Crawford Lane and Ann Perritt of Marion Co, SCI (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin 5 times removed of Crawford Lane. Crawford Lane was born 22 Sep 1812 in Marion Dist, SC. He was probably born in what is now Moody Township. In later years he lived in Reaves Township. Crawford Lane is a son of James C. Lane and Mary Lee. "Crawford" was the maiden name of Crawford Lane's grandmother (Hepsabeth, wife of Osborne Lane). It might also have been James C. Lane's middle name, though we don't know that for sure. Crawford Lane was mentioned by W.W. Sellers in his History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902. On page 394 he wrote up some data on Crawford Lane (anything in brackets [] was added by me):
Sometime prior to 1838 Crawford Lane married Ann Perritt in Marion Dist, SC. According to Sellers, she is a daughter of David Perritt. Crawford Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was just a few households from his parents. As best as I can determine, this area was in Moody Township. He was listed between Henry Turner and Martha Turner. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): 1840 Marion District, SC pg 140 Crawford Lean 0000100000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Crawford LANE (1810/11) s/o James & Mary 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Ann PERRITT Lane (1818) wife 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Sarah LANE (1837/38) daughter By 1850 Crawford Lane and family seemed to have moved to Reaves Township. Unfortunately, the census taker for this census listed many people only by their first initial, so that makes it difficult to properly identify everyone. Simeon Campbell recorded that Crawford Lane died July 10, 1884 (page 42). Ann Perritt Lane, his wife, died 21 Jul 1896. I don't have a source for that date just yet. Children:Crawford Lane and Ann Perritt had 11 known children. They are all proven by the 1850 through 1880 census records. Sellers only mentioned two of them in his Lane writeup (Addison and James). The birth and death dates I have for many of these, and their children, come from the cemetery records, but I failed to properly note that when I first gathered this information (many years ago). Some of the dates may also have come from other researchers. Sarah Lane was born ca 1837/38 in Marion Dist, SC, (I have a birth date of 31 Oct 1838 for her, but don't know the source). Sarah was home with her parents in 1850 and 1860 census. She married David Bryant before 1866. They were listed on the 1870 census in Moody township, and in 1880 in Reaves Township. I have a death date for Sarah as 17 Jul 1928 (source?). Daniel Frank Lane was born ca 1839/40 in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. For the Civil War, "D.F. Lane" enlisted in Company H, Twenty-third Regiment Infantry as a Corporal. He surrendered at Appomattox. (per Sellers, page 621) I didn't find Daniel Lane on the 1870 census, nor the 1880 census. Sellers reported him as still living at the time of his book (ca 1901). I have a death date of 1928 (source?) for Daniel, but I don't know where he may have gone to, nor who he married. There is a Franklin D. Lane in 1880 Marion County, in Moody Township, who is the right age (40, born ca 1840), with wife Charlotte (Gasque). However, I thought this was Franklin Lane, son of John O. Lane and Margaret Sweat, but I could have the two confused, as they are about the same age. Whichever Frank it was who married Charlotte Gasque, they were in Marion in 1870 and 1880, but Sellers mentioned they were living in Horry at the time of his book (ca 1901) in the Gasque section. I'll have to try and sort this out somehow. George W. Lane was born ca 1841/42 in Marion Dist, SC. I have a birth date of 12 Oct 1842 (source?) for him. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. For the Civil War, "G.W. Lane" enlisted in Company L, Tenth Regiment Infantry as a Private, but was later transferred. (per Sellers, page 601) Apparently he was transferred to Company H, Twenty-third Regiment Infantry, for a Private George W. Lane showed up in that unit. (per Sellers, page 624) Around 1866, George W. Lane married Mary Edwards Smith, widow of Ebenezer Smith, and daughter of David S. Edwards and Martha Rogers. I didn't find George W. Lane on the 1870 census, unless he was the "George B. Lane" living with my Uncle Barnabas Edwards in Rowell Township. I don't know who else this George could be. The age isn't quite right, and the middle initial is wrong, and the birth place is wrong, but it could still be the same George Lane. He was age 22 and born in NC. However, the George under study here should have been married with at least 2 children by 1870. He was probably in that section of Reaves Township that was missed by the census taker (I'm missing several ancestors and other relatives who should have been in Reaves Township in 1870). In 1880, George was in Reaves Township, not too many houses from his parents. His household contained two Smith step children. Lane's on 26 Oct 1908 (source?). Addison L. Lane was born 6 Oct 1844 (source?) in Marion Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census. For the Civil War, Addison L. Lane enlisted as a Private in Company H, Twenty-third Regiment Infantry. He surrendered at "Five Forks". (Per Sellers page 624). Addison L. Lane married Cherry Bryant ca 1867 in Marion Dist, SC. Sellers listed her as a daughter of John Miller Bryant. Addison and Cherry were listed next door to his parents on the 1870 census: (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1870 MARION CO, SC Page 252B House/Family # 18/ 18--REEVES Twp LANE ADDISON 25 M W FARMER 99 SC 1844/1845 LANE CHERRY 27 F W KEEPING HOUSE SC 1842/1843 LANE REBECCA 2 F W SC 1867/1868 LANE BASCOM 0 M W 9/12 OCT SC 1869/1870 By 1880, Addison and family had moved to Moody Township, probably around or in the town of Latta. I'm sure these were shared with me by another researcher, but I can't recall who at the moment. I also show Cherry Bryant Lane's death on 27 Jan 1923 in Latta, Dillon Co, SC, and Addison's death, same place on 31 Dec 1923. Elizabeth Lane was born ca 1845/46 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents in 1850, but gone by 1860, so probably had married or died by then, though only about 14 or so. James D. Lane was born ca 1848/49 in Marion Dist, SC. He was not listed on the 1850 census, so this birth may be off slightly, but he was home in 1860 listed as age 11 (and 21 in 1870, and 31 in 1880), so based on the evidence, I'd have to say the 1850 census is the one that is wrong. He was too young for service in the Civil War. He was still home with his parents for the 1870 census. James D. Lane married Irena Campbell ca 1878 in Marion Co, SC. She was a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Campbell. Samuel was a son of William S. Campbell and Nancy Carmichael. James and Irena were listed on the 1880 census in Marion Co, SC in Reaves Township. She was home with her parents for the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. I have a death date of 31 Mar 1926 (source?) for her. Hapsey Lane was born ca 1853/54 in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. Virginia Jane Lane was born ca 1857/58 in Marion Dist, SC, but she was not listed on the 1860 census with her parents. However, she was with them in 1870 (age 12) and 1880 (age 22). Catherine Sophia Lane was born 30 Oct 1862 (source?) in Marion Dist, SC. She was home with her parents in 1870 and 1880. She married Joseph Rogers (source?) sometime after 1880.
