John Pemberton (1742) and Elizabeth Delaney of Culpeper Co, VA and Sullivan Co, TN[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home] I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of John Pemberton and Elizabeth Delaney. First of all, I’d like to thank Marie Mills for sharing a lot of Pemberton data with me many years ago when I first started researching this family. That data is the foundation of all of my research since then. I’d also like to thank Betty Pierce and others for data shared. John Pemberton was born 12 Oct 1742 per his tombstone. (An earlier transcription of that cemetery showed 19 Oct 1749 as his birth). Teri Tillman recently visited this cemetery and confirms 12 Oct 1742 as the correct birth date for John Pemberton. Some researchers (from years ago) showed that John was born in Lancastershire, England, but I don’t know what the source for that is. Recently Elizabeth Bailey found some Baptismal records from Lancashire County, England in the Urswick Parish Register that shows a "John Pemberton" baptized on 16 Oct 1742, a son of Richard Pemberton, Berdsea (or Bardsea). She also found in the same records a marriage for Richard Pemberton, Bardsea, Sailmaker and Ann Atkinson dated 10 Feb 1739/40. Now it seems likely that Richard and Ann (Atkinson) Pemberton are the parents of the John who was baptized on the 16th. The question remains whether this was our John Pemberton or not, but it certainly could be. Our John would have been 4 days old at that point in time. A follow up question is whether or not "Lancastershire" and "Lancashire" are the same place. I’ve done no English genealogical or historical research, so I’m not very familiar with English place names. Though his parents are not known (though Richard and Ann are certainly strong candidates), it is very likely that John Pemberton was a brother to George Pemberton and William Pemberton. Their relationship to each other is unproven, but they are related without doubt. The proof of their connection is this. John Pemberton’s daughter Sarah, married George Pemberton’s son Thomas. That shows that John and George were related somehow. Secondly, John Pemberton’s son Staunton Pemberton was witness to William Pemberton’s Will in Washington Co, VA. John, When William's widow Nancy made her Will in 1818, she named Jonathan King as Executor. Jonathan was son-in-law of John Pemberton. George and William Pemberton were all about the same age as John, and they all clearly knew each other, so it does seem likely they were brothers or somehow closely related. If John Pemberton was actually born in England, then he was a fairly "late" immigrant to America, coming sometime just before the Revolutionary War. There were many Pembertons in Virginia (and New England also) in the early 1700's, so I’ve always wondered if he was actually born in England or if perhaps he was really born somewhere in Virginia instead. The earliest record we have for John Pemberton is in Culpeper County Virginia in 1768 when he purchased property from Stephen Souther. I’m sure this is the same John Pemberton because this is the county where his wife Elizabeth Delaney was from. The deed was dated 8 Aug 1768 per the Index. I have not seen the actual deed, so I don’t know the details. (Culpeper Co, VA Deed Book E page 561, shared by Betty Pierce) John Pemberton married Elizabeth Delaney before 1766 probably in Culpeper County, Virginia. For years, researchers listed John’s wife as Elizabeth Stanton (or "Staunton"), and although no one ever presented any evidence, it was generally accepted as correct, because they did name one of their sons "Staunton Pemberton". A year or so ago my cousin Jeff George sent me copies of the Charles N. George (1790) letters that he had in his possession. Several of those letters were between Charles N. George and General John R. Delaney (1799-1879) of Sullivan Co, TN. I had seen the General’s name before as he had filed an affidavit on behalf of Charles’ widow Celia Smith George for her Widow’s Pension application for Charles’ War of 1812 service. I assumed that Delaney and George had served together in the War of 1812, until I realized that he was not old enough to have served in that war. After reading several of the letters from General Delaney I finally noticed one he signed as "your cousin". I was shocked, for I had never come across the Delaney name in relation to my George family, and immediately set out to determine how the Delaneys could possibly be cousins to the Georges. I knew very little about John R. Delaney so I looked him up and found that his parents were William Delaney (1755-1831) and Nancy Rodes. I saw no connection here either. I then found that William Delaney had a sister named Elizabeth Delaney who married