Thomas Lane (1770/74-1840/50) and Mary Jones of Marion Co, SC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grandnephew of Thomas Lane.

Thomas Lane was born ca 1770/74 (per an analysis of census records). In 1800 he was age 26-44 (born 1755/74), in 1810 age 26-44 (1765/84), in 1820 he was age 45+ (born before 1775), and 1830 age 50-59 (1770/80) and 1840 age 60-69 (1770/80). These all combine to show he was born between ca 1770 and ca 1774.

I suspect he was born in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Marion County, SC, probably in the Buck Swamp region.

Thomas Lane is a proven son of Osborne Lane and Hepsabeth Crawford, and was named as such by Sellers in his book, and also named as a son in Osborne Lane's probate records as an heir.

Presumably, Thomas Lane grew up in the Buck Swamp area (near present day Latta in the Dillon - Marion County border area), but he seems to have moved down into present Georgetown County at some point before 1800. His brother John was there at that time, so he apparently joined him down there. There is a possibility that the John and Thomas in Georgetown were actually two different people (see John Lane's page for more on who they might be). However, if it is our Thomas Lane down in Georgetown, he did come back to Marion shortly afterwards.

W. W. Sellers said a little bit about Thomas Lane:

"The next son of old Osborne, Thomas, and whom the writer never saw, married and settled, lived and died on a place near Sellers Depot, on the "Short Cut" Railroad, now owned by B. B. Sellers and Mrs. Lucy B. Watson. Thomas Lane had and raised one son only, Bryant Lane, who married, in 1827, Miss Henrietta Dew; when his father died is not known. Since writing the above, the writer has learned that Thomas Lane had another son, named Frederic, who married and settled within 100 feet of where the depot at Sellers now stands; that he afterwards emigrated to Alabama; that his descendants are there now; that some of Frederic's family came out here a few years ago, to visit their relatives, and that subsequently they late Captain Stephen D. Lane went to Alabama to see his relatives in that State; that Frederic's family and descendants are doing well. Thomas Lane may have had a daughter or daughters--if so, where she or they are is unknown." ("A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902, pages 392-393, by W. W. Sellers, Esq)

Thomas Lane appears to have been home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed in the age 16+ category (born before 1774).

On 21 Sep 1794, Thomas Lane and Sarahann Crawford witnessed a deed from John and Elizabeth Sanders to James Crawford Jr. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book D, page 181, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

By 1800, he did not seem to be at home any longer. A Thomas Lane was listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown District, Winyaw County (present Georgetown County). This Thomas was just a few houses from John Lane (his brother) and Peter Lane (1774/84) (don't know who he was). I suspect this was our Thomas and his brother John, though it could be another John and Thomas. Thomas Lane was living alone, unmarried.

Thomas Lane was back in Marion by ca 1801 when he married Mary Jones, daughter of Frederic and Nancy Jones. Mary was born ca 1775/80. Proof of their marriage is found in the Will of Frederick Jones and also in Equity and Probate records of his Estate in Marion Dist, SC (he died ca 1823).

Thomas Lane was listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC between two apparent widows: Ann Smith and Mary Ford. His father Osborne Lane was on the next page, not too many households away.

On 15 Jan 1811 William Whitfield sold Thomas Lane 122 acres. Witnesses were Briant Jones and Elizabeth Whitfield. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G, page 132, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)

Thomas Lane was listed on the 1811 tax list in Marion District, and taxed 70 cents.

On 16 Jan 1812, Noel Taylor sold Thomas Lean 100 acres on the West side of Catfish Swamp on Kelly Branch, bordering George Green, John Deer, Barnabas Watson, John Smith Senr, Deceased, and Fredrick Jones. Witnesses were Isham Watson, Benjamin Harrelson, and Enos Tart, QU. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G, page 134, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)

Thomas Lane was listed on the 1814 tax list in Marion District, and taxed 30 cents.

On 9 Apr 1819, Frederick Jones made his Will in Marion District, SC, naming, among others, his daughter "Mary Lane". The Will was proven 7 Jul 1823. (Probate Roll # 412, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 247).

On 13 Nov 1819, Thomas Lain purchased 100 acres from John and Mary Blue, land bordering John Blackman, Barnaby Watson, and Frederick Jones. Witnesses were: James Robinson and William Blue. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I, page 141, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)

Thomas Lane was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.

Thomas Lain was listed on the 1824 tax list for Marion District and taxed 99 cents.

