Joseph Lane (c1770-1850) and Martha --- of Marion and Barnwell Co, SC and Simpson Co, MS[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandnephew of Joseph Lane. Special thanks to Marilyn Lane Sirmon for data shared regarding this family via correspondence and as published in her book. Her book on this family contains a wealth of information regarding Joseph Lane's family, and I'll not even attempt to duplicate her efforts. However, I will include the data that I have found for this family, and highly recommend you find a copy of her book if you want more data. It is out of print, so it can not be purchased any longer, however, I know they have a copy at the Marion Public Library in Marion, SC. The title is "The Ancestry and Known Descendants of Joseph Lane (1770-1850) of Marion County, South Carolina and Simpson County, Mississippi", Marilyn Lane Sirmon, William Arnold Sirmon, Privately published, 1986. Marilyn has her own website at: http://www2.netdoor.com/~sirmon/ Joseph Lane was born ca 1769/70 (per 1850 census) in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC), presumably in the Buck Swamp region. Joseph Lane is a proven son of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford, and was named as such by Sellers in his book, and also named as a son in Osborne Lane's probate records. Joseph Lane seems to have been at home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed as age 16+ (born before 1774). Joseph Lane married Martha "Patsy" --- sometime between 1790 and ca 1798 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). Martha was born ca 1771/72 in SC, presumably the same area as Joseph. I don't know what her maiden name was. Marilyn Sirmon speculates in her book that Martha could be a "Herring" based on several factors, mainly the proximity of the Lane and Herring families in Marion, and that they went to Barnwell Dist, SC together, and later to MS together. Whether this can be effectively proven or not remains to be seen. I completely understand her reasoning on this matter, W. W. Sellers apparently forgot about Joseph Lane when he wrote about the Osborne Lane family, for he did not mention him. It is no wonder, since Joseph moved away from Marion before Sellers was born. On 13 Dec 1797 Joseph Lane and Robert Lucas witnessed a deed from John and Elizabeth Sanders to James Crawford Jr for land on Catfish. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D, page 183, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) On 11 Mar 1798 Joseph Lane and Robert Lucas witnessed another deed from John and Elizabeth Sanders to James Crawford Jr for land on Catfish. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D, page 189, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996) I did not find Joseph Lane listed on the 1800 census, though from what I can tell, they were still in Marion at that time (or should have been). I'm not sure why they weren't listed, though it possible they were living with another family (Martha's parents perhaps?). There were several Herring households in Marion in 1800, but none of them had "extra" people in them that could be Joseph and wife and family. On 8 Jan 1806 Samuel and Fereby Easterling sold 50 acres to Joseph Lane, land on North East side of Buck Swamp bordering Samuel Herring. Witnesses were Niell McEachern and William Allin. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 396, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) There is no date on the deed, but Joseph and Patsy Lane "of Marion Dist" sold the above land to William Bethea. It was recorded next in the same deed book. The deed was proven before Thomas Harllee, QU on 2 Dec 1816. I think the deed was probably from way before 1816 though, probably as far back as 1806. Witnesses were John Lee and James Bailey. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 397, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997) By 1810, Joseph Lane and family had relocated to Barnwell Dist, SC. They were listed on the 1810 census in Barnwell, along with brothers Robert and Osborne Lane (Jr). Another Joseph Lane was listed also, but I don't know who he was. He could be a cousin, or not related at all. Robert and Joseph (our Joseph) were listed next door to each other. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Barnwell Dist, SC pg 90 Joseph Lane 20010-20010 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Joseph LANE (1769/70) s/o Osborne Sr 2 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Shepard LANE (1799/1800) son William Henry LANE (1801/02) son 1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Martha HERRING Lane (1771/72) wife 2 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Mary LANE (1802/03) daughter Charity LANE (1805/06) daughter By 1820, there was only one Joseph Lane in Barnwell Dist, SC, but I don't know if it is our Joseph or that other Joseph from 1810. Besides Joseph, there was his brothers Osborne, Robert and Stephen C. Lane all listed on the same page. Some pages seemed to be in original order, while others were alphabetical, and the Lanes were all listed together with a bunch of other "L" names. Marilyn Lane Sirmon's research shows that Joseph didn't get to Mississippi until ca 1824, so it seems reasonable that he was still in Barnwell in 1820. However, the Joseph Lane entry for 1820 does not match our Joseph's family at all, but does match (except the wife's age) the other Joseph from 1810. Perhaps there were two Josephs listed here in 1820, but only one was indexed. Just for completion, here is the entry: 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Barnwell Dist, SC pg 15 Joseph Lane 101010-02100 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) Joseph LANE (1775/84) s/o ? 1 Male(s) 16-17 (1802-1804) Son? Joseph Lane was listed on the 1830 census in Simpson Co, Mississippi. His son Sheperd Lane was listed also, though several pages away. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Simpson Co, MS pg 179 Joseph Lane 0010000100000-0000101000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 50-59 (1770-1780) Joseph LANE (1769/70) s/o Osborne 1 Male(s) 10-14 (1815-1820) William L. Marilyn believes that they both died around this timeframe, as she found no additional records either. ChildrenAccording to Marilyn's research, Joseph and Martha had at least five children. Two daughters are proven by their marriage records in Lawrence Co, MS (one naming Joseph as her father, who gave his consent, and the other with him as bondsman). Three sons (James, William H. and Sheperd Lane) are unproven, but they were all in close proximity to Joseph Lane in Simpson and Lawrence Co, MS and it seems very likely they were his sons. I have no additional data on them yet other than what Mrs. Sirmon has published, so I'll not repeat that here. Any full birth or death dates included are from Mrs. Sirmon's book.
