Alexander Lane (1787) and Lucinda Blackman of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandson of Alexander and Lucinda Lane.

Special thanks to Denise Lane, Helen Carmichael and others for data shared on this family.

Alexander Lane was born 2 Jun 1787 (date per Calvin Lane, via Helen Carmichael). I'm not sure what the original source for this birth date is. It does work well with all of Alexander's' early census records. His 1850 record gives his age as "60", or born ca 1789/90, which is close to this birth date (of course there are lots of other problems with the 1850 census entries for this family and others).

He was probably born in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Marion County, SC, probably in the Buck Swamp region.

Alexander Lane is a proven son of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford, and was named as such by Sellers in his book, and also named as a son in Osborne Lane's probate records as an heir.

W. W. Sellers said a little bit about Alexander Lane:

"Alexander Lane, the third son of Osborne, I think, married a Miss Blackman (in this I may be mistaken); he lived and died on upper Buck Swamp, below Latta, and near where his father lived and died. Alexander Lane had and raised a numerous family of sons and daughters, only a few of whom are known to the writer. Samuel Lane, the oldest son, as a I suppose, now a very old man, married, first, Sarah Coward, a daughter of Wilson Coward, who owned the lands whereon Dillon now is situated, and by her had six or seven children, two of whom only were sons, William B. and (blank) Lane. One of these emigrated to Texas some years ago, having a family (increasing) when he left. Joseph Lane, another son of old Alexander, married twice (don't know to whom), and had several sons; those known are Alexander, William and Elisha---there are perhaps, other sons and daughters; he died some years ago; was an honest, hard working man, a good soldier in the war. Osborne Lane, another son of Alexander, married a Christmas, and lives near Mallory, on Little Reedy Creek; he has several sons, the names of whom are unknown; he is an honest, hard-working man and a good citizen. Another son of Alexander married a Miss Hensey, and has several sons--has removed to Florence County, and it is said is well to do. Another son of old Alexander, Robert Lane, married a Miss Rogers, and has a family, about whom the writer knows nothing. Another son of old Alexander, Leonard, was killed in the war. They were all good soldiers in the Confederate war." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, pages 393, 394, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

Alexander Lane appears to have been home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed in the age "under 16" category (born ca 1774/90).

Alexander seemed to be home with his parents still for the 1800 census, listed in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1784/90).

He still seemed to be home with his parents for the 1810 census also, aged 16-25 (born ca 1784/94).

Alexander Lane married Lucinda Blackman sometime between 1810 and ca 1812. Her given name is also given in some records as "Cynthia" (I've often seen "Lucinda" and "Cynthia" and other variations used interchangeably).  Her maiden name was given as "Blackman" by Sellers (as quoted above), but as you should note, he wasn't sure at all if he was correct. In fact, I often wonder if he was mistaken, as I've not been able to find any proof that she was a Blackman. She was born ca 1794/95 (per 1860 census) in SC, presumably in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC).  Her age seemed to vary greatly from census record to census record, so I'm not sure that "ca 1794/95" is a good birth date for her or not. For example, on the 1820 census, she was listed as age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804), which fits my proposed birth date. In 1830 she was listed as age 20-29 (born ca 1800/10) which is off. In 1840, she was 40-49 (born ca 1790/1800) which fits. In 1850 she was age "40" (ca 1809/10) which is off again, and in 1860 age "65" (ca 1794/95). So you can see that every other census (1820, 1840 and 1860) agrees with my date.

If Lucinda was indeed a Blackman, there are only a couple of possible parents for her. (See my Blackman pages for more on this family name in Marion County). Solomon Blackman (Jr) and David Blackman Sr (1744) seem like the most likely suspects, but no proof that either are Lucinda's father.

For the War of 1812, Alexander Lane enlisted in Captain Elisha Bethea's Company, 5th Regiment South Carolina Militia from 29 Jun 1812 through 29 Sep 1812. (I believe this roster was published in an issue of the "Pee Dee Queue", though I can't find an exact reference right now).

Alexander Lane was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.

Alexander Lane was mentioned in several of the probate records for his father Osborne Lane's estate (June - July 1840). (Probate Roll # 462, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 269, 270).

Alexander and Lucinda and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC.  They were two houses from son Samuel Lane.

Alexander Lane died in the 1850-1860 timeframe. Helen Carmichael gave me "1858" as the year. I'm not sure of the source for that yet, but it works.

Widow Lucinda was listed on the 1860 census in Marion District. She was listed as "Cyntha" (a common nickname for "Lucinda"). She was two houses from her nephew Stephen L. Lane (c1817) son of James Lane, and three houses from nephew John G. Lane (c1820) son of John Lane.  She was also just a few houses from John Blackman (c1776), a possible blood relative of hers (he was a brother-in-law, having married Alexander Lane's sister Elizabeth).

