Samuel Johnston (Johnson) (1760/70) of Knox Co, TN

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Samuel Johnston.

This name is spelled either "Johnson" or "Johnston". Both spellings were used in this family.

My information on Samuel Johnson is very sketchy, so I won't have much documentation to report here. An old letter from a Mrs. Bradford states that Andrew Johnson's father had a brother named Sam Johnson. This is referring to this Samuel Johnson, but who was the Andrew Johnson they mentioned? Were they referring to President Andrew Johnson? If so, this doesn't seem to add up, but the rest of the document was of interest because it showed that Nancy Johnson Hensley (wife of Samuel Hensley) was a twin, and a daughter of Samuel Johnson. This old letter is the only source I have showing that Samuel Johnson is my ancestor. Knox County, Tennessee records may have many more answers, but I have done only minimal research in that county.

Samuel Johnston was born ca 1760/1770 (per his age on the 1830 census). He was probably born in Virginia. His daughter Millie was listed on the the 1880 census, and she listed that both her parents were born in Virginia. I have no clue where he came from in Virginia.

I don't know who Samuel Johnston's parents were. I have no clues, nor do I even know where to begin to look.

Samuel may have grown up in Virginia, and came to Tennessee as a young adult, or he may have only been born in Virginia, but grew up in Tennessee. I don't know which possibility is more likely.

Samuel Johnston married someone (I've found no record of her name) probably in the 1790's somewhere in Tennessee. Since he lived in Knox County later on, it is possible he married there, but I've found no record. She was born ca 1770/80 per 1830 census, and probably also born in Virginia (per daughters 1880 census entry).

The 1790, 1800 and 1810 census is lost for Tennessee, so I can't determine where Samuel Johnson was living those years. The 1820 census was lost for all of eastern Tennessee.

Samuel's known and suspected children were born ca 1792, ca 1803, 1804, etc. all in Tennessee. His known children began marrying in Knox County in the early 1820's, so apparently he was living there by then. Based on where his children lived, it seems that he was in the corner of Knox County in the area that borders Blount County, and not far from Monroe County, Tennessee.

Samuel Johnston was listed on the 1830 census in Knox County, Tennessee. He was listed near George Johnson (1790/1800) who could certainly be a son or nephew. There were 22 Johnson / Johnston households in Knox County in 1830. Other than George, none of those other Johnsons were listed anywhere near Samuel Johnson.

I did not find Samuel on the 1840 census in Knox County. He may have died in the 1830's or moved somewhere else. By 1840 many of his children were in Monroe Co, TN and some in Blount Co, TN. The available online 1840 census indexes for Tennessee are terrible, and show no Johnsons in any of these aforementioned counties, though there were plenty of them there in 1840.

Children

Samuel Johnson had three (or possibly) four children with him on the 1830 census. He is claimed to be the father of twins Millie Johnson Roddy and Nancy Johnson Hensley. I also believe he is the father of Benjamin Johnson and Dicy Johnson Roddy, but have no solid proof of that. I have not seen any document proving any of Samuel's children. The Knox County, Tennessee marriage records show many Johnsons marrying in the 1810-1840 timeframe, several of whom could be Samuel's children. However, I have no direct proof for any of his children, so other than Nancy and Millie, this list is highly speculative.

Benjamin Johnson (c1792)

Dicy Johnson (c1804)

Millie Johnson (1804)

Nancy Johnson (1804)

Unknown Son (1800/10) * With Samuel in 1830. No additional data.

Unknown Daughter (1810/15) * With Samuel in 1830. No additional data.

Unknown Daughter (1810/15) * With Samuel in 1830. No additional data.

Benjamin Johnson was born ca 1791/92 (per 1850 census) in Tennessee, presumably Knox County.

I have no direct evidence that Benjamin is a son of Samuel, but he was a close neighbor to Nancy Johnson Hensley and Millie Johnson Roddy in Monroe Co, TN and there seem to be other linkages between him and them. None of this is conclusive, but it seems compelling enough to tentatively include Benjamin as a possible son of Samuel.

See his own page for additional information.

