James Lane (1790/94-1844) and Martha E --- of Darlington, Marion and Florence Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how, or if, I'm related to the James Lane family. I am very interested in him though. Thanks to Claude Moore for data on Thomas Lane and family, including who (and when) he married, and where he wound up. Thanks to Nell Fronabarger for birth and death dates for Olivia Lane and who she married, and where she moved to. James Lane was born ca 1790/94 in what is now Florence Co, SC, but was then part of Cheraws District, SC (and for many years was part of Darlington District). He is a son of James Lane (1760) and Rachel, as proven by Equity records. James Lane was probably with his parents for the 1800 and 1810 census, though I have not been able to locate them in those years, though they should have been in Darlington District. Perhaps they are listed there, but I have not seen them yet. James Lane married Martha E --- ca 1810/15 in Darlington Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name was. They were listed on the 1820 census in Darlington Dist, SC. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Darlington District, SC pg 71 James Lane 100110-20010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) James LANE (1790/94) s/o James & Rachel 1 Male(s) 16-25 (1794-1804) Son? LANE (1815/20) daughter Elizabeth B. LANE (1816/17) daughter James Lane was listed on the 1824 Marion Dist, SC tax list as "James Lain, Darlington", and charged with 7 cents tax. Apparently he owned land in Marion District at that time, but didn't yet live there. Some time prior to 1830 he did move to Marion District for he was listed there on the 1830 census. He was on the same page with all the Marion Lane's, but this list was alphabetized, so it can't be said that they were near each other, in fact, they were on opposite ends of the county, I believe. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Marion District, SC pg 30 James Lane 1110110000000-2020010000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) James LANE (1790/94) s/o James & Rachel 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810) Son? The records don't always make it easy to tell which was which. Generally speaking, the other two James' were listed as "Sr" and "Jr", and they were father and son, and lived on the other side of the county (in or near modern Dillon County) from the James Lane under study here. See the page for them, for more information: James Lane (c1784). James' mother Rachel, widow of James Lane Sr, made her Will in 1832 in Darlington Dist, SC and named her son "James Lane" and daughter "Martha Pettigrew". The Will was proven 8 Mar 1832. (Darlington Co, SC Will Book 1 page 21). James Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. This list was not alphabetized, and he wasn't listed near any of the Marion Lane families. He was listed between James H. Pearce and Peter Pearce. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion District, SC pg 146 James Lane 1011101000000-0220001000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1790-1800) James LANE (1790/94) s/o James & Rachel 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) James Henning LANE (1815/20) --> gone by 1850 1 Male(s) 15-19 (1820-1825) Samuel A. His death date, and the name of his children are all recorded in Marion Equity Roll # 199. This also confirms that he was son of Rachel Lane who died March 1832. (Roll # 199, "Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", by Lucille Utley, page 63) Martha, widow of James Lane, and a few of their children were still in Marion Dist, SC for the 1850 census. I don't know exactly where this was, but it was probably in what later became Jeffries Township of Marion District, which is part of Florence County now (formed in 1888).

Some members of this family moved to Florida, and some of the daughters remained in the area of Jeffries Township (present Florence County, SC). ChildrenJames and Martha's 10 children are proven by an 1844 Equity case. (Roll # 199, "Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", by Lucille Utley, page 63) Martha A. Lane was born ca 1815/20 in Darlington Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). She was apparently with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). She was not home in 1840, so probably married by then. Equity Records show that Martha A. Lane married Jesse H. Lide sometime before 25 Oct 1844. It looks like they married sometime between 1830 and 1840. Jesse Lide was listed on the 1840 census index in Darlington District. I don't have the enumerations yet. I did not find Jesse and Martha on the 1850 census index. Elizabeth B. Lane was born ca 1816/17 in Darlington Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). She was apparently with her parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). She was not home in 1840, so probably married by then. The equity records mentioned before name Elizabeth B. Lane as wife of Robert Napier. She married Robert Napier sometime between 1830 and ca 1837 in Marion Dist, SC. Robert was born ca 1807/08 in Virginia, a son of Robert Napier. Robert Napier was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC just a few houses from his father-in-law James Lane. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Marion Dist, SC pg 146 Robert Napper 1000010000000-0000100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) Robert NAPIER (1807/08) 1 Male(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) William R. Elizabeth's younger brother Edmund was living with them, though he and Martha Rogers (who was Robert Napier's sister Martha Priscilla Napier Rogers) were listed with a different family number, but the same house number (meaning they were in the same house, but counted separately).

His marital status was given as "Married", but his wife Caroline was not listed for some reason. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet. James H. Lane was born ca 1815/20 in Darlington Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). He was apparently with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and apparently home in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). He was still apparently home in 1840 (age 20-29, born ca 1810/20). James H. Lane was listed on the 1850 census index for neighboring Marlboro Dist, SC. I have no additional data on him yet. Samuel A. Lane was born 23 Jul 1823 (per Nell Fronabarger) in Darlington or Marion Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). He was still apparently home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25). He left the Marion / Florence County area in the 1840's. According to Nell's research, he was in Melrose, Florida when he died in 1868. I have no additional data on him at present. Thomas M. Lane was born ca 1827/28 in Marion Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). He was apparently with his parents for the 1830 census (age 0-4, born ca 1825/30). He was still apparently home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). He was with his widowed mother for the 1850 census. Thomas M. Lane married Martha A. Timmons on 26 Nov 1856 (marriage date was in the Marion Star Newspaper, I believe). She was born ca 1837/38, daughter of Elijah B. and Margaret Timmons. I believe that Nell Fronabarger told me that this family also moved to Florida. They were not in Marion for the 1860 census, so they must have moved between 1856 and 1860. Rachel Louisa Lane was born ca 1825/30 in Marion Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census (age 0-4, born ca 1825/30), and apparently still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). The 1844 equity records listed her name and that she had died before then, so she died between 1840 and 1844. Mary Eleanor Lane was born ca 1825/30 in Marion Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). She was apparently with her parents for the 1830 census (age 0-4, born ca 1825/30), and apparently still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30). The 1844 equity records listed her name and that she had died before then, so she died between 1840 and 1844. Olivia Angeline Lane was born 11 Mar 1831 (per Nell Fronabarger) in Marion Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was home with her widowed mother in 1850, listed as "Angeline" age 19. According to Nell's research, Olivia A. Lane married Normon William McLeod ca 1857. Like several of her siblings, they moved to Melrose, Florida. Amelia J. Lane was born ca 1832/33 in Marion Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). She was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35). She was home with her widowed mother in 1850, listed as "Amelia" age 17. I have no record of her after 1850. Edmund B. Lane was born 9 Sep 1835 (per Nell Fronabarger) in Marion Dist, SC (now Florence Co, SC). He was apparently with her parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40). He was living with his older sister Elizabeth B. Lane Napier in 1850, listed as "Edward" age 14. According to Nell's research, he moved with his siblings to Melrose, Florida, and died there in 1909.