a John Pemberton, and that none of the Delaney researchers had any additional information on John Pemberton and Elizabeth after marriage, but that Elizabeth Delaney was born 28 Jan 1746. Our Elizabeth Pemberton was born 27 Jan 1746 per her tombstone! I realized the mystery was solved. Gen. John R. Delaney was a 1st cousin to Charles N. George’s mother Elizabeth Pemberton George, daughter of John Pemberton and Elizabeth Delaney. As far as I knew, no one else had found this before, so I immediately contacted several of my George and Pemberton cousins and told them about it, and all agreed that my theory was correct, and they began to dig into it some more and found lots of Delaney data, including the fact that Elizabeth Delaney (wife of John Pemberton) was a daughter of John Delaney and Frances Staunton (thus explaining the name Staunton Pemberton). So after years of mistakenly thinking John Pemberton’s wife was a Stanton, we now know she was Elizabeth Delaney, born either on 27 Jan 1746 (per tombstone) or 26 Jan 1746 (per Delaney records, which I think is from a Family Bible, though I have not seen the record). Elizabeth was born in Virginia, probably in Orange County (but I’m not sure of that). Elizabeth was a daughter of John Delaney (1718-1803) and Frances Stanton. This is proven by the Will of her father dated 28 Apr 1800 when he named his heirs including daughter "Elizabeth Pemberton". On 15 Mar 1773, Jonathen Cowherd, John Delany and John Pemberton appraised the estate of Richard Breeding alias Cross, deceased. (Culpeper Co, VA Estates, shared by Betty Pierce).Sometime in the late 1770's or at least by ca 1781, John Pemberton and family (along with some of the Delaneys) moved down to Sullivan County, North Carolina (now Tennessee) and settled there. It is probable that John Pemberton was in several of the militia units called up during the numerous Indian troubles, but I haven’t found any records proving that. John Pemberton was involved in the Revolutionary War. He served with the "Over the Mountain Men" in the Battle Of Kings Mountain (October 1780). At this time, John Pemberton was a Captain. After the war he obtained the rank of Colonel by 1788. On 10 Oct 1784, John Pemberton received a North Carolina Land Grant of 306 acres in Sullivan County on Little Sinking Creek adjoining John Cawood (Caywood), Robert Thompson, John Shelby, William Thomas, Thomas Gibson, William Delaney (his brother-in-law) and his own land. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 1 page 224)In 1788 Colonel Pemberton was involved with the dispute between John Tipton and John Sevier when Sevier laid siege to Tipton's home. John Pemberton came to the defense of Tipton. Details of this are recorded in "Historic Sullivan. A History of Sullivan County, Tennessee with brief Biographies of the Makers of History" by Oliver Taylor, 1909. It is also recorded in "Annals of Tennessee" by J. G. M. Ramsey, 1853. Both books state that John Pemberton was a Colonel at that time (1788). John would probably have been listed on the 1790 census, but unfortunately this census was lost for Tennessee. In 1790, North Carolina ceded the western territories to the United States and Sullivan County became part of "The Territory South of the Ohio River" until 1796 when Tennessee was admitted as a state. John Pemberton was listed on the 1796 tax list in Sullivan County, and taxed for 606 acres, 3 whites, and 1 black. The three whites were probably himself, his son James (1767) and son Thomas (1775). John was listed on the 1797 tax list in Sullivan County. He was taxed for 505 acres (he must have parted with 101 acres since 1796). He was also taxed for 3 whites and 3 blacks. John Pemberton would probably have been listed on the 1800 census in Sullivan County, but unfortunately this census record was lost for Tennessee. On 28 Apr 1800, John Delaney made his Will in Madison County, Virginia and named his wife Frances and children including Elizabeth Pemberton. John would probably have been listed on the 1810 census in Sullivan County, but unfortunately this census record was lost for Tennessee. John Pemberton was listed on an 1812 tax list for Sullivan County in Captain Harvey King’s Company. He was taxed for 306 acres, and 0 whites and 3 blacks. No whites were taxable because he was apparently over the taxable age and was exempt. Elizabeth Delaney Pemberton died on 7 Aug 1812 (per tombstone) in Sullivan County. John Pemberton died on 25 Oct 1813 (per tombstone) in Sullivan County. John and Elizabeth are buried at the Pemberton Cemetery. An old cemetery survey referred to it as the "Pemberton/Hawkins/Grant" Cemetery. Teri Tillman recently visited the cemetery and recorded the information on the stones: "In Memory of John Pemberton