John Parker Moore (c1765) and Millie Redmond of VA, Carter Co, TN, Buncombe, Haywood and Macon Co, NC

[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]

I (Marty Grant) am not related to John Parker Moore as far as I know. There is a fairly good chance that he is related to my ancestor Burton Moore (c1756). Many have speculated that they were brothers, but I don't think so, but they could be closely related.

I've had several correspondents over the years who have shared data with me on this family. I'll have to locate all their names to list them here with a "thanks".

John Parker Moore was born ca 1764/65 (per 1850 census), in Virginia (per 1850 census). Other researchers list him as having been born in Halifax County, Virginia, but I don't know what the source for that info is. There certainly were Moores in that county. John's middle name of "Parker" may be indicative of a relationship to the Parker family, though not necessarily.

John Parker Moore's parents are unknown. I know of no strong suspects either. Since I don't know for sure where he originated (other than "Virginia"), it may be impossible to find his parents. There are several potential siblings for him, but none proven.

Lawrence Wood (deceased) once told me that he thought that John had two sisters who also wound up in Macon County, namely Nancy Moore Franks (1760/65) wife of Richard Franks, and Mary Moore Carroll (c1770), wife of William Carroll. Neither of these are (as far as I know) proven to be his siblings, nor proven to be Moores. There were other Moores around that seem to be connected to John, but no proof that they were related. However, their is ample evidence to show they were associated (neighbors, witnessed each others deeds, children intermarried, etc.). These will be discussed as I go along.

There is a John Moore listed on the 1787 state census in Halifax County, Virginia, but I don't think it is John Parker Moore, but it could be.

John Parker Moore moved to what is now Carter County, Tennessee sometime before 1790. At that time Carter County was still part of Washington County, and Tennessee was not yet a state. Prior to 1790, this was part of North Carolina, but in 1790 it became the Territory South of the Ohio River (until 1796 when Tennessee was admitted as a state).

John was probably not yet married by the time of the 1790 census, but considering he was about 25 then, he could have been listed as head of household. Unfortunately both the 1790 census for Tennessee is lost.

John Parker Moore was listed on the 1790 Washington County tax list. He was taxed for 1 poll (himself) and no land. He was the only Moore listed there at that time.

Sometime before ca 1792, John P. Moore married Millie Redmond, presumably in Washington (now Carter) Co, TN. I have never seen proof of her maiden name, but other researchers show it as "Redmond". If she is a Redmond, I don't know who her parents were, but she is probably a sister to Stephen Redmond who also lived there at that time and was about the same age as her. He married Susannah Stewart there in 1792. (I'm also a Stewart researcher). Millie was born ca 1760/70 (per 1830 census). Other researchers show her born in Charlotte Co, VA. (There was a Thomas Redmond in Charlotte Co, VA in 1782).

John Parker Moore was listed on the 1794 Washington County tax list. He was taxed for 1 poll (himself) and no land.

In 1796, Carter County was formed from the portion of Washington County where the Moores resided.

John Parker Moor was listed on the 1796 Carter County tax list.

P. John Moore was listed on the 1798 Carter County tax list.

They should have been listed on the 1800 census in Carter County, but unfortunately the 1800 census is lost for Tennessee.

I have not done a thorough search of Washington and Carter County records, but there may be much valuable data on this family waiting to be found there.

Between ca 1804 and ca 1807, John P. Moore and family moved into neighboring Buncombe County, North Carolina.  Stephen Redmond and family made the same move roughly at the same time. I don't know precisely what part of Buncombe they settled in, for at that time, Buncombe was quite large and included many present day counties as well. My guess is, and I could be entirely wrong, that they lived in the part of Buncombe that later became Madison County (in 1851).

I have not done much research on this family in Buncombe County. There may be deeds and other pertinent records for John P. Moore in that county.

I have not yet been able to locate John P. Moore and family on the 1810 census. I thought they should have been in Buncombe County, but did not find them.  There is a "John Moore" listed, but his household only consisted of him. This could be the same family, and perhaps the census taker didn't find them home, so left the enumerations blank, except for "guestimating" John's age. Then again, this could be someone else.