On 5 Dec 1826, a case was brought to the Court of Equity by Robert C. Jones against Thomas U. Jones concerning the estate of Frederick Jones. The record indicates that Frederick Jones left property to his daughter Mary Lane wife of Thomas Lane and that they sold their interest to Robert C. Jones. (Roll # 138, "Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", page 46, 47, by Lucille Utley)

Thomas Lane was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't determine who his neighbors were.

Thomas Lane was mentioned in several of the probate records for his father Osborne Lane's estate (June - July 1840). (Probate Roll # 462, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume One", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 269, 270).

Both Thomas Lane and Mary Jones Lane apparently died in the 1840 - 1850 timeframe, as they were not found on the 1850 census (at least not in Marion Dist, SC). I found no equity, probate or Will records for Thomas or Mary, but I have by no means exhausted the records in Marion County. There may be much left to discover.

There is a Thomas Lane, age 80 (born ca 1769/70) on the 1850 census in Mobile Co, AL, living alone. He was born in South Carolina. It is quite possible that this is our Thomas Lane, though I have no way to confirm it at this time. His occupation was listed as "Merchant". One strike against this being the same Thomas is that he (the Alabama one) was apparently already there back in 1840, as a "Thomas H. Lane" was on the census index in Mobile Co, AL. Presumably it is the same man still there in 1850.

I don't believe the Thomas in 1850 Mobile Co, AL is the same man as the Thomas from Marion Dist, SC.

Children

Thomas Lane and Mary Jones had a fairly large family, per the early census records. Sellers only noted two children for them, but there were obviously many others that he didn't recall. Unfortunately, most of them are still unknown.

Bryant Lane was born 13 Jan 1801 (per tombstone) in Marion Dist, SC. He was mentioned by Sellers as a son of Thomas Lane. Other than that reference, I've seen no direct proof that they were father and son. Bryant does fit in Thomas household, based on census analysis.

Bryant Lane was presumably named after his uncle Bryant Jones (brother of Mary Jones Lane).

Bryant Lane was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and with them in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804).

Bryant Lane married Henrietta Dew on 18 Dec 1827 (date given by Sellers) in Marion Dist, SC. She was a child of Christopher Dew and Mary Berry. She was born 13 Mar 1811 (per tombstone).

Bryant Lane was listed on the 1830 census in Marion Dist, SC. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

Bryant and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. For some reason, members of a Deas family were residing with them. I don't know how (or if) they are related to each other. They all appear to be the children of Rayford Deas (or Dees) (c1785) and Isabella (c1805), both born NC, but all the children born in Marion Dist, SC. They were with their parents back in 1850. I didn't find their parents listed in 1860, so they must have died, leaving their children orphans, and the Lanes were looking after them for some reason.

Bryant Lane and family were listed on the 1870 census in Marion County, in Kerby Township. This census has many problems, and in this case, the household numbering seems to be off, often making it seem as though infants were the head of household. In the case of the Lanes, it makes it appear as though teenaged laborers are head of the household, though it isn't clear if they should be included with the Lanes or at the end of the previous household. Ann Dew, age 52 is residing with them also, and also listed before them. She must be a relative of Henrietta's, but I don't know how they are related.

Bryant Lane died on 11 Sep 1878 and Henrietta on 18 Apr 1880. They are buried at the Bethesda Southern Methodist Church Cemetery (online at Marion GenWeb pages).

In 1880, their unmarried daughter Kesiah was listed as head of household with brother Bryant Lane (who was idiotic) with her, though he is mistakenly listed as her "son".

Frederick Lane was mentioned by Sellers as a son of Thomas Lane, and that he went to Alabama. So far I have not been able to find any record of him.

Unknown Son (1800/04). Thomas Lane apparently had a son this age. He was with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and with him still in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804). He was no longer with Thomas by the 1830 census, so he possibly had married or died by then.

This could be the Fredrick Lane mentioned by Sellers (or perhaps the younger unknown son was him).

There were no new Lane households in 1830 (or 1840) Marion that could be this son of Thomas Lane. If he didn't die in the 1820's, then he must have moved away from Marion County. (Sellers said that Fredrick Lane moved to Alabama).

Unknown Daughter (1800/04). Thomas Lane apparently had a daughter this age. She was with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and with him still in 1820 (age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804). She was no longer with Thomas by the 1830 census, so she possibly had married or died by then.

Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Thomas Lane apparently had a daughter this age. She was with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and with him still in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10). She was no longer with Thomas by the 1830 census, so she possibly had married or died by then.

She was with him for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and with him still in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10) and still home in 1830 (age 20-29, born ca 1800/10). She was no longer with Thomas by the 1840 census, so she possibly had married or died by then.

I don't know who this might have been. He either died in the 1830/40 timeframe, or he moved away from Marion County.