Dicy Johnson was born ca 1803/04 (per 1850 census) in Tennessee (per 1850 census), presumably in Knox County. I think her birth year might be off somewhat since it conflicts with her sisters Millie and Nancy born in 1804 (unless they were triplets).

I have no direct evidence linking Dicy Johnson to Samuel Johnson, but I'll outline my reason for including her here. It is primarily based on the fact that she married Alexander Roddy, a brother to Samuel Roddy who married Milly Johnson, daughter of Samuel. This linkage would seem to tie Dicy into the same family. However, this is just guess work. Dicy and Milly might not be sisters just because they married brothers. They could be first cousins or not related at all.

Dicy was probably with her parents for the 1810 and 1820 census, though those records are lost for Tennessee.

On 29 Mar 1821 Alexander Roddy obtained a marriage bond in Knox County to marry Dicy Johnson. Alexander was born 25 Nov 1792 (source?) in Tennessee, son of James Roddy and Ann Cowan (per other researchers). He was a brother to Samuel Roddy who married Dicy's presumed sister Milly Johnson.

By 1830 they were living in neighboring Blount Co, TN near many of the other Roddys.

I don't have them  in 1840, but I presume they were still in Blount County.

In 1850 they were listed in Blount County near many other Roddys. They had a young Johnson girl with them, presumably a niece.

Dicy seems to have died in the 1850's, for she was not listed with Alexander on the 1860 census.

Alexander and family were listed on the 1860 census in Blount Co, TN.

Alexander Roddy died 19 Aug 1869 (source?) in Blount Co, TN.

Millie Johnson was born 6 Nov 1804 (this is per her sister Nancy's Family Bible, assuming the story about them being twins is correct), in Tennessee (per 1850 census), presumably in Knox County.

Millie is a proven Johnson, as shown by her marriage record. I have seen no direct evidence that she is a child of Samuel Johnson, but an old letter shows that Nancy and her twin sister Millie were daughters of Samuel Johnson. This old letter does not include any documentation on these facts, but it is all I have to connect Millie (and Nancy) to Samuel Johnson.

Millie was probably with her parents for the 1810 and 1820 census, though those records are lost for Tennessee.

On 15 Feb 1825, Samuel Roddy obtained a marriage bond in Knox Co, TN to marry Milly Johnston.  Samuel Roddy was born ca 1796/97 (per age on 1850 census), in Tennessee. He is said (by other researchers) to be a son of James Roddy and Ann Cowan.

They moved to nearby Monroe Co, TN shortly after marriage.

They were listed on the 1830 census in Monroe Co, TN near brother William Roddy (c1801) and Benjamin Johnson (c1792) (brother-in-law) and close to brother-in-law Samuel Hensley.

They were still in Monroe for the 1840 census and had many of the same neighbors. They were just two houses from Samuel Hensley and just 4 or so from Benjamin Johnston.

Samuel Roddy died September 1849 (per 1850 census Mortality Schedule) at age of 52.

Milly and children were listed on the 1850 census in Monroe County just a few houses from sister Nancy Johnson Hensley and brother Benjamin Johnson.

I did not find her in 1870. She may have already moved to Limestone County, Alabama by then.

Milly and son Samuel were together on the 1880 census in Limestone Co, AL. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Nancy Johnson was born 6 Nov 1804 (per her Family Bible), in Tennessee (per 1850 census), presumably in Knox County.

Nancy is a proven Johnson, as shown in her Family Bible and by her marriage record. I have seen no direct evidence that she is a child of Samuel Johnson, but an old letter shows that Nancy and her twin sister Millie were daughters of Samuel Johnson. This old letter does not include any documentation on these facts, but it is all I have to connect Nancy (and Millie) to Samuel Johnson.

Nancy was probably with her parents for the 1810 and 1820 census, though those records are lost for Tennessee.

On 28 May 1823, Samuel Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Knox County to marry Nancy Johnston. Aaron Hood was bondsman (he married Samuel's sister Nancy Hensley at the same time). Apparently the marriage was the next day on the 29th (per the Family Bible), in what was probably a dual ceremony with Samuel's sister Nancy Hensley marrying Aaron Hood.

They moved to nearby Monroe Co, TN by 1828 and remained there until 1852 when they both died (10 days apart). See their own page for additional information.
