co, NC and back and forth for awhile, finally settling in what is now Graham County, NC. See their own page for additional information. Manerva Johnson was born ca 1833/34 (per 1850 census) in Monroe Co, TN. She seems to have been home with her parents in 1840 (aged 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was still home with her father in 1850 ("Manervy" age 16, born TN). Sometime before ca 1852, Manerva married her neighbor Jesse Williams, presumably in Monroe Co, TN. He was born ca 1829/30 in Monroe Co, TN, son of William Williams (Sr) and Triphena Millsaps. By ca 1855, they had moved across the mountains into neighboring Cherokee (now Graham) County, North Carolina. They were listed on the 1860 census in Cherokee County, in Cheoah Township. They were next door to Jesse's widowed mother.

I found her son Milton in Loudon Co, TN that year. William Johnson was born ca 1838/39 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Monroe Co, TN. He seems to have been home with his parents in 1840 aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40. He was still home with his father in 1850 ("William" age 11, born TN), and still home in 1860 ("William" age 21, born TN). I have no record of him after 1860. Amanda Johnson was born ca 1840/41 (per 1850, 1860 and 1870 census) in Monroe Co, TN. She may have been home with her parents in 1840 aged "under 5", born ca 1835/40, assuming she was born by the time the census taker came around. If not, then the "1835/40" daughter is someone else, yet unknown. Amanda was still home with her father in 1850 ("Amanda" age 9, born TN). Sometime before ca 1857, Amanda married her neighbor William Williams, presumably in Monroe Co, TN. He was born ca 1831/32 in Monroe Co, TN, son of William Williams (Sr) and Triphena Millsaps. They were listed on the 1860 census in Monroe County in the 17th District near many relatives, and next door to Aunt Milly Johnson Roddy.
