Welcome to my Patterson web pages! I am interested in all the Pattersons in Western North Carolina, Upper West South Carolina, Northern Georgia and Eastern Tennessee  through ca 1850. My own Pattersons came to Western North Carolina in the mid 1700's probably from Pennsylvania or Virginia (or both). They settled first in Tryon (now Rutherford) Co, NC, moving over to what was then Buncombe Co, NC for awhile. They lived in the part of Buncombe that was erroneously claimed as Walton Co, GA for awhile. That area later became Henderson Co, NC and finally Transylvania Co, NC. My Pattersons moved long before those county changes happened, moving to nearby Macon Co, NC for awhile, then to neighboring Union Co, GA for many years. Some of the family moved to Huerfano Co, CO in the 1860's while others moved to Swain Co, NC at the same time:

Matthew Patterson (died after 1772) of Tryon (now Rutherford) Co, NC
- Matthew Patterson (Jr) (bef 1749-c1815) of Rutherford and Buncombe Co, NC
-- Samuel Patterson (c1770-c1825) and Elizabeth of Buncombe (now Transylvania) Co, NC
--- Samuel Patterson (1805-1879) and Jane Moore of NC, GA and Colorado
----- Carroll Alonso Patterson (1880-1922) of Swain Co, NC

I have no solid proof that the Matthew Sr was father of Matthew Jr though it seems likely. The same is true for Samuel Sr and Samuel Jr. No definitive proof they are father and son, but it seems likely.

I am also interested in all other Pattersons in the region whether related to me or not (1700's through ca 1850). Check them out on my Documented Family Pages.

Patterson DNA Study - Use DNA testing to break down your genealogical brick walls and find out which genetic branch of the family you are part of. Click link for details. We need male Pattersons with Western NC (and nearby) roots to participate! Pattersons should also join the Clan McLaren project as the Pattersons are a Sept of that clan.
