Clancy, Tom

  • The Hunt for Red October, 1989. I saw the movie several years ago, and really enjoyed it. Recently I was looking for something to read, and I saw the book in the local bookstore. I had never read any Tom Clancy books before, but had always enjoyed the movies based on his works, so I bought it. I read the whole thing, but I did not like it. Perhaps it was the "Cold War" politics, or perhaps the style, but for whatever reason, I did not find it appealing, nor gripping in anyway. This was my first "political thriller", and probably my last. Just not my cup of tea! I may try another of his books later on just to be sure.

Crichton, Michael

  • Airframe I didn't think I'd like this one, a thriller about an airplane crash and investigation. However I did find it enjoyable, much to my surprise.
  • The Andromeda Strain, 1969. I've had this book for at least 20 years and never read it. I had seen the movie before and thought it was okay, so I finally read the book and found it "okay" as well. Having been written in 1969 some of the technology was dated, but it was still interesting.
  • Congo, 1980. I saw the movie first, then read the book, and enjoyed both greatly.
  • Eaters of the Dead, 1976. This book was made into a movie called "The Thirteenth Warrior", staring Antonio Banderas. I read this book before I saw the movie (with me and Crichton, it is usually the other way around). I enjoyed this book, but found some parts of it hard to read, due to the style it was written in, but overall, I enjoyed it a great deal. I read it knowing that a movie had already been made from it, so after I finished the book, I waited for the movie to make it to video, and when it did, I rented it and watched it. I enjoyed the movie a lot, even though I seemed to be the only one (critics didn't like it, apparently). Having read the book first made it more enjoyable, I think. I have read many Michael Crichton books, and have enjoyed them all, excepting, perhaps The Terminal Man, which I read way back in High School as assigned reading.
  • Jurassic Park, 1990. Loved the movie and the book was even better. If you've only seen the movie, you should read the book also, as some things were quite different in the book.
  • The Lost World, 1995. A sequel to Jurassic Park. Book was great, movie was so-so, not nearly as good as the first, or third movie, but still entertaining.
  • Prey, 2002. Book was great. If it ever gets made into a movie it should be a good one (though many of his books don't translate well into movies for some reason, though they should be fantastic).
  • Sphere, 1987. I liked the book a lot. The movie was good, but should have been much better.
  • The Terminal Man, 1972. I had to read this in High School for a book report and didn't like it then. However, I read it again recently and found it more enjoyable. I also found that I didn't remember ANYTHING from reading it the first time. Perhaps I never finished it originally and just faked the report!
  • Timeline, 2000.  I've read most of Mr. Crichton's books and loved them all. This was no exception. They made it into a movie. I was looking forward to it, until I actually watched it. It wasn't very good for some reason.