Lucinda Blackman Lane apparently died in the 1860-1870 timeframe, as I did not find her on the 1870 census.

Children

Alexander Lane and Lucinda Blackman had at least nine children, and probably a few others, based on census analysis. A few are still unknown.

Samuel Lane was born Apr 1813 (per 1900 census) in Marion Dist, SC. His age varies widely from census to census. In 1850 he was "28" (born ca 1821/22), in 1860, "45" (born ca 1814/15), 1870 "40" (ca 1829/30), 1880 "60" (ca 1819/20) and finally in 1900 age 87, born April 1813. Since no two of these records agree with each other, I don't know which is more accurate.

Samuel was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently with them in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20).

Samuel Lane married Sarah Ann Coward between 1830 and ca 1839 in Marion Dist, SC. She was born ca 1825/26 in Marion Dist, SC, and is a child of Wilson and Sarah Coward. Her maiden name was given by Sellers, and is also proven by the will of her father dated 28 Mar 1853, naming his daughter "Sarah Lane". Equity records further prove that she was married to Samuel Lane. (Probate Roll # 983, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 140).

Samuel Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC next door to his father-in-law Wilson Coward.

I did not find Samuel and Sarah on the 1870 census, though I did find a Samuel Lane, age 40, living alone in Moody Township, very close to brother Joseph Lane. Even though the age is wrong, this seems to be Samuel. It looks like Sarah Coward Lane had died in the 1860's, probably between 1863 and 1870. Several of Samuel's younger children were residing with another family nearby. (Another record shows that Sarah died in March 1877, see below).

I don't know when Samuel Lane died, though it was sometime after 1900.

In 1910, Dillon County was created from upper Marion, including Manning Township, so from that point on, the family was in Dillon County.

Back on 15 Feb 1878 several of Samuel and Sarah's children brought a case pertaining to the estate of Wilson Coward, their grandfather. The record included reference to their mother Sarah Lane having died in March 1877 (which makes me wonder where she was in 1870?). The record also names the surviving children of Sarah Lane: Andrew Lane, Lucinda Lane alias Jackson, Sally Lane alias Powers, Louisa Lane, Adaline Owens, wife of David Owens, Benjamin Lane and Crawford Lane. (Probate Roll # 1317, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 225).

Unknown Son (1815/20). Alexander Lane had an apparent son this age with him for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently with him in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I have no direct proof, but it seems very likely that this is either Benjamin Lane (c1819/20) or William C. Lane (c1819/20). Both of these men are a perfect age match, and both are otherwise unconnected to parents. Both lived near Alexander, so both are strong suspects to be this unknown son.

Unfortunately, I have not found any conclusive proof to help decide which of these (if either) is a son of Alexander and Lucinda Lane.

Unknown Daughter (1810/20). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1810/20). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1840, so probably married or dead by then.

I have long thought this could be Hannah, wife of Asa Johnson, but I have no proof that she was even a Lane, much less a child of Alexander. My main reason for connecting them is that Joseph Lane was residing with Asa and Hannah in 1850 as a Laborer, but that does not necessarily mean they are related. More research is needed.

Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Alexander Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still with him in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.

Joseph Lane was born 1827/28 in Marion Dist, SC. He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and apparently home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

Special thanks to Denise Lane for data shared on this family.

Joseph was living with Asa and Hannah Johnson for the 1850 census, listed as a Laborer. I don't know if they are related in any way.

Sarah J. Lane apparently died in the 1860's in Marion Dist, SC.

Joseph Lane married Joanna Blackman in the 1860's. I don't know when Sarah died and when he married Joannah. It is possible that I have some of the children assigned to the wrong mother. Joanna was born ca 1836/37 in Marion Dist, SC, daughter of Stephen and Emily Blackman. (Stephen is a son of John Blackman and Elizabeth Lane).

Joseph and Joanna were listed on the 1870 census in Moody Township.

I did not find Joseph Lane, nor Joanna on the 1900 census. Someone (don't recall who) shared a death date of 18 Mar 1888 for Joseph. I don't know what the source for this is.

Robert Lane (c1829) was born ca 1828/29 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. He did not seem to be home with his parents in 1830, though he did seem to be home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census, listed as "Robert" age 21. He was also listed with the Nelson and Ann Barrentine family as a laborer, listed the same age (21). I'm fairly sure this is a duplicate entry, and does not represent another Robert Lane, though that is a possibility.

I don't know if there is a Lane family relationship to the Barrentines. Ann is certainly the correct age to be one of Robert's unidentified sisters.

Robert Lane married Annice Rogers before ca 1857 in Marion Dist, SC. Her maiden name is per Sellers, though he did not say who her parents were. She was born ca 1839/40 (per 1870 census) or ca 1829/30 (per 1880 census). I checked all the Rogers in the 1850 census (and there were a lot of them!) but none with a daughter named "Annice" or "Annis". There were several named "Ann" who were about the right age, but no way for me to know which was this one (assuming one of them is her).

