Formation and Divisions

Ashe County was created in 1799 from the north western part of Wilkes County.

Watauga County was formed from part of Ashe in 1849.

Alleghany County was formed from part of Ashe in 1859.

Status of Records

As far as I know, Ashe County has suffered no major record losses. I have visited Ashe County only once, but I did not go to the Court House (it was a Sunday). I have viewed some records at the NC archives on microfilm.
