Osborne Lane (1784/90-1844) and Mary --- of Marion and Barnwell Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandnephew of Osborne Lane. Osborne Lane was born ca 1790/94 or perhaps ca 1784/90. I haven't been able to reconcile all his census records with each other. In 1810 he was age 26-44 (born ca 1765/84), and in 1820 he was age 26-44 (born ca 1775/94). These two work out to ca 1775/84. However, in 1830 he was age 30-39, or born ca 1790/1800. This doesn't work with both the previous census records. It does work with just 1820, if we ignore the 1810 entry. One of these three entries is in error. I don't yet have his 1840 census entry. Once I get that, I can probably resolve this discrepancy. He was probably born in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Marion County, SC, probably in the Buck Swamp region. Osborne Lane is a proven son of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford, and was named as such in Osborne Lane's probate records as an heir. Sellers did not mention Osborne Jr when he wrote about this family. Apparently he forgot about him (Osborne Jr left Marion County before Sellers was even born, so it is no wonder he forgot). Osborne Lane appears to have been home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed in the age "under 16" category (born 1774/90). By 1800, Osborne was probably with his parents, age 10-15 (born ca 1784/90). By 1810, Osborne Lane Jr had left Marion District, SC and moved across the state to Barnwell District, SC. He also married in the same timeframe (1800/10) to Mary ---. I don't know if he married in Marion, then moved to Barnwell, or moved first, then married in Barnwell. I don't know Mary's maiden name. Osborne Lane was listed on the 1810 census in Barnwell District, SC. His brothers Joseph and Robert Lane were listed also, but several pages away. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Barnwell Dist, SC pg 71 Osborn Lane 10010-20100-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1765-1784) Osborne LANE Jr (1784/90) s/o Osborne 1 Male(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Son? (1800/10) --> gone by 1820 Osborne Lane was still in Barnwell for the 1820 census. For some reason, his wife was listed in the age "45 and up" category (born before 1775), which is way off. This is either a mistake, or perhaps his wife had died and this was a new wife. If so, by 1830 she was back to the approximate same age as before (c1780/90). This makes me believe this entry is just in error. Other records are needed to confirm this though. Although, considering the distribution of the children's births, I think it is possible that Osborne was married twice, and that "Mary" was the second wife. More research is needed though. This census was listed alternately in natural order and alphabetical order, and unfortunately, the "L" section was alphabetical, and all the Lanes listed together, therefore, I can't determine who the neighbors were. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Barnwell Dist, SC pg 15 Osburn Lane 310010-00101 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 26-44 (1775-1794) Osborne LANE Jr (1775/84) s/o Osborne 1 Male(s) 10-15 (1804-1810) Son? (1800/04) Osborne Lane was listed on the 1830 census in Barnwell Dist, SC. He was not near the other Lanes (his brother Robert and an apparent widow Mary). Osborne had two "extra" daughters with him this year, both born in the 1810-20 timeframe, but he had no daughters that age back in 1820. This may mean they are not his children, or they may have just been left out back in 1820 in error. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Barnwell Dist, SC pg 174 Osburn Lane 1121010000000-2011101000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Osborne LANE 1 Male(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Son? (1825/30) Osborne Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Barnwell Dist, SC as "Sr". Several of his sons were also heads of household by this time. ** I don't have the 1840 enumerations yet. Marilyn Lane Sirmon's research shows that Osborne Lane made his Will on 8 Mar 1841 in Barnwell and that the Will was probated in 1844, so he probably died ca 1844. The Will is recorded in Barnwell Co, SC Will Book D page 61. I don't have a copy yet, but she stated that the following were named as heirs: wife Mary, sons Osborn, Andrew Jackson, Joseph and Bryant, daughters Nancy, wife of William Fail, Sarah, Betsey, Martha, and Mary, wife of Joel McMillan. ("The Ancestry and Known Descendants of Joseph Lane (1770-1850) of Marion County, South Carolina and Simpson County, Mississippi", page 36, 37, Marilyn Lane Sirmon, William Arnold Sirmon, Privately published, 1986.) The 1850 census index for Barnwell Dist, SC shows several Lanes, including a "Polly Lane", who could be Osborne's widow ("Polly" is a nickname for "Mary"). I have not yet checked these census records for confirmation. ChildrenOsborne Lane and Mary had 9 children, as named in his Will. Census records seem to show more than nine. Since I don't have birth date data for most of these children yet, I can't match up the names with the census entries, so the list below will seem to be for about twice the number of children they actually had. When I get additional data, I'll weed out the duplications. Unknown Daughter (1800/04). Osborne Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). She was still home in 1820, age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804). She was still home in 1830 also, age 20-29 (born ca 1800/10). I don't have the 1840 census listings yet, so I don't know if still home then, or gone. Unknown Daughter (1800/10). Osborne Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). She was gone by 1820, so possibly married or dead by then (though the entire 1820 listing seems out of whack for this family). Unknown Son (1804/10). Osborne Lane had an apparent son this age with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). He was still home in 1820, age 10-15 (born ca 1804/10). He was gone by 1830, so possibly married or dead by then. Unknown Son (1810/15). Osborne Lane had an apparent son this age with him for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). He was still home in 1830, age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15). I don't have the 1840 census listings yet, so I don't know if he was still home then or not. Unknown Daughter (1810/15). Osborne Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census, age 15-19 (born ca 1810/15). I don't have the 1840 census listings yet, so I don't know if she was still home then or not. However, it should be noted that he had no apparent daughter this age with him back in 1820. That could mean that she was missed in 1820 (for some reason) or that she isn't actually his daughter, but perhaps a niece, or step-daughter or other relative. Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Osborne Lane had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1830 census, age 10-14 (born ca 1815/20). I don't have the 1840 census listings yet, so I don't know if she was still home then or not. Bryant Lane was born in Barnwell Dist, SC. He was named in the Will of his father. I have Bryant's 1850 census record, but I can't quite make out his age. It either says "50" or "30" or "35". The copy I have is too dim to read clearly. Bryant Lane married Winnaford --- before 1838 in Barnwell Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. Bryant Lane listed on the 1840 census index in Barnwell. I don't have the listing yet. Bryant and family moved to Pike Co, AL ca 1841. They are listed there on the 1850 census. ** I don't have this census entry typed up yet. I don't know if they remained in Pike Co, AL or moved on somewhere else. More research is needed. Nancy Lane was born in Barnwell Dist, SC. She was named in the Will of her father.
