William C. Lane (c1820) and Elizabeth --- and Olivia Stephens of Marion Co, SC[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) don't know how, or if, I'm related to the William C. Lane family. I am very interested in him though. William Lane was born ca 1819/20 in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know what part of the county he was born in. In later years he lived in Marion Township. I don't know what his middle initial of "C" stood for, but "Crawford" is certainly a strong possibility, but I have no direct proof of that. I don't know who his parents are, but there seem to be only two strong suspects, Alexander Lane, son of old Osborne had a son about this age who is unidentified and so did John Lane, eldest son of Osborne. These two men are the prime suspects as father of both Benjamin Lane and William C. Lane, both of whom where the same age, so I suspect one is Alexander's son, the other is John's. I'm leaning more toward John as William's father, but have no conclusive proof. According to W.W. Sellers in his History of Marion County, South Carolina, 1902, page 395, he thought that William Lane was a son of old Osborne Lane (but this is incorrect). Sellers wrote about William C. Lane, but mistakenly referred to him as a son of old Osborne Lane (who was actually his grandfather). He wrote a little bit about William's family:
It is funny that W.W. Sellers referred to William Lane as an "old man", as he was actually slightly younger than Sellers! I think this goes to show that Sellers knew very little of this family, and he was certainly wrong about William Lane being a son of old Osborne Lane. The three sons that Sellers mentioned are indeed sons of the William Lane under study here, so we know he was referring to this same family. For the 1820 census, assuming he was born already, William C. Lane would have been one year old or less, so if enumerated with his parents, he would be in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). Thomas Lane (1770/74) had an unidentified son this age, however in 1830 that same apparent son was born ca 1810/15 which doesn't quite work for William. Alexander Lane (1787) had an apparent son this age in 1820. John Lane (1765/70) had an apparent son this age also. For the 1830 census, William would have been about 10 years old, so probably enumerated in either the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20) or possibly in the 5-9 age group (born ca 1820/25). Alexander Lane (1787) had an apparent son this age (ca 1815/20) in 1830. John Lane (1765/70) had an apparent son this age also (ca 1815/20). And in both cases, John and Alexander's apparent sons were gone by 1840, which fits for William, since he married in the 1830's. Unfortunately I have not found anything to narrow the choice or parents down any further than Alexander or John. I am sure that one of them must be William's father. For various reason (all circumstantial), I suspect John Lane is a more likely candidate for William's father. Sometime prior to 1838 William C. Lane married Elizabeth --- in Marion Dist, SC. She was born ca 1819/20 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. William Lane was listed on the 1840 census in Marion Dist, SC. He was listed between Emanuel Johnson and James Blackman. As best as I can determine, this was in the area in or near present Moody Township, but close to (or within) present Marion Township. Lane was baptized on 10 Aug 1854 into the church. (Pee Dee Queue Vol XXIII, No 3, May - Jun 1999) According to the Antioch Baptist church minutes, Elizabeth Lane died April 1857. Presumably that record is referring to the same Elizabeth, wife of William C. Lane. She did die during the 1850/60 timeframe, so it fits. (Pee Dee Queue Vol XXIII, No 3, May - Jun 1999) William C. Lane married Olivia Stephens, circa 1857/1859. She was born Nov 1840 in Marion Dist, SC. I've had her maiden name for many years, and no longer recall where I got it from, nor what the proof of it is. However, there was an "Oliff" Stephens in the 1850 census near William Lane's household, with her parents Job and Mary Stephens. Job Stephens lived next to William C. Lane in 1860. William Lane and family were listed on the 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. Many of their neighbors were the same as in 1850, so they were probably still in present Marion Township. Olivia's age was given wrong in this census, but later census records get it right (or closer to right).

Lane (May 1850), her brother, so it seems likely that either one of their dates is in error (since he was not listed in 1850), or that "Sarah" age 1 month, was actually Hansford, but recorded incorrectly for some reason.
