James Lane (c1784) and Mary Lee of Marion Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandnephew of James Lane. Special thanks to Dan Griggs, Peggy J. Pratt and Bill Snipes for data shared on this family. James Lane was born ca 1783/84 in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Marion County, SC, probably in the Buck Swamp region. James Lane is a proven son of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford, and was named as such by Sellers in his book, and also named as a son in Osborne Lane's probate records as an heir, and he was also Administrator of the estate of his father. Other than Sellers referring to James with a middle initial of "C", I've not found any other record showing this James with a middle initial. It could be correct, but I'd like to see a reference, other than Sellers. Presumably, James Lane grew up in the Buck Swamp area (near present day Latta in the Dillon - Marion County border area) W. W. Sellers said a little bit about James Lane:
Sellers said quite a bit more than what I've quoted above, naming who the children married. He left out three daughters. Later in another section he named one more daughter, Polly (Mary) who married Daniel Platt. James Lane appears to have been home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed in the age "under 16" category (born ca 1774/90). James seemed to be home with his parents still for the 1800 census, listed in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1784/90). James Lane married Mary Lee in the 1800-1810 timeframe. Sellers said that James married a "Miss Lee", and the 1850 census shows James' wife as "Mary", so I'm assuming they were one and the same person. I have not yet found any record (other than Sellers) that proves that Mary was a Lee, and that she was a child of John Lee (as Sellers said). It may be totally correct, but I don't know what the proof is. There were three John Lees listed on the 1800 census in Marion. I don't know which of these was Mary's father. Mary was born ca 1784/90 (per analysis of 1810-1840 census records), although the 1850 census gave her age as "50" which works out to a birth of ca 1799/1800. However, James' age was also wrong in 1850, so the entire entry is suspect, in my opinion. On 15 Feb 1806, James Lane (and Samuel Blackwell and John McCown) witnessed a deed from Henry Culpepper of Marion to Joseph Causick (Cusack) of Darlington for land on Jeffries Creek. It is quite possible that this was the other James Lane who lived in Darlington at that time, but came to Marion a few years later. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book C, page 233, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) James Lane was listed on the 1809 voter list in Marion Dist, SC. James Lane was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC just two houses from John Lee Sr (who was next to John Lee Jr). 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Marion Dist, SC pg 82B James Lane 00100-30100-0-2 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) James LANE (1783/84) s/o Osborne 1 Female(s) 16-25 (1784-1794) Mary LEE Lane (1784/90) wife 3 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Daughter? For the War of 1812, James Lane enlisted in Captain Elisha Bethea's Company, 5th Regiment South Carolina Militia from 29 Jun 1812 through 29 Sep 1812. (I believe this roster was published in an issue of the "Pee Dee Queue", though I can't find an exact reference right now). James Lane was listed on the 1814 tax list in Marion District, and taxed $3.69. James Lane was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Marion Dist, SC pg 62 James Lane 300010-22010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) James LANE (1783/84) s/o Osborne 3 Male(s) 0-9 (1810-1820) Crawford LANE (1812) son James C. One was this James Lane, and I don't know who the 2nd James was. The third one was obviously James Lane (1790/94) of Darlington, who moved to Marion around this time. It is possible that both of the other listings for James were both for James Lane. One was taxed for $1.80, and the other for $33.45. Two men named "James Lane" were listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who the neighbors were. Both this James and the other James (formerly of Darlington) were listed simply as "James Lane", but I think I've properly separated them based on the ages given. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion Dist, SC pg 31 James Lane 0112001000000-1210001000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1780-1790) James LANE (1783/84) s/o Osborne 2 Male(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Crawford LANE (1812) --> married by 1838 James C. James and Mary and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC. They were next to son James Jr. The ages given for both James and Mary seem to be off by about 10 years.

