Osborne Lane (c1750-1840) and Hepsabeth Crawford (1752-1820/30) of SC (Marion County)
Introduction - A History of my research on this family
My Lane Family - Data on my Lane ancestors
When I first started doing family history (in 1980), I began with my dad's side of the family, but very soon I turned to my mother's side. After receiving information from my mother and from my Great Aunt Dot (Dorothy Turner Campbell) I had my Campbell family back to Spencer A. Campbell my Great Great Grandfather.
Soon I discovered that my Campbell family was written up in the great book A History of Marion County, South Carolina by W.W. Sellers, 1902 and they had an entire article written on them. This article had some mistakes (I later discovered) but it was still most helpful. In it, he included Spencer Campbell as a son of Ebenezer Campbell and Charlotte Lane. This was the first I found on my Lane family. I then discovered the Lane family was also covered in the same book.
I went to the Marion Public Library for the first time in the mid 1980's, and while there I found two items of great interest to me in regards to the Lane family. The first was a book entitled The Ancestry and Known Descendants of Joseph Lane (1770-1850) of Marion County, South Carolina and Simpson County, Mississippi. By Marilyn Lane Sirmon and William Arnold Sirmon, 1986. The other item of interest was the "Visitors Log" where patrons of the history room signed in and left their names, addresses, and who they were researching. I found Denise Lane's name listed, and I wrote down her address.
I wrote Denise Lane around that time (ca 1986-1988) and soon she and I were sharing information. I believe she gave me Marilyn Sirmon's address, and I wrote to her as well, and we shared information. I purchased a copy of her book, and found it to be extremely well done, and very useful. Soon afterwards, I was in touch with Calvin and Ruth Lane, who also shared data on the family.
So, I'd like to give a special "thank you" to Calvin and Ruth Lane, Denise Lane and to Marilyn Lane Sirmon for their help on this family. The information they provided in the beginning of my research was invaluable. I'd also like to thank W.W. Sellers (deceased) for his book. Over the years I've heard from lots of my Lane cousins, and all (or most) of them have added little bits of data to the family tree, so thanks to all of them as well. Recently I've also heard from Helen Lane Carmichael, who has also been very helpful.
My earliest known ancestor Osborne Lane was born ca 1750/55 (or earlier), probably somewhere in South Carolina. He married Hepsabeth Crawford ca 1770 or so. They lived in the Buck Swamp area of South Carolina. This "Swamp" (or creek) is now part of the border between Marion and Dillon County. I don't know who Osborne's parents may have been, though there were Lane families in this general region of SC at the time he was born. None of them stand out as possible parents.
Osborne and Hepsabeth were the parents of several children, including my ancestor Alexander Lane who was born in 1787. Alexander Lane married Lucinda Blackman. Their daughter Charlotte Lane married Ebenezer Campbell, and they are my 3rd Great Grandparents.
By 1900 almost all of Osborne Lane's descendants (who remained in this area) were still to be found in Manning, Reaves and Moody Townships of Marion County, SC, and of course some were in other Townships.
I have set up several web pages, each containing documentation, for different branches of this family. Follow the links below for more information.