Born Oct 12, 1742, died Oct 25, 1813". And there is also a newer stone for him that has the same dates and mentions he was a Captain at Kings Mountain. Elizabeth’s stone says "In Memory of Elizabeth Pemberton Born Jan 27 1746, died Aug 7, 1812". ChildrenJohn Pemberton may have left a Will, or there may have been Estate records, but all of that would have been lost when the Sullivan County Court house burned in the Civil War. Fortunately for us, there were extensive records pertaining to the estates of some of John’s unmarried sons. These records name numerous heirs and are very valuable for sorting out the Pemberton family. These records, and other sources show that John and Elizabeth had ten children. Sarah "Sally" Pemberton (1765/70) William Pemberton was born 8 Jul 1766 (source?), presumably in Culpeper Co, VA. He is a proven son of John Pemberton and was named as a brother to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. William was dead at that time, but he was mentioned as was his children. William Pemberton married Winnifred --- before 1804, and lived in Knox and Whitley County, Kentucky. See his own page for additional information. James Pemberton was born 16 Dec 1767 (per tombstone) presumably in Culpeper Co, VA. I have not seen any direct evidence that he was John and Elizabeth's son, but it seems highly likely, for he did live there next to them, and was buried in the same cemetery. I have no record of James Pemberton prior to his 1812 tax list entry. He might have been listed on the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census records, though all of those were lost for Tennessee. James Pemberton was listed on the 1812 Tax list in Sullivan Co, TN in Captain Harvey King's Company, and taxed for 1 white (himself), 0 blacks, and no land. James Pemberton died on 25 Nov 1815 (per tombstone) in Sullivan County and is buried at the Pemberton Cemetery near his parents. I don't know if James was ever married, but it is possible. However, he was not named in the division records of his brothers Ezekiel and Thomas Pemberton, so even if he had married, he apparently had no children. Sarah "Sally" Pemberton was born ca 1765/70 (per census analysis), presumably in Culpeper Co, VA. She is a proven daughter of John Pemberton and was named as a sister to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. She was dead at that time, but she was mentioned and so were her children and grandchildren. Sarah Pemberton married Thomas Pemberton (1760/65) a son of George and Sarah (---) Pemberton, and probably was Sarah's 1st cousin. They moved to Adair County, Kentucky. See their own page for additional information. Elizabeth Pemberton was born 13 Jul 1772 (per tombstone), presumably in Culpeper Co, VA. She is a proven daughter of John Pemberton and was named as a sister to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. She was dead at that time, but she was mentioned and so were her children. Elizabeth Pemberton married James Jordan George ca 1788 in Sullivan Co, TN. They had seven children, and she apparently died in (or due to complications of) childbirth on 4 Jun 1802 (per tombstone) in Sullivan County, Tennessee. She is buried near her parents at the Pemberton Cemetery. See their own page for additional information. Thomas Pemberton was born 29 Jan 1775 (per tombstone) presumably in Culpeper Co, VA. He is a proven sibling to the other Pembertons based on his own land divisions after his death. I have no record of Thomas Pemberton prior to his 1812 tax list entry. He might have been listed on the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census records, though all of those were lost for Tennessee. Thomas Pemberton was listed on the 1812 Tax list in Sullivan Co, TN in Captain Harvey King's Company, and taxed for 1 white (himself), 0 blacks, and no land. He may have been listed on the 1820 census, but that census was lost for Eastern Tennessee, including Sullivan County. Thomas was listed on the 1830 census in Sullivan County and had several other people with him, relationship unknown. He never married, so these could be siblings and nieces and nephews. One of the other men is probably his brother Ezekiel. