Formation and Divisions

Yancey County was created in 1833 from Buncombe and Burke Counties.

Watauga County was formed from part of Yancey in 1849.

Madison County was formed from part of Yancey in 1851.

Mitchell County was formed from part of Yancey in 1861.

Status of Records

Yancey County has not suffered any major record losses, as far as I know. I do know that the marriage records from ca 1833 to 1850 have been lost.

I have been to Yancey County only once, but did not go to the Court House or Library.