By 1820, the family had moved again, into neighboring Haywood County. I'm not sure what section of Haywood they lived in, possibly already in the section that soon became Macon County.

Beginning in 1826, John P. Moore and Millie Moore were listed as members of the First Baptist Church. He  was listed on the register for 1826, 1827, 1828, 1829, 1830, 1831, and 1832, but Millie was only listed in 1826 and 1827 and was excused (or excluded?) on 18 Aug 1827. (First Baptist Church Minutes, Macon Co, NC from Microfilm, North Carolina Archives).

They were two John Moores listed, one as "B. John" and the other just as "John". The plain "John" is John Parker Moore, I believe. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were, nor where they might have been living exactly.

On 8 Aug 1821, Tavner B. Moore of Haywood (John's son) deeded 111 acres on Ellijay Creek to John P. Moore. Witnessed by Zachariah Peak (John's son-in-law). This deed may have been a mortgage instead of a regular deed, I'm not sure. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book A page 213 from "Records of Old Macon County, N.C. 1829-1850" compiled by Barbara Sears McRae, 1991. * Note: All deeds mentioned hereafter from books "A" through "E" are taken from this book.)

In 1828 a petition was filed by residents of southwestern Haywood County requesting the formation of a new county (Macon), and John P. Moore was listed on the petition. He enumerated his family as having 1 male over 21 (himself), 1 male under 21 (son Isaac), and 1 female (wife Millie).

During the years of his life in Macon County, John P. Moore was not the only "John Moore" there, so there could be some confusion in which record applies to whom, but generally he used his middle initial on everything, thus avoiding confusion.

They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County. He was not listed near any other Moores.

In March 1831 Court, John P. Moore and others (including my uncle Presley T. Moore) were listed as jurors. (Macon Co, NC Superior Court Minutes March 1829 - April 1832).

Sometime in the 1830's, John and wife moved to neighboring Rabun County, Georgia for a short time. This probably happened on or after 3 Nov 1832, for on that date, John P. Moore was excused (or was it excluded?) from the First Baptist Church. (First Baptist Church Minutes, Macon Co, NC from Microfilm, North Carolina Archives).

On 9 Jun 1838, John P. Moore of Rabun Co, GA sold to Abner Moore of Macon (his son), 58 acres. Witnessed by Isaac C. Moore (son). (Macon Co, NC Deed Book B page 668)

There were other Moore there, but I don't know if they were related or not. They were listed in Rabun for the 1840 census. He was two houses from Jesse Carter (1784) (my ancestor, but not related to the Moores). Mrs. Moore's age in 1840 is younger than I'd expect, so this could mean that this was not Millie, but a second wife instead, or just a typical census problem.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

Millie Redmond Moore apparently died in the 1840's, though whether in Rabun Co, GA or back in Macon Co, NC I can't say.

John Moore was back in Macon by 1846, for on 2 Mar 1846, John P. Moore of Macon, sold Thomas M. Angel, 36 acres on Ellijay Creek. Witnessed by Abraham Moore (son) and Andrew J. Moore (Abraham's son). John P. Moore signed with a mark. (Macon Co, NC Deed Book E page 87)

John was listed on the 1850 census with his son Abraham's family.

John Parker Moore apparently died in Macon County sometime before 1860.

Children

According to other researchers, John Parker Moore and Millie Redmond had 8 children, and of these, I have birth dates for all. I don't know the proof for any of these children except Abraham (whom John was living with in 1850). Someone may have a family bible or old family record that outlines this family, but I've not seen it. However, it seems to me that this list is accurate, at least as far as I can tell based on circumstantial evidence.

Taverner B. Moore (1793)

Mary Moore (1795)

Sarah Ann Moore (1798)

Abner S. Moore (1801)

Rachel R. Moore (1804)

Abraham Moore (1807)

Isaac N. Moore (1809)

Jacob Moore (1812)

Taverner B. Moore was born 13 Jul 1793 (source?) in Washington (now Carter) Co, TN. I do not know what proof there is that Taverner is John Parker Moore's son, but there was at least one deed from Taverner to John, and there were other associations.

Taverner B. Moore married Catherine Davis before ca 1820. See their own page for additional information.