For some reason, I did not find Robert and family on the 1860 census, at least they were not in Marion District. They were either missed by the census taker, or had moved away temporarily.

For the Civil War, Robert Lane enlisted as a Private in Company D, 25th Regiment Infantry. ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 635, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

They were listed on the 1870 census in Marion County, in Manning Township. They were not near any other Lanes.

I did not find Robert on the 1900 census, though Sellers said he was still living when he wrote his book (published in 1901).

John Osborne Lane was born 7 Nov 1831 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. This date conflicts with most of his early census entries, and I'm not sure it is correct (at least the year).

He was apparently home with his parents in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40, which conflicts with his birth date). He was home with his parents in 1850 ("John" age 12, which also conflicts with his birth date, but does agree with the 1840 entry). I strongly suspect that John was born ca 1838, or sometime between 1835-1840, for this agrees with his 1840, 1850 and 1870 census entries. Even his 1900 census entry is closer to this date (showing him born in "1840"). Only the 1880 census entry agrees with an "1831" birth year.

John O. Lane was not listed in Marion for the 1860 census. Since his brother Stephen was also missing that year, they may have been together somewhere.

For the Civil War, I don't know if John O. Lane participated or not. The records show a "J. O. Lane" listed, but there were several men by that name in Marion. Sellers listed the one in the War as having been "wounded", and that he was dead by the time of his writing. That probably means it was a different J. O. Lane. (Probably John O. Lane, son of James Lane Sr).

John Osborne Lane married Mary Jane Christmas before ca 1864 in Marion Dist, SC. Her maiden name was given by Sellers. I found only one Mary Christmas in the early records, and she was a daughter of Nathan and Catherine Christmas. I assume this is the same person. Their ages are compatible. Mary Jane was born 12 Nov 1834 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census.

Mary J. Christmas was married previous to her marriage to John O. Lane. She married a Mr. Calder (based on her Calder children being with them in 1870). I found her on the 1860 census in Marion, already widowed, so I don't know who her husband was. She apparently married Mr. Calder between 1850 and ca 1852, and he died between ca 1857 and 1860.

John O. Lane and Mary and their children, and Mary's Calder children were listed on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC, in Bethea Township.

For the 1880 census, John O. Lane and family were in Bethea Township still, though for some reason he was listed as "Osborne S. Lane", which could be a mistake, or indication that he had an additional given name besides John and Osborne, though I don't know what the "S" might have stood for. It could be an abbreviated "Sr".

In 1910, Dillon County was formed from the northern (or "Upper") section of Marion County, and this included Bethea Township where the John O. Lane family resided.

** Presumably, John and Mary were listed on the 1910 census in Dillon. I have not checked for this entry yet.

Mary Jane died on 12 Feb 1917 in Dillon Co, SC, and John Osborne Lane died on 6 Sep 1918 in Dillon County. They are both buried at Catfish Creek Baptist Church in Dillon Co, SC. (This cemetery and others are online at the Dillon Co, SC GenWeb pages)

Charlotte Lane was born 14 Jun 1833 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was home with her parents for the 1850 census ("Charlott", age 14).

Charlotte Lane married Ebenezer Campbell between 1850 and ca 1852 in Marion Dist, SC.

Ebenezer and Charlotte are my ancestors.

Charlotte died 21 May 1899 in Marion Co, SC. See their own page for additional information.

Stephen Lane was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC. I have a birth date of 7 Oct 1839 for him, but I don't know the source. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Stephen", age 10), but gone by 1860. He was not listed in Marion for the 1860 or later census records.

Someone (can't recall who) told me that Stephen moved to Cartersville, SC and died there on 9 Mar 1912. Cartersville is in present Florence County, but was in Darlington District for many years (until 1888 when Florence was formed).

Sellers did not mention Stephen Lane by name, but he did mention a son of Alexander who moved to Florence County: "Another son of Alexander married a Miss Hensey, and has several sons--has removed to Florence County, and it is said is well to do.". It would seem he is referring to Stephen Lane. More research is needed though to confirm this.

I did not find Stephen Lane on the 1860 or 1870 index in Darlington.

Leonard Lane was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census ("Leonard", age 8) and with his widowed mother for the 1860 census ("Leonard", age 19).

For the Civil War, Leonard Lane enlisted on 1 Aug 1861 as a Private in Company F, Gregg's First Regiment. According to the record, he died April 1864. (He was listed as "Lemuel Lane" in the roster, for some reason). ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 589, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

Sellers mentioned earlier that Leonard Lane was killed in the War, so based on that, I'm reasonably sure the record quoted above for "Lemuel Lane" is actually Leonard Lane instead. (I know of no one named "Lemuel Lane" in this area).
