Benjamin Lane (c1820) and Elizabeth of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to Benjamin Lane, though it seems highly likely he is connected to my Lane family.

Benjamin Lane was born ca 1819/1820 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know who his parents are, but there seem to be only two strong suspects, Alexander Lane, son of old Osborne had a son about this age who is unidentified and so did John Lane, eldest son of Osborne. These two men are the prime suspects as father of both Benjamin Lane and William C. Lane, both of whom where the same age, so I suspect one is Alexander's son, the other is John's.

For the 1820 census, assuming he was born already, Benjamin Lane would have been one year old or less, so if enumerated with his parents, he would be in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). Thomas Lane (1770/74) had an unidentified son this age, however in 1830 that same apparent son was born ca 1810/15 which doesn't quite work for Benjamin. Alexander Lane (1787) had an apparent son this age in 1820. John Lane (1765/70) had an apparent son this age also.

For the 1830 census, Benjamin would have been about 10 years old, so probably enumerated in either the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20) or possibly in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). Alexander Lane (1787) had an apparent son this age (ca 1815/20) in 1830. John Lane (1765/70) had an apparent son this age also (ca 1815/20). And in both cases, John and Alexander's apparent sons were gone by 1840, which fits for Benjamin, since he married in the 1830's. Unfortunately I have not found anything to narrow the choice or parents down any further than Alexander or John. I am sure that one of them must be Benjamin's father.

Though W.W. Sellers wrote quite a lot about the Lane family, he didn't mention Benjamin Lane in his book.

Benjamin Lane married Elizabeth --- ca 1838 in Marion Dist, SC. I have one good clue about her maiden name, but I haven't figured it out yet. In 1880, Elizabeth Lane (then a widow) was residing with Martha Perritt age 52 (born ca 1827/28) also listed as a widow. They were listed as sisters. Martha was the 2nd wife of David Perritt (Sr) (c1784-1872) whom she married in the 1860's. Unfortunately, I don't know her maiden name either. Since they were sisters, if I can find one, I should find the other.

Benjamin Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was just two households from Alexander Lane, so based only on that (and what I mentioned before), this makes Alexander the front runner as a possible father of Benjamin.

1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820)	Elizabeth ___ Lane (1819/20) wife

For the 1850 census, Benjamin Lane seemed to be living in what later became Reaves Township. He was two houses from Crawford Lane, who was probably his 1st cousin, and he was next door to my ancestor Mary Barnes Campbell, widow of James Campbell (who's son Ebenezer married Charlotte Lane, daughter of Alexander Lane). This seems a little more evidence that Benjamin is a son of Alexander, but certainly not conclusive.

Benjamin Lane died sometime prior to 1860. Elizabeth, his widow, was listed as head of household on the 1860 census, and they had no additional children born after 1850, so he may have died closer to 1850, than 1860, say ca 1851. Unfortunately, the census taker for this census listed many people only by their first initial, so that makes it difficult to properly identify everyone, but I think it is clear this is the same family. This looks like they were in (what later became) Moody Township at this time, though could have still been in Reaves (where they were before and after).

I found no trace of this family on the 1870 census, and that is easily explained by where they lived: Reaves Township. Apparently a huge section of this township was missed by the census taker in 1870, as I am missing quite a few people from this census, all who lived in the same area of Reaves Township.

Elizabeth Lane and was listed on the 1880 census in Reaves township living with her sister, a widow Martha Perritt (widow of David Perritt Sr c1784-1872). Her daughter "Fanny Lane" was with her, and I think this is the same person as "Martha F. Lane" though the age is off somewhat. She is listed as "20" but should be "30", so either I read it wrong or it was reported wrong. The published version of this census also gives "20".

I did not find Elizabeth nor Fanny on the 1900 census.

Children

Benjamin Lane and Elizabeth --- had at least 5 children, all proven by the 1850 and 1860 census.

Hansford Lane (c1840)

Samuel Lane (c1842)

Celia Lane (c1844)

Hapsey Lane (c1846)

Martha Frances Lane (c1850)

Hansford Lane was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census,  but gone by 1860. He may have died, though he would have been old enough to have moved away.

Samuel Lane was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents in 1850 and 1860 census.

For the Civil War, "Samuel Lane" enlisted as a Private in Company L, Eighth Regiment Infantry. Samuel was reported wounded at Fredericksburg and surrendered at Greensboro and still living at the time of his book (ca 1901). ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 604, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

I didn't find Samuel Lane on the 1870 census, nor later census records. If he was the same Samuel that Sellers reported as "living" when he wrote his book, then where was he? This may show that the Samuel who served in the Civil War is not this Samuel, but the older Samuel Lane (son of Alexander Lane). There were no other Samuels that were old enough to have served. I suspect though that Sellers was thinking of one of the younger Samuels when he said he was still living.

Celia Lane was born ca 1843/44 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents in 1850 and 1860. The entire family was missing in 1870, and in 1880 she was not home with her mother, so probably had married or died before then.

Hapsey Lane was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents in 1850, but gone by 1860, so had probably married or died by then.

Martha Frances Lane was born ca 1850 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents on the 1850 census, listed as 1 month old. She was home with them in 1860 also, listed as an "Idiot". In 1870 the entire family was missing, but in 1880 she was still with her mother in Reaves Township.