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Sullivan Co, TN pg 317 Thomas Pemberton 2000011100000-0100100000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 50-59 (1770-1780) Thomas PEMBERTON (1775) 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1780-1790) Ezekiel PEMBERTON (1781) brother 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Nephew? He is buried at the Pemberton Cemetery near his parents. His death date was given both ways (the 1st and 7th) on the cemetery survey. I don't know which is correct. Thomas Pemberton died leaving no widow or children, and he had considerable amounts of land. There were some excellent records pertaining to the division of this land that named his brothers and sisters (many of whom were dead by then, so their children were named, and in some cases, their grandchildren). Stanton Pemberton was born ca 1778 (source?), presumably in Culpeper Co, VA. He is a proven son of John Pemberton and was named as a brother to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. He was dead at that time, but he was mentioned and so were his children. Stanton Pemberton married Sarah King and moved to neighboring Washington Co, VA for awhile, later moving to Coles County, Illinois. See his own page for additional information. Ezekiel Pemberton was born 1 Aug 1781 (per tombstone) in Sullivan Co, TN. He is a proven son of John Pemberton and was named as a brother to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. He was dead at that time, but he was mentioned. Ezekiel Pemberton never married. I have no records on him (yet) prior to his entry on the 1850 census. He was probably with his parents for the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census, and with a sibling in 1820, but unfortunately those census records are lost for Tennessee (and 1820 lost for eastern Tennessee). He was not listed in 1830, but I think he was probably with his brother Thomas Pemberton who did have an "extra" male with him that year, aged 40-49 (born ca 1780/90). The same is true in 1840, and I think that Ezekiel is with Thomas then as well, aged 50-59 (born ca 1780/90). On 4 Feb 1850, Charles N. George (Ezekiel's nephew) sold him some property. I don't have the details. (Sullivan Co, TN Deed Book 19 page 291). In 1850, Ezekiel is still in Sullivan County, Tennessee, and listed as head of household. His grand nephew William Odell is living with him.

He apparently left a Will (destroyed with most of the other Sullivan County records in the Civil War) but for some reason it was disputed, and litigation ensued, which of course provides a valuable genealogical record. Dianah Pemberton was born ca 1782/83 (per 1850 census), in Sullivan Co, TN. She is a proven daughter of John Pemberton and was named as a sister to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. She was probably with her parents for the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census, though those records are lost. Dianah married Samuel Snapp sometime before 1815, presumably in Sullivan County. He was born ca 1780/81 (per 1850 census) somewhere in Virginia (per 1850 census). He may be from Sullivan also, for there were other Snapp families there. The 1820 census is lost for Eastern Tennessee including Sullivan County. I did not find Samuel Snapp listed on the 1830 census. There was one in Morgan County, Tennessee, but I don't know if that is the same man or not, as that is several counties west of Sullivan. By 1840, Samuel and Dianah had moved to nearby Greene County, Tennessee and were listed on the 1840 census there. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Greene Co, TN pg 11 Samuel Snapp 0001101000000-0000000100000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 40-49 (1790-1800) Samuel SNAPP (1780/81) 1 Male(s) 20-29 (1810-1820) Samuel E. Benjamin Pemberton was born 7 Feb 1786 (per tombstone), in Sullivan Co, TN. He is a proven son of John Pemberton and was named as a brother to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. Benjamin married Marianna Sharp (source?) sometime in either Sullivan Co, TN or neighboring Washington Co, VA. I don't have any dates for her, nor their marriage date. She died at some point, and by 1828 Benjamin married Barbara Buchanan Dryden. See their own page for additional information. Nancy Pemberton was born 11 Mar 1788 (source?), in Sullivan Co, TN. She is a proven daughter of John Pemberton and was named as a sister to Thomas Pemberton in Thomas' Estate division. Nancy was probably home with her parents in 1790, 1800 and 1810 census, but those records are lost. Nancy married Jonathan King sometime before 1820. He was born ca 1791/92 in Virginia. They lived in Washington Co, VA after marriage. Jonathan King was named as executor of the Will of Nancy Pemberton (widow of William Pemberton, Uncle-in-law to King). The Will was dated 7 Oct 1818 in Washington Co, VA. I did not find them on the 1820 census. They may have been in Sullivan that year, and that census is lost. They were listed on the 1830 census in Washington Co, VA. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Washington Co, VA pg 261 Jonathan King 1100010000000-1220001000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Jonathan KING (1791/92) 1 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) John P.