Mary Moore was born 11 Dec 1795 (source?) in Washington (now Carter) Co, TN (assumed). I do not know what proof there is that she is John Parker Moore's daughter

She may have been home with her parents for the 1800 census, but that census is lost for Tennessee. She may also have been home for the 1810 census, but I have not yet found her parents that year.

According to other researchers, she married Solomon Carroll. I have found more than one Solomon with a wife named "Mary", or else I've found several references to the same couple that seem contradictory, I'm not sure which is the case.

In 1810 I found no Solomon Carroll listings (including alternate spellings), nor any in 1820.

In 1830 there was a Solomon Carroll (1800/10) in Macon County, NC. His wife was in the same age group, so that does not match Mary Moore (1795), though it could just be a census error.

This same Solomon Carroll was still in Macon County in 1840, and his apparent wife was still in the 1800-1810 age group.

I'm not sure if this is correct about Mary Moore marrying Solomon Carroll. If there is evidence for it, I haven't seen it yet.

Sarah Ann Moore was born 30 Jan 1798 (source?) in Carter Co, TN (assumed). I do not know what proof there is that she is John Parker Moore's daughter

She may have been home with her parents for the 1800 census, but that census is lost for Tennessee. She may also have been home for the 1810 census, but I have not yet found her parents that year.

Sometime before ca 1818, Sarah married Zachariah Peek in Buncombe Co, NC. According to other researchers, he was a son of William Peek and Elizabeth Shockley.

They were listed on the 1820 census in Buncombe County.

1 Female(s) 0-9 (1810-1820)	Rachel PEEK (1819/20) daughter

By 1830 they were in Macon County. They were listed on that census next door to brother-in-law Jesse Kirby.

					Judith M. PEEK (1834/35) daughter

Zachariah Peak died on 14 Jan 1845, and Sarah Ann Moore Peak died on 2 May 1848.

Abner S. Moore was born 20 Jul 1801 (source?) in Carter Co, TN. I do not know what proof there is that Abner is John Parker Moore's son, but there is associations between the two.

Abner S. Moore married Annie Cook before ca 1823, and later moved to neighboring Cherokee (now Clay) Co, NC. See their own page for additional information.

Rachel R. Moore was born 17 Feb 1804 (source?) in Tennessee (per 1850 census), presumably Carter Co, TN, or Buncombe Co, NC per 1860 census. I do not know what proof there is that she is John Parker Moore's daughter.

She may have been home with her parents for the 1810 census, but I have not yet found her parents that year.

She seems to have been home with them in 1820 in Haywood County, aged 10-15 (born ca 1804/10), but gone by 1830.

She married Jesse Kirby (or Kerby) in the 1820's in Haywood (now Macon) Co, NC. No marriage record was found, so I don't know what proof there is of this marriage.

They were listed on the 1830 census in Macon County, next door to brother-in-law Zachariah Peak.

They were still in Cherokee for the 1860 census. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

I have no additional data on them, except that they supposedly went to Coryell Co, TX at some point.

Abraham Moore was born 27 Dec 1807 (source?) in Buncombe County, NC (per 1850 and 1860 census). The only proof I've found of Abraham's connection to John is that John was living with him in 1850. That seems to suggest they were father and son.

Abraham Moore married Lydia Stewart ca 1826 in Haywood (now Macon) Co, NC. See their own page for additional information.

Isaac N. Moore was born 4 Apr 1809 (source?) in Buncombe County, NC (per 1860 census). I do not know what proof there is that Isaac is John Parker Moore's son. "Isaac C. Moore" witnessed one of John's deeds in Macon, and he was associated with other members of John's family.

Isaac N. Moore married Rachel Bryson in 1839, and moved to neighboring Cherokee County, NC. See their own page for additional information.

Jacob Moore was born 3 May 1812 (source?) presumably in Buncombe or perhaps Haywood County, NC. I do not know what proof there is that Jacob is John Parker Moore's son.

Jacob seems to have been home with his parents for the 1820 census, aged "under 10" (born ca 1810/20), but gone by 1830. I have not been able to find any additional information on Jacob.

There was a Jacob Moose in neighboring Cherokee County. He is the same age, and I originally thought he was this Jacob, not realizing that his name was Moose, not Moore (looks the same on the census).
