Book Reviews - Fiction - Edgar Rice Burroughs

Home > Personal > Book Reviews > Fiction -> B -> Edgar Rice Burroughs

NOTE the links to these books all go to Amazon.com. Many of ERB's books are available in multiple formats and editions, though many are now out of print, but used copies are often available.

Various Books (non series or short series)

  • Beyond the Farthest Star
  • The Cave Girl, 1913. The story of a wimpy Bostonian named Waldo, who is washed ashore on an uncharted primitive island, where he rapidly grows into a "he-man" and hero.
  • The Eternal Savage, 1913.  A story that actually includes Tarzan but only in a peripheral way. A brother and sister (Barney and Victoria Custer from "The Mad King") go to Tarzan's estate for some hunting and wind up waking a long frozen caveman. Interesting book.
  • I Am a Barbarian
  • The Lad and the Lion, 1914.  An interesting story about a boy (who is a prince in a Germanic kingdom) who has amnesia and starts his life over in Africa. Somewhat similar to the Tarzan story, but two stories are really taking place, one about the "Lad" and another about the goings on in the old kingdom. Interesting book.
  • The Land of Hidden Men (Original Title: Jungle Girl)
  • The Lost Continent, 1916.
  • The Mad King, 1913.  A story taking place in the fictional kingdom of Lutha (part of Germany) on the eve of World War I. An American has adventures after adventure in a medieval meets modern setting. An excellent book, though somewhat different from Burroughs normal style, but thoroughly enjoyable. Finished reading it on 4-17-2002.
  • The Man Eater, 1915.
  • The Monster Men, 1913. A mad scientist attempts to create the perfect human (a la Frankenstein) on a south pacific island.

  • The Moon Maid, 1926.

  • The Moon Men.

  • The Outlaw of Torn, 1911. An adventure novel taking place in 13th century England concerning intrigue and swordplay among the English royalty and aristocracy. I've read this book before, probably 20 years ago, but enjoyed reading it a second time.

Caspak Series (The Land that Time Forgot)

Mars (Barsoom) Series. The adventures of John Carter of Mars. Edgar Rice Burroughs is more famous for his other creation "Tarzan of the Apes," but this series is just as good, if not better in some ways. I have read the 11 books in this series over and over since my childhood, and recently I decided to read them all again. Most of these titles are out of print, but several can still be purchased from Amazon.com. My paperback editions (a complete set from the 70's, and a few from the 50's and 60's) are in feeble condition, so I'd love to get a new hardbound set if one is ever published. Note: The first three are a trilogy and they are the best of the series though the rest are pretty good too.

  1. A Princess of Mars,1912.
  2. Gods of Mars, 1912.
  3. Warlord of Mars, 1913, 1914.
  4. Thuvia, Maid of Mars, 1916.
  5. The Chessmen of Mars, 1922.
  6. Master Mind of Mars, 1925.
  7. Fighting Man of Mars, 1930.
  8. Swords of Mars, 1934, 1935.
  9. Synthetic Men of Mars, 1938, 1939.
  10. Llana of Gathol, 1941.
  11. John Carter of Mars, 1942, 1964.

Pellucidar (Inner Earth) Series. Adventures inside the earth! The first novel was made into a movie.

  1. At the Earth's Core, 1913.
  2. Pellucidar, 1914.
  3. Tanar of Pellucidar, 1930.
  4. Tarzan at the Earth's Core, 1930. Crossover!
  5. Back To The Stone Age, 1937.
  6. Land Of Terror, 1944.
  7. Savage Pellucidar, 1963.

Tarzan Series. Tarzan is one of the most famous of all fictional characters (up there with Sherlock Holmes). If all you know of Tarzan is based on the old movies and TV shows, then you don't know the "real" Tarzan. Unfortunately most of the Tarzan movies (with two possible exceptions) portray Tarzan in a very bad way, and not at all comparable with the books. There was a children's cartoon (either in the late 70's or early 80's) that actually did a really good job of being faithful to the novels, but most of the movies didn't come close. (Though many of them were entertaining on their own merits). This is a large series, and most of the books are excellent. The ones that aren't, are at least very good!

  1. Tarzan of the Apes, 1911.
  2. The Return of Tarzan, 1912.
  3. The Beasts of Tarzan, 1914.
  4. The Son of Tarzan, 1914.
  5. Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar, 1916.
  6. Jungle Tales of Tarzan, 1919.
  7. Tarzan the Untamed, 1920.
  8. Tarzan the Terrible, 1921.
  9. Tarzan and the Golden Lion, 1923.
  10. Tarzan and the Ant Men, 1924.
  11. Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, 1928.
  12. Tarzan and the Lost Empire, 1929.
  13. Tarzan at the Earth's Core, 1930. Crossover with the Pellucidar series (see above).
  14. Tarzan the Invincible, 1931.
  15. Tarzan Triumphant, 1932.
  16. Tarzan and the City of Gold, 1933.
  17. Tarzan and the Lion Man, 1934.
  18. Tarzan and the Leopard Men, 1935.
  19. Tarzan's Quest, 1936.
  20. Tarzan and the Forbidden City, 1938.
  21. Tarzan the Magnificent, 1939.
  22. Tarzan and the Foreign Legion, 1947.
  23. Tarzan and the Madman.
  24. Tarzan and the Castaways.