I did not find him listed on the 1880 census. His daughter Sarah, who had been with him all the preceding years, was living by herself in 1880. ChildrenJames Lane and Mary Lee had at least eleven children, only eight of which were mentioned by Sellers. One more is proven (more or less) by the 1850 census, and two more were given to me by other researchers. Peggy Pratt informed me that heirs are named in James' estate records, which I have not seen yet. Unknown Daughter (1800/10). James Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). She was gone by 1820, so possibly married, or more likely died young. Penelope Lane was born ca 1808/09 (per 1850 census) or ca 1805/06 (per 1860 census) in Marion Dist, SC. I did not know about Penelope to begin with. She was not mentioned by Sellers, but after corresponding with Peggy J. Pratt, she told me that Penelope Lane Turbeville, deceased was named as an heir in James Lanes estate records. Penelope was apparently home with her parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and apparently with them in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10). She married William B. Turbeville before 1830. William was born ca 1804/05 in Marion District, SC. I don't know who his parents were. William Turbeville was listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were. There were two Williams listed, but it is clear which one was this one from the ages. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion Dist, SC pg 49 William Turbeville 0000100000000-2000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) William B. William and Penelope and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. Apparently, Penelope died in the 1860/70 timeframe. Sometime afterwards, still between 1860 and 1870, William Turbeville married again to Lydia Cribb daughter of Anthony Cribb and Cortney Runnells. William and Lydia were listed on the 1870 and 1880 census in Marion, in Brittons Neck Township. Mary Lane was born 2 Jan 1809 (per Dan Griggs) in Marion Dist, SC. Bill Snipes, Dan Griggs and Peggy Pratt have shared a great deal of data with me on this part of the Lane family. Most of the birth and death dates that I have for this branch of the family came from the above listed researchers. I'm not sure what the original sources were, whether cemetery or bible records, or other sources. Mary seems to have been at home with her parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and apparently with them in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10). Mary Lane married Daniel Platt on 10 Jun 1826 (per Bill Snipes) in Marion Dist, SC. Daniel was born 15 Dec 1782 (also per Bill Snipes). I don't know who his parents were. He seemed to be only Platt in the area. He may have moved in from somewhere else. Daniel Platt was previously married to Martha Bass, and had several children with her. He was listed on the 1810 and 1820 census in Marion Dist, SC (both prior to his marriage to Mary Lane). Daniel Platt was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This record was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion Dist, SC pg 40 Daniel Platt 1121101000000-1100100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1780-1790) Daniel PLATT (1782) 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Son? Moody sometime between 1840 and 1847 in Marion Dist, SC. Josiah was born 1823/24. I don't know who his parents were. His mother might be named "Susan", for in 1860 he was living with a Susan Moody, possibly a widow then. Josiah and Mary were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC. Several of her Platt children were with them, and mistakenly listed under the "Moody" surname (a common census problem). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. Apparently Mary Lane Platt Moody died in the 1850/60 timeframe in Marion Dist, SC. I found J. W. Moody living without her in Marion, residing with a Susan Moody, age 65 (born ca 1794/95), who could be his mother. I didn't find Josiah in 1870. There are several Marion County Equity and Probate records that prove the names of Daniel and Mary's children, though only a few of them include who the children were married to. I have the names of spouses for some of the children as shared with me by the researchers mentioned earlier. Crawford Lane was born 22 Sep 1812 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20) and apparently with them still in 1830 census (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15). Crawford Lane married Ann Perritt before ca 1838 in Marion Dist, SC. Her maiden name is per Sellers. She was born 22 Jun 1818 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC, a daughter of David Perritt and Sarah Bryant. Crawford Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC he was just a couple of houses from his father James Lane. He was listed between Henry Turner and Martha Turner, so that puts him in the Catfish area. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion Dist, SC pg 140 Crawford Lean 0000100000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Crawford LANE (1812) s/o James & Mary 1 Female(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Ann PERRITT Lane (1818) wife 1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Sarah LANE (1838) daughter Crawford and Ann were listed on the 1850 census in Marion Dist, SC just a few houses from William Lane (c1820) and Benjamin Lane (c1820), and just two houses from my ancestor Mary Barnes Campbell (widow of James Campbell).

She was home with them for sure in 1850 listed as "Sarah Lane" age 37. She apparently married a Mr. Jones sometime between 1850 and 1860. He apparently died before 1860. I don't know who he was. Sarah was listed on the 1860 census with her father, and listed as "S. A. Jones" age 40. She was with her father in 1870, listed as "Sarah Lane" age 30 (which of course is way off!). In 1880 she was living alone, listed as "Sarah A. Jones" age 70, and widowed. She died sometime after 1880. James C. Lane was born ca 1814/15 (per 1850 and 1870 census) in Marion Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20) and apparently with them still in 1830 census (age 15-19, born ca 1810/15). James married twice, first to Susan Bryant before ca 1838. (Maiden name per Sellers). She was born ca 1812/13 in Marion Dist, SC daughter of William Bryant and Rebecca Miller. James Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC next to his father, and next to Joseph Turner. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion Dist, SC pg 140 James Lane Jr 1100100000000-1000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) James C. If so, she was born 13 Oct 1829, presumably in Marion. She might be the same person as "Telatha Christmas" daughter of Nathan and Catherine Christmas. Her age and name matches, and there are two Christmas children with them here in 1880.

James was born ca 1806/07 in Marion Dist, SC. James is a son of Abijah Porter and Charity Crawford (daughter of James Crawford). James C. I don't know when Hapsey died, though it was after 1880. Ophelia Lane was born ca 1824/25 (per 1860 census) in Marion Dist, SC. She was apparently home with her parents for the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and apparently home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). According to Sellers, she married a "Mr. Turbeville". Census records show that it was Richard Turbeville to whom she was married. They married sometime between 1840 and ca 1844 in Marion Dist, SC. Richard was born ca 1821/22 in Marion Dist, SC, a son of William Turbeville and Mary Johnson (per Peggy Pratt). I'm not sure what the proof of his parentage is. For some reason, Richard and Ophelia were not listed on the 1850 census, at least not in Marion Dist, SC. They were either missed by the census taker, or else had temporarily moved away. They were back in Marion for the 1860 census.

("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, page 619, by W. W. Sellers, Esq) Apparently both Richard and Ophelia died during the 1860's. In the Civil War records, there is a mention of a Corporal "R. Turbeville" who was killed at Murfreesboro, but I don't know if that was Richard or someone else. If Marcus Turbeville, age 2, (in the 1870 census) is their son (as opposed to a grandson), then they both must have died ca 1868/70 or thereabouts. For the 1870 census, Richard and Ophelia's unmarried children were residing together in Moody Township, next door to their married brother James W. Turbeville. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. John O. Lane was born ca 1824/25 (per 1860 census) or ca 1817/18 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25) and apparently with them for the 1840 census (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). I'm not sure what his middle initial of "O" stood for, but "Osborne" seems very likely, though I have no direct proof that this is what it was. John O. Lane married Margaret Sweat ca 1840/42 in Marion Dist, SC. Her maiden name is per Sellers, who said she was a daughter of "old George Sweat". John and Margaret and family were on the 1850 census in Marion, just three houses from Margaret's parents George and Mary Sweat.

She was not with her father for the 1860 census, so possibly married or dead by then. She was not mentioned by Sellers, and I haven't found anything else about her, so I suspect she might have died between 1850 and 1860, though she could have married someone.
